Harnessing PGPR inoculation through exogenous foliar application of salicylic acid and microbial extracts for improving rice growth.

Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) should effectively colonize along the plant root to enhance the plant and soil health. The present investigation aims to improve the PGPR-mediated plant health benefits through above-ground foliar management. A green fluorescent protein-tagged PGPR strain, Pseudomonas chlororaphis (ZSB15-M2) was inoculated in a nonautoclaved agricultural soil before rice culturing. Salicylic acid and cell extracts of Corynebacterium glutamicum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a supply of hormonal and inducer compounds were applied on the foliage of the 10-days-old ric

Diurnal changes in photochemical efficiency, the reduction state of Q, radiationless energy dissipation, and non-photochemical fluorescence quenching in cacti exposed to natural sunlight in northern Venezuela.

Diurnal measurements of chlorophyll a fluorescence from cacti (Nopalea cochenillifera, Opuntia ficus-indica, and Opuntia wentiana) growing in northern Venezuela were used to determine photochemical fluorescence quenching related to the reduction state of the primary electron acceptor of PS II as well as non-photochemical fluorescence quenching which reflects the fraction of energy going primarily into radiationless deexcitation. The cladodes used in this study were oriented such that one surface received direct sunlight in the morning and the other one during the afternoon. Both surfaces exhib…

Hierarchical physiological sensitivity of the coral, Orbicella faveolata, to suspended sediment and elevated temperature.

Coral reefs are increasingly exposed to multiple environmental stressors, including ocean warming and elevated turbidity from coastal development, dredging, and sediment resuspension. Understanding how these stressors affect coral physiology is essential for improving sediment management and protecting reef ecosystems. We investigated the short-term physiological responses of the Caribbean reef-building coral, Orbicella faveolata, to suspended sediment and elevated temperature during controlled 72-h laboratory experiments. Coral fragments were first exposed in independent chamber-sump systems

Genotypic difference in yield response to far-red light in dwarf tomato: explained by fruit sink and source strength and predicted by seedlings' height plasticity.

Supplemental far-red (FR) light can enhance tomato yield and fruit soluble sugar content, yet its effects across genotypes remain poorly understood. The aims of this study were to determine whether genotypic differences in yield response to FR light are driven by dry matter production or partitioning and to identify an early predictive indicator (seed or seedling stage) of FR responsiveness in dwarf tomato genotypes. We studied 23 dwarf tomato genotypes for yield and fruit sugar responses to supplemental FR. To determine whether cultivars appearing non-responsive to FR exhibit stage-specific s

Phenotypic Plasticity of Photochemical Traits and Antioxidant Responsiveness Confer Photosynthetic Resilience in Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) Under Phosphorus Deficiency: The Pivotal Role of Cyclic Electron Flow.

Phosphorus (P) deficiency is a major factor governing peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) productivity, and the physiological mechanisms by which different genotypes (with contrasting photosynthetic capacities) coordinate carbon assimilation and photoprotection remain elusive. This study elucidated the strategic divergence among different peanut genotypes in their foliar photosystems to perform physiological homeostasis under low-phosphorus (LP) conditions. Based on a peanut mini-core collection, six representative accessions with contrasting photosynthetic capacities were selected and categorized in

Three-year field evaluation of a rhizobacterial consortium improving maize growth and yield under reduced N-fertilization and modulating soil respiration.

Ensuring global food security while protecting soil health requires sustainable agricultural innovations, such as the use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). However, excessive nitrogen fertilization in semi-arid maize systems contributes to soil salinization, groundwater contamination, and declining nutrient efficiency, underscoring the need for field-validated microbial strategies that reduce fertilizer inputs without compromising yield. This study presents the results of a three-year field trial (2023-2025) conducted under semi-arid maize production conditions, evaluating a func

Hydrogen Sulfide Regulates Energy Production to Delay Leaf Senescence Induced by Drought Stress in Arabidopsis.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a novel gasotransmitter in both mammals and plants. H2S plays important roles in various plant developmental processes and stress responses. Leaf senescence is the last developmental stage and is a sequential degradation process that eventually leads to leaf death. A mutation of the H2S-producing enzyme-encoding gene L-cysteine desulfhydrase1 (DES1) leads to premature leaf senescence but the underlying mechanisms are not clear. In this present study, wild-type, DES1 defective mutant (des1) and over-expression (OE-DES1) Arabidopsis plants were used to investigate the u

Eutrophic urban ponds suffer from cyanobacterial blooms: Dutch examples.

Ponds play an important role in urban areas. However, cyanobacterial blooms counteract the societal need for a good water quality and pose serious health risks for citizens and pets. To provide insight into the extent and possible causes of cyanobacterial problems in urban ponds, we conducted a survey on cyanobacterial blooms and studied three ponds in detail. Among 3,500 urban ponds in the urbanized Dutch province of North Brabant, 125 showed cyanobacterial blooms in the period 2009-2012. This covered 79% of all locations registered for cyanobacterial blooms, despite the fact that urban ponds
