Existing lower limb exoskeletons (LLEs) have demonstrated a lack of sufficient patient involvement during rehabilitation training. To address this issue and better incorporate the patient's motion intentions, this paper proposes an online brain-computer interface (BCI) system for LLE based motor imagery and stacked ensemble. The establishment of this online BCI system enables a comprehensive closed-loop control process, which includes the collection and decoding of brain signals, robotic control, and real-time feedback mechanisms. Additionally, an online experimental protocol that integrates v

BACKGROUND: Sensorimotor foot orthoses (SMFO) may be a helpful intervention to improve balance by enhancing proprioceptive input within the sensorimotor control loop. SMFO intervention could have beneficial effects on reducing risk of ankle sprains and falls.
METHODS: A total of 57 healthy adults (age: 48.5 ± 11.8 years) completed a static balance test (30 s) on a force plate, with open eyes (OE) and closed eyes (CE). Balance performance was assessed by using posturography to measure the sway area (mm2), under SMFO and no foot orthoses (NFO) conditions.
RESULTS: Descriptive statistics show a

Degenerative cervical myelopathy is a frequently encountered age-related pathology following compression of the spinal cord. This case report delineates the clinical manifestation of cervical and lumbar myelopathy in a 78-year-old male patient, characterised by chief complaints of difficulty in moving bilateral upper and lower extremities and difficulty in bed mobility. Motor impairment can manifest in three different presentations, which are paraparesis, hemiparesis, or quadriparesis. The motor relearning program incorporating functional electrical stimulation constitutes a rehabilitative app

A 10-year-old male Shar-Pei was referred for lethargy and proprioceptive deficits of the left thoracic limb. An magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination of the cervical spinal column and the brain was performed. The MRI examination of the brain was normal. A left-sided C3-C4 intervertebral disc extrusion with spinal cord compression was diagnosed. Medical treatment was elected. Within a week after the MRI examination, the dog presented with deep partial-thickness skin burn wounds in both axillae. Since the specific absorption rate had not exceeded the safety limits during any of the scans

A 3-year-old castrated male, American Pit Bull Terrier presented to Texas A&M University due to a 3-week mixed cerebellar and general proprioceptive ataxia, circling, head tilt, and dull mentation. Neurologic examination revealed signs of vestibular and mesencephalic dysfunction. Postmortem examination revealed a 1.1 × 1 × 0.8-cm, soft, dark red, well-circumscribed, left-sided mass, extending from the crus cerebri of the midbrain caudally to the pons. Microscopically, the neoplasm was composed of a spindle-shaped interstitial population of cells interspersed between a prominent capillary netwo

The human motor system has evolved to perform efficient motor control in Earth's gravity. Altered gravity environments, such as microgravity and hypergravity, pose unique challenges for performing fine motor tasks with object manipulation. Altered gravity has been shown to reduce the speed and accuracy of complex manual tasks. This study aims to leverage electromyography (EMG) and virtual reality (VR) technologies to provide insights into the neuromuscular mechanism of object weight compensation. Seven healthy subjects were recruited to perform arm and hand movements, including a customized Bo

The World Health Organization estimates the number of people suffering from depression to be over 264 million. Current monoamine transmission modulating therapeutics, even with proper adherence and acceptable tolerability, are not effective for nearly one third of the patients, leading clinicians to explore other therapeutic options such as electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, ketamine infusions, and, more recently, glabellar botulinum toxin, BoNT, injections. The scale and mechanism of antidepressant action of BoNT is unclear and maybe hypothetically attributed to the

BACKGROUND: Seasickness and travel sickness are classic types of motion illness. Modern simulation systems and virtual reality representations can also induce comparable symptoms. Such manifestations can be alleviated or prevented by various measures.
METHODS: This review is based on pertinent publications retrieved by a PubMed search, with special attention to clinical trials and review articles.
RESULTS: Individuals vary in their susceptibility to autonomic symptoms, ranging from fatigue to massive vomiting, induced by passive movement at relatively low frequencies (0.2 to 0.4 Hz) in situa

RATIONALE: Carotid sinus hypersensitivity (CSH) is traditionally classified into 3 subgroups: cardioinhibitory, vasodepressor, and mixed subtypes. However, the underlying mechanism of CSH in head and neck cancer is controversial. Several pathological mechanisms of CSH have been proposed: atherosclerotic noncompliance, sternocleidomastoid proprioceptive denervation, and generalized autonomic dysfunction.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We reported a 75-year-old man who had recurrent syncope attacks secondary to hypotension and reduced plasma norepinephrine (NE) levels. CSH was suspected when carotid massage

Reverse simulation models of facial expression recognition suggest that we recognize the emotions of others by running implicit motor programmes responsible for the production of that expression. Previous work has tested this theory by examining facial expression recognition in participants with Möbius sequence, a condition characterized by congenital bilateral facial paralysis. However, a mixed pattern of findings has emerged, and it has not yet been tested whether these individuals can imagine facial expressions, a process also hypothesized to be underpinned by proprioceptive feedback from t

Numerous challenges are faced in investigations aimed at developing a better understanding of the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The anatomy of the tongue and other upper-airway tissues, and the ability to model their behavior, are central to such investigations. We present details of the construction and development of a soft-tissue model of the human upper airway, with the ultimate goal of simulating obstructive sleep apnea. The steps taken to produce a representative anatomical geometry, of which the associated muscle histology is also captured, are documented. An overvie

The relationship between voice and posture has been previously investigated. The aim of this study was to evaluate postural alterations in subjects with dysfunctional dysphonia and to analyse their variations after rehabilitation. Forty subjects with hypokinetic dysfunctional dysphonia were submitted to posturographic analysis with alternatively open and closed eyes; subjects were invited to stand upright and breath normally so that the vestibular-spinal reflex could be assessed. The following variables were considered: pressure centre coordinates on frontal and sagittal planes and standard de

Memory for action is enhanced if individuals are allowed to perform the corresponding movements, compared to when they simply listen to them (enactment effect). Previous studies have shown that individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have difficulties with processes involving the self, such as autobiographical memories and self performed actions. The present study aimed at assessing memory for action in Asperger Syndrome (AS). We investigated whether adults with AS would benefit from the enactment effect when recalling a list of previously performed items vs. items that were only visu

Concerns about drug-resistant infectious organisms are increasing in rehabilitation facilities. Resulting isolation protocols can potentially challenge the patients' access to medical care, psychological adaptation, mobility, and environmental interaction and therefore hinder the rehabilitation process. We report a systematic, retrospective case review of an active-duty Army sergeant who sustained a C5 American Spinal Cord Injury Association Impairment Scale A spinal cord injury while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The patient's acute rehabilitation was complicated by an Acinetobacter cal

The G(M2) gangliosidoses are a group of lysosomal storage diseases caused by defects in the genes coding for the enzyme hexosaminidase or the G(M2) activator protein. Four Jacob sheep from the same farm were examined over a 3-year period for a progressive neurologic disease. Two lambs were 6-month-old intact males and 2 were 8-month-old females. Clinical findings included ataxia in all 4 limbs, proprioceptive deficits, and cortical blindness. At necropsy, the nervous system appeared grossly normal. Histologically, most neurons within the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral ganglia were enlarged

Movement of the body, head, or eyes with respect to the world creates one of the most common yet complex situations in which the visuomotor system must localize objects. In this situation, vestibular, proprioceptive, and extra-retinal information contribute to accurate visuomotor control. The utility of retinal motion information, on the other hand, is questionable, since a single pattern of retinal motion can be produced by any number of head or eye movements. Here we investigated whether retinal motion during a smooth pursuit eye movement contributes to visuomotor control. When subjects purs
