Formula for estimating the optic force of intraocular lenses made from elastic materials has been tried in 106 patients. The formula takes account of forward deflection of the elastic intraocular lens in the posterior chamber of the eye. The proposed method for estimation more than threefold decreases the mean error in estimation of optic force of elastic intraocular lenses in comparison with calculations with the use of known formulas. Intrastromal injection of viscoelastic (2% methylcellulose or healon) will facilitate the separation of deep stroma during dissection of recipient stroma. Full thickness lamellar keratoplasty was performed on a smooth graft bed which approached Descemet's membrane. 21 cases with bullous keratopathy were treated and followed up for six months, post-operatively. PURPOSE: To examine the S-cone ERG in subjects with and without L and M-cone function.
METHODS: Ganzfeld spectral flashes in the presence of strong Ganzfeld adapting fields are used to elicit S-cone ERGs.
RESULTS: The S-cone ERG b-wave ranges from 0.2 to 4 mV in amplitude and 38-45 msec in implicit time. There is a progressive decrease in amplitude with age. The response is similar in subjects with or without L and M cone function.

After 8.5 years a rhesus monkey with bilateral hydrogel (Permalens) intracorneal implants was evaluated by light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to determine the long-term effects of a synthetic plastic upon the primate cornea. The corneal epithelium in eight patients was surveyed by biomicroscopy and specular microscopy before and after the intraepikeratophakia procedure. Autografting of the epithelium was also examined by electron microscopy. Cataract extraction with implantation of an anterior chamber lens was performed in 83 patients (118 eyes). In 3 patients occurred an intraoperative breaking up of the anterior limiting vitreous membrane. It had no influence on the early or late localization of the implanted lens. In the postoperative course one could observe the breaking up of the anterior limiting vitreous membrane in 1 case only; the vitreous pucker caused a delicate deflection of the implanted lens without causing any deterioration of the visual acuity.

The authors discuss the results of cryopexy applied prophylactically in 32 eyes. The freezing was executed at least 6 weeks before the cataract extraction in eyes endangered by retinal detachment. This were the high myopia eyes, so called fellow eyes and eyes in persons aged between 30 and 40 years. Retinal detachment did not occur in either of the observed eyes in the period of 1-5 years.

The authors investigated the ability of vitreous harvested from eyes previously infected with Staphylococcus epidermidis or inflamed with heat-killed cells of the same organism to support subsequent in vitro bacterial growth. Growth of S. epidermidis and S. aureus was not supported by previously inflamed or previously infected vitreous, but Pseudomonas aerugnosa grew in all samples. These findings suggest induction of an antistaphylococcal substance by infection or inflammation of rabbit vitreous by S. epidermidis.

The authors have examined the fate of intravitreally injected liposomes in the aphakic, vitrectomized eye of the rabbit. Liposomes labelled with 125[I]-p-hydroxybenzimidylphosphatidylethanolamine were eliminated rapidly from the intraocular fluid. Three cases of haemolytic glaucoma occurring over two years after massive vitreous haemorrhage in patients with an intact lens iris diaphragm are described. A prospective controlled trial of topical 0.1% dexamethasone drops was undertaken with the purpose of determining its efficacy in the prevention of aphakic macular edema.
