Intralabyrinthine schwannomas (ILS) are a rare differential diagnosis of sudden hearing loss and vertigo. In an own case series of 12 patients, 6 tumors showed an intracochlear, 3 an intravestibular, 1 a transmodiolar including the cerebello-pontine angle (CPA), 1 a transotic including the CPA and 1 a multilocular location. The tumors were removed surgically in 9 patients, whereas 3 patients opted for a "wait-and-test-and-scan" strategy. Of the surgical patients, 3 underwent labyrinthectomy and cochlear implant (CI) surgery in a single stage procedure; 1 patient received extended cochleostomy

BACKGROUND: Acute ischemic stroke in the distribution of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) can cause the vestibular dysfunction in the roll plane of the vestibuloocular reflex with abnormal ocular torsion (OT). There has been no systemic study that carefully investigates the nature of OT that occurs with AICA infarction.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the frequency, the characteristic patterns of OT associated with AICA territory infarction, and the crucial site for determining the direction of OT in AICA territory infarction.
METHODS: We studied 12 consecutive cases of infarction i

This study aimed to assess if children with a vestibular impairment (VI) are more prone to have neurocognitive deficits compared to typically developing (TD) peers, taking into account important confounding factors with hearing loss being the most important. The neurocognitive performance of fifteen VI children (6-13 years old) was compared to that of an age-, handedness- and sex-weighted group of TD peers (n = 60). Secondly, their performance was also compared to matched groups of TD and hearing impaired (HI) children to evaluate the involvement of HI. The protocol comprises cognitive tests a

Thematically grouped symptom clusters are present during the acute timeline of post-mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI), representing clinical profiles called subtypes. Exercise intolerance has not been evaluated within the subtype classifications and, because guidelines support early submaximal aerobic exercise, further knowledge is required in regard to the exercise capabilities among the concussion subtypes. This cross-sectional study (n = 78) aimed to characterize the presence of exercise intolerance within the clinical subtypes and to explore performance on the Buffalo Concussion Treadmi

Chronic occupational exposure to carbon disulfide (CS2) has debilitating motor and sensory effects in humans, which can increase the risk of falls. Although no mention of vestibulotoxic effects is contained in the literature, epidemiological and experimental data suggest that CS2 could cause low-frequency hearing loss when associated with noise exposure. Low-frequency noise might also perturb the peripheral balance receptor through an as-yet unclear mechanism. Here, we studied how exposure to a low-frequency noise combined with 250-ppm CS2 affected balance in rats. Vestibular function was test

OBJECTIVE: The pathophysiologic concept of Ménière's disease assumes that endolymphatic hydrops is the cause of the symptoms via increased pressure in the endolymphatic space and/or ionic disorder due to ruptured membrane. The goal of this study was to assess whether the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) properties in patients with Ménière's disease were consistent with the classical theory.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 34 patients (19 women, 15 men) presenting with unilateral Ménière's disease divided into 2 groups according to the duration of the disease: 18 were in the early stage (< 12 mo

OBJECTIVE: To find the effective maneuver of a positional test.
METHODS: We performed three different maneuvers of a positional test in 86 vertiginous patients in supine-lying position in the following order: (1) "body-only maneuver": a patient turned only his body to one side while keeping his head still; (2) "head-only maneuver": a patient turned only his head to one side while keeping the body still; (3) "head-and-body maneuver": a patient turned his head and body together to one side. Eye movement during the whole procedure was recorded by two-dimensional electronystagmography.
RESULTS:

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is known to cause symptoms and signs of vestibulocochlear dysfunction, including sensorineural hearing loss. The present study investigates the audiological features of a group of 15 patients with this syndrome. A complete otolaryngological, neurologic, and audiological workup was performed in every patient, including auditory brain stem response measurements and recording of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions. In most patients, some degree of hearing loss was evident, and abnormal latencies and interpeak latencies of the auditory brain stem response, or even absence

The subjective visual horizontal (SVH) was measured by means of a small, rotatable, luminous line in darkness in the upright head and body position and at 10, 20 and 30 degrees of tilt to the right and left before, and repeatedly during a follow-up period of 1 year after intratympanic gentamicin instillations in 12 patients with recurrent vertigo attacks. This treatment caused a loss of the bithermal caloric responses on the diseased side. Shortly after treatment there was a significant tilt of SVH towards the treated side (group mean = 10.6 degrees). Repeated testing made it possible to chara

This article reports the results of a four-year follow-up study initiated in 1970 on the long-term effects of gentamicin and kanamycin use in newborn infants. Audiometric, vestibular, and psychometric evaluations were performed on gentamicin-treated, kanamycin-treated, and untreated, matched control infants and children. No substantial sensorineural hearing loss or vestibular dysfunction was identified in these patients that could be attributed to aminoglycoside therapy. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to investigate the functions of the vestibular, tactile, visual, and proprioceptive modalities in children with prelinguistic hearing loss. Specifically, the study sought to examine evidence for the compensation hypothesis (auditory deprivation leads to enhancements in functions of other sensory systems) versus the deficiency hypothesis (functions of the spared senses are compromised as a result of auditory deprivation).
METHODS: Twelve children between the ages of 5 years, 1 month and 8 years, 11 months with bilateral severe-profound hearing loss par

OBJECTIVES: High rates of coexisting vestibular deficits and psychiatric disorders have been reported in patients with vertigo. Hence, a causal linkage between the vestibular system and emotion processing systems has been postulated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of vestibular function and vestibular deficits as well as preexisting psychiatric pathologies on the course of vestibular vertigo syndromes over 1 year.
METHODS: This interdisciplinary prospective longitudinal study included a total of 68 patients with vestibular vertigo syndromes. Four subgroups were compared: ben

BACKGROUND: The Dix-Hallpike (DH) test is a gold standard for diagnosing benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). However, lateral semicircular canal BPPV is not rare. We have been performing the new roll test that begins from the sitting position and contains a head-hanging position, in order not to overlook lateral canal BPPV. We noticed that transient vertical/torsional nystagmus sometimes occurs during the new roll test.
OBJECTIVE: To clarify the value of the new roll test in diagnosing posterior canal BPPV and elucidate the position that elicits nystagmus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The

PURPOSE: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is diagnosed and divided into subtypes based on positioning vertigo and nystagmus. Whether these subtypes entail any significant differences in patient-reported symptoms; is yet not known. Such differences may have clinical and therapeutic consequences. Our aim was to assess dizziness handicap and clinical characteristics of posterior and lateral canal BPPV.
METHODS: This prospective observational multicentre study analysed consecutive patients with BPPV, confirmed by standardized procedures including videonystagmography under diagnostic ma
