Case Report: Eyebrow pilonidal sinus with bridging scar.

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal sinus is an acquired inflammatory disease associated with trauma and subcutaneous hair implantation, most commonly occurring in the sacrococcygeal region. Facial pilonidal sinus is extremely rare, with only about 10 cases reported globally, all localized to the cheek, and none with associated bridging scar formation. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the first case of an eyebrow pilonidal sinus with a 29-year disease course accompanied by ipsilateral bridging scar formation. A 56-year-old man presented with right eyebrow swelling and intermittent drainage for 29 years followi

Intradural Fibrosis Following Percutaneous Spinal Cord Stimulator Placement: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an established therapy for chronic pain. While hardware complications such as lead migration or infection are well-documented, biological responses such as fibrotic encapsulation are rare and underrecognized. Prior reports of fibrosis related to SCS have been limited to the epidural space, primarily involving paddle leads. We report the first known case of intradural fibrotic scarring following percutaneous SCS implantation, resulting in delayed spinal cord compression and progressive neurologic decline. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old woman

Biocompatibility and biodegradability of multilayered polymeric materials for tissue regeneration.

The tissue regeneration, especially the tympanic membrane regeneration, remains a significant challenge in otorhinolaryngology, necessitating the development of the advanced biomaterials. This study evaluates the biocompatibility and biodegradation of three novel multi-layer polymer scaffolds: KPC (carboxymethyl cellulose/polyethylene oxide/polyvinylpyrrolidone/chitosan), PHC (pullulan/hyaluronic acid/chitosan), and HCA (hyaluronic acid/chitosan/alginate), that designed as biomimetic matrices for tissue repair. The materials were subcutaneously implanted into Wistar rats for 21st and 45th days

Reduced Keratin-Based Bioadhesives for Peri-Implant Soft Tissue Sealing around Transcutaneous Metallic Prostheses.

When a percutaneous metallic implant breaches the skin barrier, the lack of peri-implant soft tissue sealing arising from a foreign body reaction and epithelial downgrowth results in delayed wound healing and closure. This facilitates microbial pathogen entry, leading to infection, inflammation, and ultimately, peri-implantitis. Toward this end, bioglue formulations of -human hair keratin (HHK) and chicken feather keratin coupled with polyphenols, dopamine (DOPA), quercetin (Q), and tannic acid (TA) were developed for peri-implant soft tissue sealing. A freeze-thaw gelation mediated by thiol r

Prevalence of interdigital pilonidal sinus in hair professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study.

Interdigital Pilonidal Sinus (IPNS), also known as barber's disease, is a rare occupational disease that affects hairdressers and barbers. It develops when customers' hair penetrates the webspace between the fingers, causing a foreign body reaction. This cross-sectional study, conducted across all five governorates in Bahrain, aimed to investigate the prevalence of IPNS among hairdressers and barbers in Bahrain. A total of 479 participants (253 male and 226 female) from 384 hairdressing salons and barbershops were selected using a convenience sampling technique. Participants' age, hand dominan

Conjunctival Phlyctenule and Nodular Scleritis in a Patient with Previous Herpes Simplex Virus-2 Exposure: Causative Agent or Innocent Bystander?

INTRODUCTION: Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis is an inflammatory condition arising from a type IV hypersensitivity reaction, presenting with inflamed nodules on the conjunctiva and cornea. Scleritis is a severe ocular inflammation linked to systemic diseases, potentially vision threatening, and involving immune responses similar to phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis. This case report discusses a patient with a history of herpes simplex virus (HSV)-2 infection who primarily developed phlyctenular conjunctivitis and later progressed to nodular scleritis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old female

Itaconate and citrate releasing polymer attenuates foreign body response in biofabricated cardiac patches.

Application of cardiac patches to the heart surface can be undertaken to provide support and facilitate regeneration of the damaged cardiac tissue following ischemic injury. Biomaterial composition is an important consideration in the design of cardiac patch materials as it governs host response to ultimately prevent the undesirable fibrotic response. Here, we investigate a novel patch material, poly (itaconate-co-citrate-co-octanediol) (PICO), in the context of cardiac implantation. Citric acid (CA) and itaconic acid (ITA), the molecular components of PICO, provided a level of protection for

Clinical Application of Three-Dimensional Printing of Polycaprolactone/Beta-Tricalcium Phosphate Implants for Cranial Reconstruction.

Polycaprolactone (PCL) implants are a biodegradable polymeric material with appropriate mechanical strength and durability for use in cranioplasty. They can be manufactured as patient- customized implants using a three-dimensional (3D) printer. Herein, the authors aimed to share our experience in cranioplasty of patients with deformed and asymmetric skulls using PCL/beta- tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) implants.Seven patients underwent cranioplasty using patient-specific PCL/ß-TCP implants. Cranial computed tomography images were converted to a 3D model and mirrored to design a patient-specific

Genetic variants of small airways and interstitial pulmonary disease in children.

Genetic variants of small airways and interstitial pulmonary disease have not been comprehensively studied. This cluster of respiratory disorders usually manifests from early infancy ('lung disease in utero'). In this study, 24 variants linked to these entities are described. The variants involved two genes associated with surfactant metabolism dysfunction (ABCA3 and CSF2RB), two with pulmonary fibrosis (MUC5B and SFTP), one with bronchiectasis (SCNN1B), and one with alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (SERPINA1). A nonsense variant, MUC5B:c.16861G > T, p.Glu5621*, was found in homozygous state in

Analysis of outcomes after revision replacement of failed total temporomandibular joint prostheses.

End-stage disease of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be managed successfully with alloplastic total replacements, but these can fail because of allergy, infection, wear, fracture, and heterotopic development of bone. We prospectively reviewed the outcome data of all patients who required revision of previously placed replacement joints between 2004 and 2016. Data included pain and diet scores using 100mm visual analogue scales (VAS), and interincisal distance recorded before, and at six weeks, six months and 12 months after operation. The reasons for failure and the number of previous pr

Lower gastrointestinal bleeding due to colonic fistula caused by a gossypiboma: Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Even in modern surgery, human mistakes cannot be totally avoided. Retained surgical items are among the most feared ones. Forgotten sponges inside patients can cause a wide range of complications due to the foreign body reaction, called gossypiboma. The incidence of gossypibomas in the literature is probably underreported due to its legal implications; however, we must know its consequences and highlight the importance of the prevention strategies. We present a case where only preventive measures would have avoided its fatal outcome. PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 85-year-old male, pr

Aggressive granulomatosis of the hip: a forgotten mode of aseptic failure.

PURPOSE: It has been acknowledged that implant wear correlates with the risk for periprosthetic osteolysis, being aggressive granulomatosis the worst expression of bone resorption. We sought to determine the clinical, radiological, and histological features of aggressive granulomatosis after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). METHODS: We included nine cases with aggressive granulomatosis of the hip around cemented stems. Indications for revision THA consisted of progressive signs of extensive bone resorption or implant loosening. Mean follow-up since revision THA was 143 months (SD ± 59.4)

Bioglass reconstruction of posterior meatal wall after canal wall down mastoidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Canal wall down (CWD) mastoidectomy has many drawbacks including chronic otorrhea, granulations, dizziness on exposure to cold or hot water and tendency of debris accumulation in the mastoid cavity demanding periodic cleaning. Many of these problems can be solved by reconstruction of the posterior meatal wall (PMW). OBJECTIVES: To assess the results of PMW reconstruction after CWD mastoidectomy for cholesteatoma using bioactive glass (BAG) that is fabricated and built up intraoperatively. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was applied on 20 patients had atticoantral chronic suppura

Orbital floor reconstruction with ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate.

The orbital floor is one of the most frequently broken bones in maxillofacial fracture, and orbital reconstruction is needed in many cases. Various materials are used for orbital floor reconstruction. We report here orbital reconstruction using autologous orbital bone with cyanoacrylate. Entrapped soft tissues were freed and repositioned intraorbitally and bone fragments were gathered with a microscope simultaneously. The bone fragments were fixed to a board of bone with ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate and returned to the orbital fracture site. Of 96 fresh orbital floor fractures, this method was used f
