A free weekly iron-folic acid supplementation and regular deworming program is associated with improved hemoglobin and iron status indicators in Vietnamese women.

BACKGROUND: Anemia due to iron deficiency is recognized as one of the major nutritional deficiencies in women and children in developing countries. Daily iron supplementation for pregnant women is recommended in many countries although there are few reports of these programs working efficiently or effectively. Weekly iron-folic acid supplementation (WIFS) and regular deworming treatment is recommended for non-pregnant women living in areas with high rates of anemia. Following a baseline survey to assess the prevalence of anemia, iron deficiency and soil transmitted helminth infections, we impl

Micronutrient Deficiencies in Heart Transplant Recipients-Scoping Review.

Background/Objectives: Heart transplant recipients are particularly at risk for micronutrient deficiencies due to chronic immunosuppression, metabolic disorders, gastrointestinal absorption disorders, and increased postoperative demand. Despite a growing body of evidence suggesting their clinical relevance, the prevalence, characteristics, and consequences of these deficiencies remain poorly defined. The aim of this review was to assess of selected micronutrient deficiencies in personnel after heart vaccination and risk factors for their control. Methods: This scoping review was conducted in a

Effect of oral vitamin C administration along with iron supplementation for treating anaemia among adolescent girls - Protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anemia among adolescent girls is a worldwide public health problem. Although anemia has several causes, the most common and significant is iron deficiency. Treatment of anemia with iron alone may result in reduced compliance on account of adverse effects. Various studies have revealed that use of vitamin C in addition to iron improves its absorption and reduces the ill effects of the therapy. However, a concrete evidence of adding vitamin C to iron for treating iron deficiency anemia is lacking. AIMS: Protocol for current systematic review was prepared and registered with the aim

Assessment of the Dose-Response Relationship Between Folate Exposure and Cognitive Impairment: Synthesizing Data from Documented Studies.

The dose-response relationship between folate levels and cognitive impairment among individuals with vitamin B12 deficiency is an essential component of a risk-benefit analysis approach to regulatory and policy recommendations regarding folic acid fortification. Epidemiological studies provide data that are potentially useful for addressing this research question, but the lack of analysis and reporting of data in a manner suitable for dose-response purposes hinders the application of the traditional evidence synthesis process. This study aimed to estimate a quantitative dose-response relations

Moderately high intake of folic acid has a negative impact on mouse embryonic development.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of neural tube defects has diminished considerably since the implementation of food fortification with folic acid (FA). However, the impact of excess FA intake, particularly during pregnancy, requires investigation. In a recent study, we reported that a diet supplemented with 20-fold higher FA than the recommended intake for rodents had adverse effects on embryonic mouse development at embryonic days (E)10.5 and 14.5. In this report, we examined developmental outcomes in E14.5 embryos after administering a diet supplemented with 10-fold higher FA than recommended to p

Knowledge and clinical practice regarding folic acid among obstetrician-gynecologists.

OBJECTIVE: To assess obstetrician-gynecologists' knowledge of and clinical practice concerning folate. METHODS: We mailed surveys on nutrition during pregnancy to the 230 ACOG Fellows who are members of the Collaborative Ambulatory Research Network and to a random sample of 800 Fellows who are not members of the Network. Our results focus on questions concerning folate. RESULTS: We analyzed 488 surveys (a 47.4% response rate). Approximately two thirds of respondents screen their pregnant patients for folate intake. Fewer (53%) screen their nonpregnant patients of childbearing age. Those who

Biochemical signs of impaired cobalamin function do not affect hematological parameters in young infants: results from a double-blind randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Whereas iron deficiency is considered the leading cause of anemia in infants, cobalamin deficiency is foremost characterized by developmental delay, and the typical macrocytic anemia is confined to severe and longstanding cobalamin deficiency in this age group. Hematological parameters were investigated in 4-mo-old infants with biochemical signs of impaired cobalamin function who participated in a randomized controlled cobalamin intervention study at 6 wk. METHODS: One hundred and seven infants were randomly assigned to receive either an intramuscular injection with 400 μg cobalam

Alcohol and cancer: genetic and nutritional aspects.

Chronic alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for cancer of upper aero-digestive tract (oro-pharynx, hypopharynx, larynx and oesophagus), the liver, the colo-rectum and the breast. Evidence has accumulated that acetaldehyde is predominantly responsible for alcohol-associated carcinogenesis. Acetaldehyde is carcinogenic and mutagenic, binds to DNA and protein, destroys the folate molecule and results in secondary cellular hyper-regeneration. Acetaldehyde is produced by mucosal and cellular alcohol dehydrogenase, cytochrome P450 2E1 and through bacterial oxidation. Its generation and/or its

Hematologic complications of gastric bypass for morbid obesity.

Of 530 patients who have had a gastric bypass operation for morbid obesity at Allegheny General Hospital, 41 had decreases in serum iron, vitamin B12, and/or folate levels. These abnormalities were detected eight months to eight years (median, two years) after the operation. The hemoglobin level ranged from 7.4 to 14.1 gm/dl at the time of detection, and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) ranged from 58 to 119 cu microns. The most common problem was combined iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies. Physicians should be aware that folate, vitamin B12, and iron deficiencies occur after gastric bypass, thou

Adherence to iron-folic acid supplementation and its associated factors among pregnant women in Kenya: A multilevel data analysis of the 2022 Kenyan Demographic and Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Iron and folic acid deficiency is a global public health issue, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Adherence to iron-folic acid supplementation (IFAS) remains low in Kenya. Despite several studies on IFAS adherence in Kenya, they do not assess the national scope and clustering effects using advanced analytical models. Therefore, we aimed to assess IFAS adherence and its associated factors among pregnant women in Kenya using data from the 2022 Kenyan Demographic and Health Survey. METHODS: A secondary data analysis was conducted using data from the 2022 Kenya Demogra…

Evaluation of the relationship of digital phototrichogram findings of patients with diffuse hair loss with blood TSH, ferritin and vitamin B12 levels.

OBJECTIVE: Telogen effluvium (TE) is a type of alopecia that is frequently seen in women. Among factors resulting in hair loss, many reasons such as endocrine diseases, nutrition disorders, stress, anemia, low ferritin levels, vitamin B12 deficiency, and thyroid diseases are found. A digital phototrichogram is one of the non-invasive methods of diagnosis in the evaluation of alopecia. In this study, it was aimed to compare biochemical parameters of female patients with diffuse hair loss with phototrichogram findings. METHODS: 108 female patients with diffuse hair loss were included in the stu

Baseline iron and low-grade inflammation modulate the effectiveness of iron supplementation: evidence from follow-up of pregnant Sri Lankan women.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the effectiveness of iron supplementation in relation to baseline iron and inflammatory status of pregnant women and their offspring in Sri Lanka. METHODS: Apparently healthy women aged 18-36 years at < 12 weeks of gestation prior to receiving any supplementation were randomly recruited at the antenatal clinics. They received 60 mg of elemental iron in combined iron-folic acid pills from 12 weeks of gestation until delivery via the National Maternal Supplementation Programme. Serum ferritins (SF), hemoglobin and high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were assessed. T
