IN GENERAL: Infectious diseases represent the third cause of mortality in patients aged over 65. Age-related immune deficiency and underlying diseases frequently favour infections. The symptoms are often fickle and misleading, delay diagnosis and worsen the prognosis. THE PRINCIPLE INFECTIONS: Broncho-pulmonary and urinary infections predominate in this context. More rare but severe complications specifically related to age are also possible, notably meningitis, tuberculosis, herpes zoster and septicemia in the elderly.

Juvenile chronic arthritis is a heterogenous disease with an ill-defined pathogenesis. In our study, synovial fluid (SF) and peripheral blood (PB) of 70 children with oligoarthritis were investigated; bacteria-specific lymphocyte proliferation and antibodies to arthritogenic bacteria were determined. The aim was to evaluate the demographic data of dog-bite cases organized from criminal and forensic reports. This study evaluated 328 cases admitted to the Director of Forensic Medicine, Eskisehir, as a result of dog bites between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2010. It was found that those in the age-group of 0-18 were most frequently exposed to dog bites (48.5%). Polyribosilribitolphosphate (PRP), the capsular polysaccharide from Haemophilus influenzae type b, is a T-cell-independent type 2 antigen. In vitro culture of adult peripheral blood T cells with 15 micrograms/ml PRP leads to induction of interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R) expression on up to 10% of T cells.
