AIMS: Hyperhomocysteinaemia is a risk factor for congestive heart failure, especially in women. We investigated if homocysteine promotes left ventricular (LV) remodelling.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined cross-sectional relations of plasma total homocysteine to echocardiographic LV structure and function in 2697 Framingham Heart Study participants (mean age 58 years, 58% women) free of heart failure and previous myocardial infarction. Adjusting for age and height, plasma homocysteine was positively related to LV mass, wall thickness, and relative wall thickness in women (p=0.0004-0.04), but

Adipose stem cells (ASCs) are a source of regenerative cells available for autologous transplantation to hearts. We compared protective actions of ASC sheets on rat myocardial infarction (MI) in comparison with those of skeletal myoblast cell sheets. Their effects on infarcted hearts were evaluated by biological, histochemical as well as physiological analyses. ASC sheets secreted higher concentrations of angiogenic factors (HGF, VEGF, and bFGF; P < 0.05) under normoxic and hypoxic conditions than those of myoblast cell sheets, associated with reduction of cell apoptosis (P < 0.05). Like myobl

A one-and-a-half-year-old spayed female domestic shorthaired cat, originally obtained as a stray, presented with a two-day history of lethargy, anorexia, and progressive dyspnea. Point-of-care ultrasound showed marked bilateral pleural effusion and a small volume of ascites. Thoracocentesis resulted in the removal of 220 mL of protein poor transudate. Subsequently, a gallop was auscultated and an echocardiogram was performed. Significant findings on echocardiography were a dilated cardiomyopathy phenotype characterized by biventricular eccentric hypertrophy with normal left ventricular diastol

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is observed in arterial hypertension, heart failure, ischemic heart disease, and pulmonary pathology, particularly, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD in turn is a risk factor for developing these cardiovascular diseases and various arrhythmias. In the coronavirus disease (COVID) situation, such comorbid patients are the most vulnerable group with a high risk of adverse outcomes. The relevance of the relationship between COPD and coronavirus infection is explained by the similarity of clinical and pathophysiological manifestations, creating

BACKGROUND: Mitral valve apparatus is complex and involves the mitral annulus, the leaflets, the chordae tendinae, the papillary muscles as well as the left atrial and ventricular myocardium. Secondary mitral regurgitation is a consequence of regional or global left ventricle remodeling due to an acute myocardial infarction (75% of cases) or idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (25% of cases). It is associated with an increase in mortality and poor outcome. There is a potential survival benefit deriving from the reduction in the degree of severity of mitral regurgitation. So the correction of the

INTRODUCTION: The function of the heart after successful transcatheter edge‑to‑edge mitral valve repair (TMVR) remains not fully investigated.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to assess the direct impact of effective TMVR on the strains of the left atrium (LA), the left ventricle (LV), and the right ventricle (RV) in patients with functional mitral regurgitation due to coronary artery disease or dilated cardiomyopathy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Out of a group that successfully underwent TMVR, we selected 28 patients for the analysis. The remodeling of the LA, the LV, and the RV as well as th

Over the last half century, surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) has evolved to offer a durable and efficient valve haemodynamically, with low procedural complications that allows favourable remodelling of left ventricular (LV) structure and function. The latter has become more challenging among elderly patients, particularly following trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Precise understanding of myocardial adaptation to pressure and volume overloading and its responses to valve surgery requires comprehensive assessments from aortic valve energy loss, valvular-vascular impedanc

OBJECTIVES: Corin is a protease that converts pro-atrial natriuretic peptide (pro-ANP) to ANP. While the involvement of ANP in the cardiovascular regulation is well established, there is increasing evidence that the pregnant uterus produces ANP, which promotes spiral artery remodeling. The present study examines the alterations in corin and PCSK6, a key enzyme in the conversion of pro-corin to corin, in the placenta of hyperinsulinemic dams (HD) featuring pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on female Wistar rats. Rats were rendered hyperinsulin

The "athletic heart" is characterized by hypertrophy and dilation of the heart, in addition to functional and electrical remodeling. The aim of this study was to provide reference 2-dimensional (2DE) and 3-dimensional (3DE) echocardiographic measurements in a large database on draft-eligible elite ice hockey players and to determine the frequency of occult cardiac anomalies in this cohort of athletes. In this prospective cohort study, we performed a comprehensive cardiac assessment of the 100 top draft picks selected by the National Hockey League. Complete 2DE and 3DE examinations were perform

Autonomic control of the heart has a significant influence over development of life threatening arrhythmias that can lead to sudden cardiac death. Sympathetic activity is known to be upregulated during these conditions and hence the sympathetic nerves present a target for treatment. However, a better understanding of the anatomy and physiology of cardiac sympathetic nerves is required for the progression of clinical interventions. This review explores the organization of the cardiac sympathetic nerves, from the preganglionic origin to the postganglionic innervations, and provides an overview o

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although it is generally accepted that non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, the presence of abnormalities in cardiac function among NAFLD children is limited and controversial. Aim of the study was to detect cardiac abnormalities/dysfunction in a paediatric population of NAFLD.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Anthropometric, laboratory, cardiovascular fitness, 24 h blood pressure monitoring and Doppler echocardiography parameters were obtained in 50 untreated children (37 males; mean age 12.2 + 2.5) with biopsy-proven NAFLD

Both gain- and loss-of-function mutations in the SCN5A gene, which encodes the alpha-subunit of the cardiac voltage-gated Na+ channel Na(v)1.5, are well established to underlie hereditary arrhythmic syndromes (cardiac channelopathies) such as the type 3 long QT syndrome, cardiac conduction diseases, Brugada syndrome, sick sinus syndrome, atrial standstill and numerous overlap syndromes. Although patch-clamp studies in heterologous expression systems have provided important information to understand the genotype-phenotype relationships of these diseases, they could not clarify how mutations can

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a rare but deadly congenital malformation, which can be created experimentally in the chick embryo by left atrial ligation (LAL). The goal of this study was to examine the cellular changes leading to the profound remodeling of ventricular myocardial architecture that occurs in this model. Hypoplasia of left heart structures was produced after 3H-thymidine prelabeling by partial LAL at stage 24, thereby reducing its volume, and redistributing blood preferentially to the developing right ventricle (RV). Controls included both sham-operated and intact sta

BACKGROUND: The independent prognostic significance of left atrial enlargement is not yet completely clear. We investigated the association between left atrial enlargement and risk of ischemic stroke in elderly treated hypertensive patients.
METHODS: The occurrence of ischemic stroke was evaluated in 1,191 elderly treated hypertensive patients (age range = 60-90 years). Left atrium diameter (cm) was indexed by body surface area (m(2)) and subjects were divided into those with normal or enlarged (≥2.4cm/m(2)) left atrium.
RESULTS: During the follow-up (9.1±4.9 years; range = 0.4-20 years), 13

Elevated levels of ambient co-pollutants are associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes shown by epidemiology studies. The role of particulate matter (PM) and ozone (O3) as co-pollutants in this association is unclear. We hypothesize that cardiac function following PM and O3 exposure is variably affected by genetic determinants (Nppa and Npr1 genes) and age. Heart function was measured before and after 2 days each of the following exposure sequence; (1) 2-h filtered air (FA) and 3-h carbon black (CB; 0.5 microg/m(3)); (2) 2-h O3 (0.6 ppm) and 3-h FA; (3) 5-h FA; and, (4) 2-h O3 and 3-h CB

BACKGROUNDS: Non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia. AF is caused by electrophysiological abnormalities and alteration of atrial tissues, which leads to the generation of abnormal electrical impulses. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane-bound vesicles released by all cell types. Large EVs (lEVs) are secreted by the outward budding of the plasma membrane during cell activation or cell stress. lEVs are thought to act as vehicles for miRNAs to modulate cardiovascular function, and to be involved in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases (

RATIONALE: Although surgical treatment strategies for patients with extensive thoracic aortic disease involving the aortic arch have improved considerably, the impact of stent graft length and placement site on aortic remodeling at long-term follow-up is not fully understood, and the protection of the Adamkiewicz artery (AKA) using the frozen elephant trunk (FET) method is also unclear.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was a 69-year-old man with diabetic nephropathy who became increasingly fatigued and started maintenance hemodialysis 6 months prior to admission. At 64 years, he underwent clippi

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to identify the key morphological and functional features in secondary mitral regurgitation (sMR) and their prognostic impact on outcome.
BACKGROUND: Secondary sMR in patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction typically results from distortion of the underlying cardiac architecture. The morphological components which may account for the clinical impact of sMR have not been systematically assessed or correlated with clinical outcomes.
METHODS: Morphomic and functional network profiling were performed on a cohort of patients with stable heart
