Unusual bot fly larva removed from the scalp of a returning traveler.

An aberrant bot fly specimen was removed from the scalp of a patient 3 wk after returning from Belize. The specimen showed little resemblance to the typical human bot fly larva, Dermatobia hominis, prompting a molecular identification using cytochrome oxidase I and II (COI and COII, respectively) mitochondrial DNA sequence regions. A BLAST search was subsequently performed, and both our COI and COII amplicon sequences showed 99-100% match with Dermatobia hominis, despite the specimen's clearly aberrant morphology. These findings suggest there is much wider variation in Dermatobia larval morpho

Serodiagnosis of Przhevalskiana spp. Infestation in Goats Using a Competitive ELISA.

Goat warble-fly infestation is one of the parasitic diseases caused by the larvae of przhevalskiana spp. It is known to be a major challenge … mmunodiagnostic procedures as easy and cost-effective diagnostic methods provide early detection of myiasis in living animals (even when the larvae are still migrating or are undetectable in the animal body). This study was conducted to evaluate the competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) system in order to detect the antibodies of przhevalsk …

Dermatobia hominis in a dog imported from Brazil to Romania.

BACKGROUND: Dermatobia hominis (Diptera: Oestridae: Cuterebrinae) is a parasite with an important zoonotic and economical impact in the cattle industry, distributed in Central and South America, inhabiting wooded areas along rivers and lowlands. It infests mammals including humans. Lately, there has been a growing trend for people to travel on holidays with their pet dog and also international trade of dogs has increased significantly in the last two decades. Hence, the risk of importation of exotic parasites, including agents of myiasis has increased. Dermatobia hominis has been commonly repo…

Internal morphological changes during metamorphosis in the sheep nasal bot fly, Oestrus ovis.

During the larval stage, oestrid flies (Diptera: Oestridae) are obligate parasites, whereas during the adult stage they are free-living and do not feed. Like other cyclorrhaphous flies, oestrids undergo metamorphosis inside an opaque puparium, formed by the contracted and hardened cuticle of the third-instar larva. The present study documents the internal morphological changes taking place during metamorphosis of the sheep nasal bot fly, Oestrus ovis L., using non-invasive, micro-CT-based virtual histology and provides quantitative data of volumetric changes in specific organs. Virtual histolo

The impact of botfly parasitism on the health of the gracile mouse opossum (Gracilinanus agilis).

Fragmented habitats generally harbour small populations that are potentially more prone to local extinctions caused by biotic factors such as parasites. We evaluated the effects of botflies (Cuterebra apicalis) on naturally fragmented populations of the gracile mouse opossum (Gracilinanus agilis). We examined how sex, food supplementation experiment, season and daily climatic variables affected body condition and haemoglobin concentration in animals that were parasitized or not by botflies. Although parasitism did not affect body condition, haemoglobin concentrations were lower in parasitized

First record and analysis of the COI gene of Cobboldia elephantis obtained from a captive Asian elephant from Myanmar.

The stomach bot fly species in Asian elephants has long been known as Cobboldia elephantis. However, there is no genetic information available for this species to date. Here, we report that a third-instar fly larva was excreted from a captive Asian elephant four months after export from an elephant camp in Myanmar to a zoological garden in Japan. Morphological characteristics of the larva were coincident with published descriptions of C. elephantis. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene was amplified from the larva by PCR using primers modified from those designed for DNA

Dermatobia hominis: Potencial risk of resistance to macrocyclic lactones.

Dermatobia hominis is an ectoparasite that infests various species of mammals, including cattle, impairing the quality of cowhides and leather. After observing natural infestation with D. hominis larvae in cattle on two farms in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, we evaluated the efficacy of two macrocyclic lactones, ivermectin and moxidectin, against this parasite. The drugs were administered to 10 animals in each group, following the manufacturer's instructions. The groups were: Group 1-treated with ivermectin (0.2mg/kg of body weight (BW)); Group 2-treated with moxidectin (0.2mg/kg BW); and Gr

Wound debridement: lessons learned of when and how to remove "wild" maggots.

BACKGROUND: Wounds, particularly chronic wounds, are a common presentation to the Emergency Department (ED), and in severe cases can contain maggots. Maggot debridement therapy is a popular technique for wound debridement, but is limited to the use of sterilized larvae due to concerns of contamination and invasion of "wild" maggots into healthy tissue. Wild maggots in chronic wounds, therefore, should be removed, yet there is no reported literature that describes a technique for their removal. OBJECTIVE: This article presents a step-by-step approach for the safe removal of "wild" larvae in a

Evaluation of dicyclanil (CLiKZiN®) treatment for the early-season protection of ewes against blowfly strike.

Protecting sheep against early season myiasis (strike) is a significant problem in northern temperate farming systems, where fully-fleeced ewes and early-season lambs approaching market weight, are at high initial risk. Here, the prevention of early-season blowfly strike in ewes was examined on matched commercial sheep farms in south west England, using a new formulation of dicyclanil (CLiKZiN(®) pour on) with a short withdrawal period of 7 days. The ewes on seven farms received a prophylactic treatment with dicyclanil (CLiKZiN 1.25% pour-on suspension) in April 2011; ewes on three control far…

Parasitic infestations requiring surgical interventions.

Parasitic infestation is common in developing countries especially in Africa. Children are often more vulnerable to these infections. Many health problems result from these infestations, including malnutrition, iron-deficiency anemia, surgical morbidities, and even impaired cognitive function and educational achievement. Surgical intervention may be needed to treat serious complications caused by some of these parasites. Amoebic colitis and liver abscess caused by protozoan infections; intestinal obstruction, biliary infestation with cholangitis and liver abscess, and pancreatitis caused by As

[Parasites observed in a zebra in Izmir].

This work consists of a case report on a zebra presented to our institute for the determination of the cause of death. The animal was subjected to necropsy before it was presented to our institute. During examination, ascarids in the intestines and myasis agents in the stomach were observed. The parasites seen in the stomach and the intestines were identified according to the identification key and afterwards counted. In this work, the ascarids were identified as Parascaris equorum, myasis agents in the stomach were determined to be the third stage larvae of Gasterophilus intestinalis. In the

Nasal bots...a fascinating world!

Larvae causing obligatory myiasis are numerous and they may affect cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues, wounds, nasopharyngeal cavities (nasal bots), internal organs and the digestive tract (bots) of domestic and wild animals and humans as well. Nasal bots belong to the Family Oestridae, Subfamily Oestrinae, which includes several important genera: Oestrus, Kirkioestrus, and Gedoelstia infecting Artiodactyla (except Cervidae) in Africa and Eurasia, Cephenemyia and Pharyngomyia infecting Cervidae, Rhinoestrus infecting horses, Cephalopina infecting camels, Pharyngobolus infecting African elephan…

Parasite intensity and fur coloration in reindeer calves - contrasting artificial and natural selection.

1. In reindeer, the variation in fur coloration is higher in semi-domesticated than in wild populations. This difference might result from impacts of natural enemies acting on conspicuously coloured individuals with higher intensity in natural than semi-domesticated populations. 2. While predator pressure is rather similar for wild and semi-domesticated populations, semi-domesticated reindeer are less impacted by parasitism due to endectocidic treatment. In this study, we estimated the intensity of warble flies in different reindeer colour morphs in a large sample of untreated calves from mult

Lousicidal, ovicidal and repellent efficacy of some essential oils against lice and flies infesting water buffaloes in Egypt.

The lousicidal and repellent effects of five essential oils were investigated for the first time against the buffalo louse, Haematopinus tuberculatus, and flies infesting water buffaloes in Qalyubia Governorate, Egypt. For the in vitro studies, filter paper contact bioassays were used to test the oils and their lethal activities were compared with that of d-phenothrin. Four minutes post-treatment, the median lethal concentration, LC50, values were 2.74, 7.28, 12.35, 18.67 and 22.79% for camphor (Cinnamomum camphora), onion (Allium cepa), peppermint (Mentha piperita), chamomile (Matricaria cham
