hRNAi-mediated knock-down of Sphenophorus levis V-ATPase E in transgenic sugarcane (Saccharum spp interspecific hybrid) affects the insect growth and survival.

Transgenic sugarcane expressing V-ATPase subunit E dsRNA affects growth and survival of Sphenophorus levis. Plants being sessile organisms are constantly confronted with several biotic and abiotic stresses. Sugarcane (Saccharum spp) is a major tropical crop widely cultivated for its sugar and other by-products. In Brazil, sugarcane plantations account for significant production losses due to Sphenophorus levis (sugarcane weevil) infestations. With the existing control measures being less effective, there arises a necessity for advanced strategies. Our bioassay injection experiments with V-ATPa

Effect of insecticide-treated bed nets on visceral leishmaniasis incidence in Bangladesh. A retrospective cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a parasitic disease, transmitted by the sand fly species Phlebotomus argentipes in the Indian sub-continent. Effective vector control is highly desirable to reduce vector density and human and vector contact in the endemic communities with the aim to curtail disease transmission. We evaluated the effect of long lasting insecticide treated bed nets (LLIN) and bed nets impregnated with slow-release insecticide tablet K-O TAB 1-2-3 (jointly insecticide-treated nets or ITN) on VL incidence in a highly endemic sub-district (upazila) in Bangladesh. METHODS

Transcriptomic analysis of insecticide resistance in the lymphatic filariasis vector Culex quinquefasciatus.

Culex quinquefasciatus plays an important role in transmission of vector-borne diseases of public health importance, including lymphatic filariasis (LF), as well as many arboviral diseases. Currently, efforts to tackle C. quinquefasciatus vectored diseases are based on either mass drug administration (MDA) for LF, or insecticide-based interventions. Widespread and intensive insecticide usage has resulted in increased resistance in mosquito vectors, including C. quinquefasciatus. Herein, the transcriptome profile of Ugandan bendiocarb-resistant C. quinquefasciatus was explored to identify candi

Phylogeography of Aedes aegypti in Argentina: long-distance colonization and rapid restoration of fragmented relicts after a continental control campaign.

Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti, the main vector of Dengue and Yellow Fever viruses, is present in all the northern and central provinces of Argentina. During 2009, a Dengue outbreak spread broadly throughout the country, causing 27,752 infections in 13 provinces. In Argentina, little is known about the demographic history of this vector, which suffered a drastic decrease in abundance and distribution during a major control campaign performed in the Americas between 1950 and 1960. With the aim of uncovering the past and present events that determined the present distribution of the genetic variabili

Knowledge, attitudes and practices on tsetse and sleeping sickness among communities living in and around Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.

A study was undertaken to investigate knowledge, attitudes and practices about sleeping sickness (human African trypanosomiasis) among communities living in and around Serengeti National Park (SENAPA). Structured questionnaires were administered to a total of 1490 consenting participants. Of the respondents, 924 (62%) knew sleeping sickness, and 807 (87.3%) knew the right place to seek healthcare. Of 924 who knew sleeping sickness, 386 (42%) said the disease was present in the areas they live. Most respondents (85.4%) knew that sleeping sickness infections were acquired in the bush and forest.

Clinical reactivity to insect stings.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Allergy to insect stings remains a hazard worldwide and is the object of updated guidelines on management. This paper reviews the various clinical responses that may occur following an insect sting. RECENT FINDINGS: Although the general population is at slight risk, certain groups are more susceptible, including occasionally stung adult male agricultural workers, hobby honey beekeepers and family members of beekeepers. Individuals with systemic mastocytosis are especially reactive to stings. The body of evidence attesting to the marked beneficial effect that 3-5 years of ve

The people behind the papers - Ximena Gutiérrez Ramos and Leslie Pick.

Body segmentation is an essential process in development that occurs simultaneously in some insect species but sequentially in others. Whether these two modes of body segmentation are controlled by the same molecular mechanisms, however, is unclear. In a new study, Leslie Pick and colleagues establish the painted butterfly Vanessa cardui as an emerging model of sequential body segmentation and evaluate the level of evolutionary conservation of body segmentation genes from simultaneously segmenting Drosophila fruit flies, as well as other species. Worker bees preventing diapause in Bombus terrestris queens via tyrosine metabolism.

The reproductive dormancy (diapause) of bumblebee queens is a major bottleneck for controlled pollination services. We demonstrate that direct social interaction with worker bees rapidly terminates queen diapause and triggers oviposition, bypassing the need for hibernation. This worker bee induction, especially when combined with CO2 treatment, significantly shortens the time to egg-laying compared to conventional methods. Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses identified the activation of tyrosine metabolism as the central mechanism driving this socially induced reproductive switc

Analysis of the activity patterns of two sympatric sandfly siblings of the Lutzomyia longipalpis species complex from Brazil.

Lutzomyia longipalpis s.l. (Lutz & Neiva) (Diptera: Psychodidae) is the main vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Latin America. Differences in copulation songs, pheromones and molecular markers show that L. longipalpis is a species complex in Brazil. The patterns of activity of insect vectors are important in disease transmission. In addition, differences in activity rhythms have a potential role as a temporal reproductive isolation mechanism in closely related species. We compared the activity patterns of males and females of two sympatric species of the Longipalpis complex from Sobral (Ceará

Thermally induced protein modifications in mealworm: Gastrointestinal digestibility and derived bioactive peptides with antioxidants and ACE/DPP-IV inhibitory activities.

Sustainable protein sources from edible insects are gaining attention as alternatives to conventional proteins, yet comprehensive understanding of thermal processing effects on insect protein structure-function relationships remains limited. This study systematically characterized mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) protein across three developmental stages (larval, pupal, adult) and examined thermal-induced conformational changes in pupal-stage proteins subjected to controlled heating (50 °C, 90 °C, 130 °C, 170 °C for 60 min) using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), SDS-PAGE, and size ex

Simultaneous Localization of Biobotic Insects using Inertial Data and Encounter Information.

Several recent research efforts have shown that the bioelectrical stimulation of their neuro-mechanical system can control the locomotion of Madagascar hissing cockroaches (Gromphadorhina portentosa). This has opened the possibility of using these insects to explore centimeter-scale environments, such as rubble piles in urban disaster areas. We present an inertial navigation system based on machine learning modules that is capable of localizing groups of G. portentosa carrying thorax-mounted inertial measurement units. The proposed navigation system uses the agents' encounters with one another

Role of cytochrome P450s in insecticide resistance: impact on the control of mosquito-borne diseases and use of insecticides on Earth.

The fight against diseases spread by mosquitoes and other insects has enormous environmental, economic and social consequences. Chemical insecticides remain the first line of defence but the control of diseases, especially malaria and dengue fever, is being increasingly undermined by insecticide resistance. Mosquitoes have a large repertoire of P450s (over 100 genes). By pinpointing the key enzymes associated with insecticide resistance we can begin to develop new tools to aid the implementation of control interventions and reduce their environmental impact on Earth. Recent technological advan

Sequence and organization of the mitochondrial genome of the Chagas disease vector, Triatoma dimidiata.

The 17 019 bp mitochondrial genome of Triatoma dimidiata is composed of thirteen protein coding sequences, twenty-two tRNAs, small and large ribosomal units, and a control region. The gene order and orientation are identical to that of Drosophila yakuba. The nucleotide composition is biased toward adenine and thymine (69.5% A + T). The 2.1 kb putative control region, known as the A + T rich region in most insects, has an A + T bias of 66%, but contains a 400 bp sequence that is 77.5% A + T and two other distinct regions: (1) one with a lower A + T bias (60.1%) and (2) a region of eight tandem

RETRACTED: Curcumin-Injected Musca domestica Larval Hemolymph: Cecropin Upregulation and Potential Anticancer Effect.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Over recent decades, much attention has been given to imply the natural products in cancer therapy alone or in combination with other established procedures. Insects have a rich history in traditional medicine across the globe, which holds promise for the future of natural product drug discovery. Cecropins, peptides produced by insects, are components of a defense system against infections and are well known to exert antimicrobial and antitumor capabilities. The present study aimed to investigate, for the first time, the role of curcumin in enhancing the anticancer effect of Musca domestica la

The effect of pyriproxyfen on the concentration of circulating metabolic fuel molecules and chemical elements in the hemolymph of Acraea horta L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae): A quantitative analysis.

Many pollinating insects expand their niche to adjacent agricultural areas and are, therefore, exposed to chemical insecticides. Acraea horta L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) is a pollinator butterfly widely distributed in the Southern African region. The objectives of this work were to evaluate carbohydrate, lipid and chemical elements in the hemolymph of A. horta exposed to pyriproxyfen, a juvenile hormone analog (JHA). Last instar larvae (L6: day 1 or day 2) were topically exposed to an aqueous solution of pyriproxyfen (100 μg of the active ingredient per insect) or to diluent (control group).

Impact of mediterranean fruit fly rearing residues and biological supplementation on performance of gimmizah chicks.

For a transformation of the global food system towards sustainability, circular approaches and nutrient-rich side-stream valorization are mandatory. Moreover, affordable and sustainable alternatives to corn, soy, and fish meal are needed in poultry production. Recently, insects and their derived products have gained research interest as alternative sources of conventional feed ingredients in poultry nutrition. The Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly; Ceratitis capitata) production industry using sterile insect technology amasses thousands tonnes of rearing residues annually. This study is the firs

Distribution and natural infection status of synantrophic triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, reveals new epidemiological scenarios for chagas disease in the Highlands of Colombia.

INTRODUCTION: Updating the distribution and natural infection status of triatomine bugs is critical for planning, prioritizing, and implementing strategies to control Chagas disease (CD), especially after vector reduction programs. After carrying out a control program, the Department of Boyaca contains the highest number of Colombian municipalities certified by PAHO to be free of intradomiciliary transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi by Rhodnius prolixus. The present work describes the spatial distribution, natural infection (NI), and molecular characterization of T. cruzi in synanthropic triatomi
