Effects of non-opioid antitussives on epileptiform activity and NMDA responses in hippocampal and olfactory cortex slices.

Three commonly used antitussive compounds were tested for their ability to block epileptiform activity recorded extracellularly from hippocampal and olfactory cortex slices maintained in vitro. Antitussives were bath-applied to brain slices either before or after epileptiform activity was induced. Dextromethorphan (DM) prevented electrically evoked epileptiform afterdischarges and arrested spontaneous bursting induced by exposure to added NMDA or to Mg2(+)-free medium. In contrast, caramiphen (CM) and carbetapentane (CB) were effective against epileptiform activity induced by Mg2(+)-free mediu

Evidence that olfactory bulbectomy does not influence testicular regression in golden hamsters on short photoperiod by altering pineal melatonin production.

A recent study has shown that olfactory bulbectomy (BX) will prevent reproductive regression associated with short photoperiod in male golden hamsters. The results of experiments reported in this paper show that bulbectomized hamsters on long or short photoperiod still show a large nocturnal elevation in pineal melatonin production and that BX inhibits the reproductive regression induced by exogenous melatonin in pinealectomized hamsters. The data therefore indicate that BX does not inhibit short photoperiod induced testicular regression by altering melatonin secretion.

[Psychopathology and neuro-ophthalmology in meningioma of the olfactory groove].

In 14 patients with a surgically nad histopathologically verified meningioma of the olfactory nerve groove (OGM) (12 women, 2 men), clinical findings and diagnosis were analysed, especially with respect to neuropathology and psychopathology. The apodictic theorem that an OGM leads to a Foster-Kennedy syndrome as well as to a psychopathological orbital brain syndrome cannot be maintained. The Foster-Kennedy syndrome does not occur in a characteristically high incidence, and psychopathologically an orbital brain syndrome can only be diagnosed in case of an anterior location of the OGM. The more

Clinical assessment and molecular analysis of GnRHR and KAL1 genes in males with idiopathic hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism.

OBJECTIVE: The pathogenesis of idiopathic hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism (IHH) is mostly unclear. We characterized the clinical findings and … al synkinesia. Twenty-two out of 26 patients with IHH (85%) were classified as KS. Abnormalities of olfactory bulbs/sulci were observed in 79% of KS patients. One-third of KS patients had renal defects and 45.5% had a positive family history. GnRHR gene sequence analysis showed no mutations. KAL1 sequence analysis identified two novel missense mutations: c.1061A …

Expression of neuregulin and ErbB3 and ErbB4 after a traumatic lesion in the ventral funiculus of the spinal cord and in the intact primary olfactory system.

Neuron-derived neuregulins have been implicated in the regulation of glial cell function and survival. This factor family and its receptors … cords from normal adult and embryonic rats were used as controls. For comparison, sections from the olfactory bulb of perinatal and adult rats were also included in the study. Expression of NRG1 mRNA was observed in motoneurons in the intact spinal cord. A decrease in the labeling for NRG1 mRNA was seen during the first 5 days after VFL but then became slightly …

MRI-DTI contributes to evaluating diffuse neural injury following repetitive mild traumatic brain injury.

Repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) is an important risk factor for neurodegeneration, with early blood-brain barrier (BBB) disru … S) and voxel-based analysis (VBA) analysis revealed diffuse white matter injury in regions like the olfactory bulb and hypothalamus, while 18F-FDG PET-CT detected hypometabolism in the thalamus and striatum. These findings position BBB disruption as an early event potentially driving diffuse neural injury, and the combination of TBSS and VBA for MRI-DTI analysis …

Mutation of CHD7 impairs the output of neuroepithelium transition that is reversed by the inhibition of EZH2.

Haploinsufficiency of CHD7 (Chromo-Helicase-DNA binding protein 7) causes a severe congenital disease CHARGE syndrome. Brain anomaly such as microcephaly and olfactory bulb agenesis seen in CHARGE patients have not been mimicked in previous animal models. Here, we uncover an indispensable function of CHD7 in the neuroepithelium (NE) but not in the neural stem cells (NSCs) after NE transition. Loss of Chd7 in mouse NE resulted in CHARGE-like brain anomalies due to reduced proliferation and differentiation of neural stem and progenitor cells, which were recapitulated in CHD7 KO human forebrain o…

Integrating spatial transcriptomics data across different conditions, technologies and developmental stages.

With the rapid generation of spatial transcriptomics (ST) data, integrative analysis of multiple ST datasets from different conditions, technologies and developmental stages is becoming increasingly important. Here we present a graph attention neural network called STAligner for integrating and aligning ST datasets, enabling spatially aware data integration, simultaneous spatial domain identification and downstream comparative analysis. We apply STAligner to ST datasets of the human cortex slices from different samples, the mouse olfactory bulb slices generated by two profiling technologies, t…

Neuronal Degeneration in Mice Induced by an Epidemic Strain of Saint Louis Encephalitis Virus Isolated in Argentina.

Saint Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is a neglected flavivirus that causes severe neurological disorders. The epidemic strain of SLEV, CbaA … striatum and cerebellum were the most affected structures. Neurodegeneration was also found in the olfactory bulb, thalamus, hypothalamus, hippocampus, and hindbrain. SLEV infection triggered brain cell apoptosis as well as somatodendritic and terminal degeneration. In addition, we observed massive excitotoxic-like degeneration in many cortical structures. Apop …

TCDD induces UbcH7 expression and synphilin-1 protein degradation in the mouse ventral midbrain.

UbcH7 is an ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme that interacts with parkin, an E3 ligase. The UbcH7-parkin complex promotes the ubiquitination and … bch7 gene promoter as well as its transactivation, resulting in an induction of UbcH7 levels in the olfactory bulb, ventral midbrain, hippocampus, striatum, cerebral cortex, brain stem, and medulla oblongata. In parallel, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin promoted synphilin-1 degradation in an aryl hydrocarbon receptor-dependent way.

Genetics of isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism: role of GnRH receptor and other genes.

Hypothalamic gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) is a key player in normal puberty and sexual development and function. Genetic causes of isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) have been identified during the recent years affecting the synthesis, secretion, or action of GnRH. Developmental defects of GnRH neurons and the olfactory bulb are associated with hyposmia, rarely associated with the clinical phenotypes of synkinesia, cleft palate, ear anomalies, or choanal atresia, and may be due to mutations of KAL1, FGFR1/FGF8, PROKR2/PROK2, or CHD7. Impaired GnRH secretion in normosmic pati…

Investigation of pseudorabies virus latency in nervous tissues of seropositive pigs exposed to field strain.

The prevalence and quantity of latent pseudorabies virus (PrV) in nervous tissues of pigs exposed to field strain in Korea was investigated by nested and real-time PCR. Nervous tissues including trigeminal ganglion (TG), olfactory bulb (OB), and brain stem (BS) were collected from 94 seropositive pigs. PrV latent infection in nervous tissues was initially investigated by nested PCR targeting three glycoprotein genes (gB, gE, and gG). Based on the obtained result, latent infection was detected in 95.7% of screened animals. Furthermore, it was revealed that the examined tissues harbored differen…
