Pseudoporphyria, a cutaneous disorder characterized by skin fragility, vesiculation, and scarring, has been reported as a side effect of naproxen therapy in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). We report the results of a 6-month prospective study to determine the prevalence of pseudoporphyria in our JRA population. In this study, we revealed a peculiar morphological feature of 50B11 nociceptive sensory neurons in in vitro culture related to the forskolin-induced differentiation of these cells growing upside-down on cover glass supports. Multi-photon non-linear microscopy was applied to monitor increased neurite arborization and elongation. Under live and unstained conditions, second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy could monitor microtubule organization inside the cells while also correlating with the detection of cellular multi-photon autofluorescence, probably derived from mitochondria metabolites.

Hemolysis occurring in hematologic diseases is often associated with an iron loading anemia. This iron overload is the result of a massive outflow of hemoglobin into the bloodstream, but the mechanism of hemoglobin handling has not been fully elucidated. BACKGROUND: Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) is a cutaneous porphyria caused by mutations in the ferrochelatase (FECH) or, less frequently, the delta-aminolaevulinate synthase 2 (ALAS2) gene. These studies try to elucidate why isocoproporphyrin appears in hexachlorobenzene-poisoned rats' feces. Chronic exposure of hexachlorobenzene to rats produces an experimental model for human porphyria cutanea tarda. After 8 weeks of treatment, rats showed high porphyrin excreta and 50% inhibition of liver uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase activity. Uroporphyrin plus heptacarboxylic porphyrin exceeded coproporphyrin in urine, whereas in feces, isocoproporphyrin, from abnormal pentacarboxylic porphyrinogen III oxidative decarboxylation by liver coproporphyrinogen oxidase, became the main porphyrin.
