Instructor Development of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) Self-Efficacy within a PoP-CURE Professional Development Community of Practice.

This case study investigates changes in technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) self-efficacy in a group of instructors engaged in a Power of Place Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (PoP-CURE) Professional Development (PD) Community of Practice. We hypothesized that mentored and iterative PD would create a community of practice in which instructors become confident adopters of evidence-based technological PoP-CURE practices, promoting the overall development of instructor TPACK self-efficacy. Previous work on PD personas helped to inform our work by guiding observation

Alzheimer's disease neuropathology and longitudinal change in subjective cognitive complaints.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective cognitive complaints often precede declines in objective measures of cognitive performance. Associations of incipie … s and memory performance were assessed with the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire and the California Verbal Learning Test, respectively. RESULTS: Greater parahippocampal tau, independent of amyloid, was associated with higher subjective complaints (estimate = 0.25, standard error [SE] = 0.1, P = 0.015 ), while greater entorhinal tau corresponded to an attenua …

Effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation on measures of cognition and symptom scores in Chinese patients with schizophrenia.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) may have effects on cognition and symptoms in psychiatric illness but there have been fe … S rated positive or negative symptoms. There was a trend (P < 0.06) for the MATRICS Domain score of verbal learning to show greater improvement of active tACS compared to sham within 1-2 days after the 10 tACS sessions. Additional trials are needed to determine the effective tACS parameters targeting cognition and symptoms of schizophrenia.

Alterations of cognitive functions post traumatic upper limb injuries in adults: A longitudinal study.

Recent studies have demonstrated a possible association between cognitive impairments and traumatic upper limb injuries. This study aims to track the cognitive changes in individuals with such injuries. In this longitudinal study, 36 participants with traumatic upper limb injuries and 36 uninjured participants were enrolled. Cognitive functions were assessed using the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) and the Stroop Color and Word Test (SCWT) over a period of 6 months, with evaluations conducted on three occasions: 1 month (T1), 3 months (T2), and 6 months (T3). The results revealed th…

Trajectory assessments of cognitive, visuospatial, and academic profile in nonverbal learning disability (visuospatial developmental disorder).

Substantial progress has been made in defining children with nonverbal learning disability (NLD), but longitudinal studies are still lacking. To start filling this gap, we examined changes in general cognitive functioning, visuo-constructive skills, and academic profiles in a group of children with NLD, also taking into account any internalizing and externalizing symptom as transdiagnostic features. A total of 30 participants (24 boys) diagnosed with NLD were tested twice, with a three-year gap between the two assessments (T1: at age 8-13; T2: at 11-16), on their cognitive profile, visuospatia…

Effects of adapted Letter-Sound correspondence instruction with older learners with complex communication needs and autism spectrum disorder.

Individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) are often excluded from learning literacy skills that use phonological approaches due to challenges with verbal production of speech sounds. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of systematic literacy instruction with materials modified to teach letter-sound correspondences (LSC) to pre-adolescent and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) with minimal or no speech who use AAC. A single subject design across three letter-sound sets was used, with three individuals with ASD. A total of 12 LSC were t

Body Mass Index Predicts Decline in Executive Function in Bipolar Disorder: Preliminary Data of a 12-Month Follow-up Study.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity and associated risk factors have been linked to cognitive decline before. METHODS: Neurocognitive measures (California Verbal Learning Test, Trail Making Test [TMT] A/B, Digit-Symbol-Test, Digit-Span, d2 Test), anthropometrics (e.g., body mass index [BMI]), and clinical ratings (Hamilton Depression Scale, Young Mania Rating Scale) were collected over a 12-month ob…

Predicting responsiveness to a sustained reading and spelling intervention in children with dyslexia.

The present study aimed to predict responsiveness to a sustained two-phase reading and spelling intervention with a focus on declarative and procedural learning respectively in 122 second-grade Dutch children with dyslexia. We related their responsiveness to intervention to precursor measures (phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming ability, letter knowledge, and verbal working memory) and related word and pseudoword reading and spelling outcomes of the sustained intervention to initial reading and spelling abilities, and first-phase, initial treatment success. Results showed that chi

Diabetes mellitus Type II and cognitive capacity in healthy aging, mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease.

While diabetes mellitus (DM) Type II has repeatedly been linked to Alzheimer´s disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), longitudinal research is scarce and disease duration has not always been taken into account. In a birth cohort born between 1930 and 1932 we investigated the influence of DM Type II and disease duration on neuropsychological functioning (memory/learning, attention, verbal fluency, visuospatial thinking and abstract thinking) across 14 years. Subjects who developed MCI or AD performed significantly poorer on all neuropsychological tests applied. While significant main

The importance of sustained attention in early Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: There is conflicting evidence regarding impairment of sustained attention in early Alzheimer's disease (AD). We examine whether sustained attention is impaired and predicts deficits in other cognitive domains in early AD. METHODS: Fifty-one patients with early AD (MMSE > 18) and 15 healthy elderly controls were recruited. The sustained attention to response task (SART) was used to assess sustained attention. A subset of 25 patients also performed tasks assessing general cognitive function (ADAS-Cog), episodic memory (Logical memory scale, Paired Associates Learning), executive f
