Preschool parent-pediatrician consultations and predictive referral patterns for problematic behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined parents' reports of the frequency, nature, and outcome of pediatrician consultation and interventions about significant preschool behavior problems. METHOD: Parents were asked whether they consulted with their pediatric providers about disruptive behavioral problems during a longitudinal study of preschool children. RESULTS: Eighty 4-year-old children had parents who had consulted with their pediatricians versus 90 children whose parents did not. Children who eventually met criteria for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or oppositional defi

Consensus and learning climate in temporary versus permanent teams in team-based learning.

BACKGROUND: In team-based learning, students are typically placed in fixed teams based on the idea that stable group membership fosters collaboration: as teammates get to know each other, they share more information, resolve differences and feel motivated to contribute. This rationale had not been tested in a randomized controlled trial. OBJECTIVE: The study compares team-based learning in temporary teams with the default permanent teams regarding individual and team readiness assurance test performance (iRAT, tRAT), reaching team consensus, the learning climate, and intrinsic motivation. Hallucinations and disturbed behaviour in the critically ill: incidence, patient characteristics, associations, trajectory, and outcomes.

PURPOSE: To use natural language processing (NLP) to study the incidence, characteristics, trajectory, associations, and outcomes of hallucinations and disturbed behaviour in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. METHODS: We used NLP to scan clinical progress notes of a large cohort of ICU patients to detect words indicating that a patient had experienced hallucinations. We also used NLP to detected disturbed behaviour during ICU stay. Moreover, we studied the use of antipsychotic medications in a nested cohort. Finally, we obtained the demographics, trajectory, associations, and outcome of the

Brief intensive EMDR therapy for PTSD in adults with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning and behavioural problems: a multiple baseline design study.

Background: Individuals with mild intellectual disability (MID; IQ 50-70) or borderline intellectual functioning (BIF; IQ 70-85) are at an elevated risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with PTSD symptoms possibly associated with behavioural problems. It is important to test the effectiveness of trauma-focused treatments, such as eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, for adults with MID-BIF, PTSD, and severe behavioural problems. Objective: To determine the safety and effectiveness of brief intensive EMDR therapy carried out by a team of rotating therapists in a

Online Parent Training for The Initial Management of ADHD referrals (OPTIMA): the protocol for a randomised controlled trial of a digital parenting intervention implemented to support parents and children on a treatment waitlist.

BACKGROUND: Children referred for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often present with a broader pattern of conduct problems including oppositionality and defiance. This combination can be extremely stressful to parents, lower parents' self-esteem and negatively impact family life. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends that families receive support as soon as possible after their referral. However, as clinical services are overstretched, and traditional in-person parenting intervention programmes are expensive, families often must wait times a lo

Sex differences in medial prefrontal and parietal cortex structure in children with disruptive behavior.

Sex differences in brain structure in children with disruptive behavior disorders (DBD) remain poorly understood. This study examined sex differences in gray matter volume in children with DBD in a priori regions-of-interest implicated in the pathophysiology of disruptive behavior. We then conducted a whole-brain analysis of cortical thickness to examine sex differences in regions not included in our hypothesis. Exploratory analyses investigated unique associations between structure, and dimensional measures of severity of disruptive behavior and callous-unemotional traits. This cross-sectiona

D-Cycloserine augmentation of cognitive behavior therapy for pediatric OCD: Predictors and moderators of outcome.

BACKGROUND: Over half of children receiving cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) do not fully remit. To improve response rates and enhance extinction learning, d-cycloserine (DCS) has been examined as an augmenting agent of CBT. To direct children with OCD towards treatments with the highest likelihood of success, the current study evaluated the conditions under which DCS augmentation works best (i.e., moderators) and the baseline characteristics associated with outcome, irrespective of treatment type (i.e., predictors). METHODS: Data came from a two-site

Academic procrastination and feelings toward procrastination in LD and non-LD students: Preliminary insights for future intervention.

Academic procrastination is a prevalent behavior that negatively influences students' performance and well-being. The growing number of students with learning disabilities (LD) in higher education communities leads to the need to study and address academic procrastination in this unique population of students and to develop ways to prevent and intervene. The present study examined the difference in academic procrastination between LD, non-LD, and supported LD college students in Israel. Findings indicated a significant difference between the three groups, both in academic procrastination and i

Treatment outcomes from forensic intellectual disability services: The perspectives of patients and their family/carers.

INTRODUCTION: Research investigating the treatment outcomes of forensic intellectual and developmental disability (FIDD) services has largely focused on the perspectives of clinicians and researchers. This study sought the perspectives of patients and family/carers on the outcomes important to them. METHODS: Semi-structured consultation groups were conducted with patients in FIDD services (n = 21) and family carers (n = 6). Interview data were content analysed, and outcomes identified fell into three main domains (effectiveness, safety and patient experience). RESULTS: The consultations iden

Movement cognition and narration of the emotions treatment versus standard speech therapy in the treatment of children with borderline intellectual functioning: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) is defined as a "health meta-condition… characterized by various cognitive dysfunctions associated with an intellectual quotient (IQ) between 71 and 85 which determines a deficit in the individual's functioning both in the restriction of activities and in the limitation of social participation". It can be caused by many factors, including a disadvantaged background and prematurity. BIF affects 7-12% of primary school children that show academic difficulties due to poor executive functioning. In many children with BIF, language, movement and

A randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of a rumination-focused group treatment for residual depression.

The maintenance of residual symptoms following acute treatment is common and is associated with poor long-term prognosis. This study investigates whether a cognitive-behavioral group treatment is effective in reducing residual depression by targeting depressive rumination. Participants (N=60) were randomly assigned to either the group treatment or a wait-list control condition. Treatment significantly improved depressed mood, rumination, perceived control over rumination and dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs compared with the wait condition. Treatment gains were maintained over the follow-up

Feature versus spatial strategies by orangutans (Pongo abelii) and human children (Homo sapiens) in a cross-dimensional task.

Despite the fact that photographic stimuli are used across experimental contexts with both human and nonhuman subjects, the nature of individuals' perceptions of these stimuli is still not well understood. In the present experiments, we tested whether three orangutans and 36 human children could use photographic information presented on a computer screen to solve a perceptually corresponding problem in the physical domain. Furthermore, we tested the cues that aided in this process by pitting featural information against spatial position in a series of probe trials. We found that many of the ch

HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Sub-Saharan Africa is the region most severely affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Of the 40 million HIV infected individuals at the end of 2003, 26 million (65%) were living in the area. Reasons for the high infection rate include historical, political, economic, and cultural factors. The diversity of populations, combined with destitution, political and economic instability and hunger, has led to a number of strategies for combating the disease in Sub-Saharan Africa. These include voluntary counseling and testing, community involvement, facilitating behavior modifications, which include consi

Performance variability as a new theoretical mechanism regarding eating disorders and cognitive processing.

Bulimic (n = 23) and control subjects (n = 28) were compared on four neuropsychological tests and several clinical variables. Between-group differences were observed on neuropsychological measures that reflected marked impulsivity and problem-solving deficits in the bulimics. Additional between-group comparisons, based on the variability of performance on the neuropsychological tests, revealed that bulimics were more variable than controls on approximately 50% of the tests given Performance variability on the remaining two tests was equal across the bulimic and control groups. This represents

The effects of Parkinson's disease on the capacity to generate information randomly.

In two experiments, the capacity of Parkinson patients and normal controls to generate letters randomly was investigated using a dual task. The task was based on Baddeley's work (Baddeley, A. D., Quarterly Journal of experimental Psychology 18, 119-129, 1966) where participants vocalize letters of the alphabet in random order. The task was performed under two conditions where letters were (a) vocalized at a specified rate (0.5, 1, 2 and 4 sec); and (B) letters were vocalized at the same rates but with a secondary task of sorting cards into one, two, four and eight categories. The aim was to te

Social information-processing patterns partially mediate the effect of early physical abuse on later conduct problems.

The authors tested the hypothesis that early physical abuse is associated with later externalizing behavior outcomes and that this relation is mediated by the intervening development of biased social information-processing patterns. They assessed 584 randomly selected boys and girls from European American and African American backgrounds for the lifetime experience of physical abuse through clinical interviews with mothers prior to the child's matriculation in kindergarten. Early abuse increased the risk of teacher-rated externalizing outcomes in Grades 3 and 4 by fourfold, and this effect cou

Modeling effects on suicidal behavior.

Knowledge of suicidal behavior, i.e., psychiatric patients indicating that they have an acquaintance or relative who has attempted or committed suicide, has been cited as a risk factor in the assessment of suicide potential. The authors evaluated psychiatric patients hospitalized for a suicide attempt (N = 30), serious suicidal ideation (N = 26), or other non-suicide-related reasons (N = 20) and also a control group of 18 patients admitted for orthopaedic surgery. Information derived from a structured clinical interview revealed that suicide attempters have fewer suicidal models than individua
