Antimicrobial activity of alcohols from Musca domestica.

Information on the stimulatory and inhibitory effects of cuticular alcohols on growth and virulence of insecticidal fungi is unavailable. Therefore, we set out to describe the content of cuticular and internal alcohols in the body of housefly larvae, pupae, males and females. The total cuticular alcohols in larvae, males and females of Musca domestica were detected in comparable amounts (4.59, 3.95 and 4.03 μg g(-1) insect body, respectively), but occurred in smaller quantities in pupae (2.16 μg g(-1)). The major free alcohol in M. domestica larvae was C(12:0) (70.4%). Internal alcohols of M.

A long-term monitoring study of chlorophyll, microbial contaminants, and pesticides in a coastal residential stormwater pond and its adjacent tidal creek.

Stormwater ponds are commonly used in residential and commercial areas to control flooding. The accumulation of urban contaminants in stormwater ponds can lead to water-quality problems including nutrient enrichment, chemical contamination, and bacterial contamination. This study presents 5 years of monitoring data assessing water quality of a residential subdivision pond and adjacent tidal creek in coastal South Carolina, USA. The stormwater pond is eutrophic, as described by elevated concentrations of chlorophyll and phosphorus, and experiences periodic cyanobacterial blooms. A maximum month

Effects of insect-specific viruses on transmission, infection, and replication of arboviruses in co-infected mosquitoes: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Climate change, globalization, and urbanization continue to reshape the ecology of vector-borne diseases, allowing mosquito-transmitted arboviruses to expand into previously non-endemic areas. Increasing insecticide resistance, ecological disruption, and declining efficacy of conventional vector control strategies have prompted an interest in microbe-based alternatives. Insect-specific viruses (ISVs), a group of viruses restricted to replicating in arthropods like mosquitoes, have emerged as potential modulators of mosquito vector competence. This systematic review assesses current…

Low ITN utilization among households in SWEPR Ethiopia: challenge for malaria elimination, a mixed design approach.

INTRODUCTION: To prevent malaria starting from 2005 more than 2 billion insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) have been distributed globally. Even though Ethiopia has been doing nationwide ITN distribution starting from 2016 with 64% ITN coverage, there is a significant gap in its utilization in different settings. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the utilization of ITN and associated factors among households in SWEPRS, 2023. METHODS: Community-based mixed study designs were applied in the present study. Firstly, the malaria area was selected purposively and the study participants were reached

Persistent alterations in seizure susceptibility, drug responsiveness and comorbidities associated with chemical kindling after neonatal exposure to an organophosphate.

Developmental exposure to organophosphates (OPs), at doses that do not cause cholinergic crisis, induces profound and lasting alterations in different neurotransmitter systems, which contribute to several behavioral outcomes. The present work examines whether neonatal exposure to low dose of chlorpyrifos (CPF), a widely used OP insecticide, alters the general excitability of the adult brain, its responsiveness to drugs with antiepileptic properties, the process of chemical kindling and the kindling-induced behavioral outcomes. Neonatal rats were exposed to daily doses of CPF (1 mg/kg) or dimet

Current update on malaria in pregnancy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Malaria during pregnancy poses significant risks to both the mother and the developing fetus. For pregnant women, the infection can result in severe illness and even death. Parasite sequestration in the placenta can cause maternal anemia and increase the risk of mortality both during and after childbirth. Malaria is also a major contributor to stillbirths and preterm births. Infected placental tissue can impede fetal growth, resulting in low birth weight, which is linked to delayed growth and cognitive development in the child. Furthermore, malaria during pregnancy remains a major

Intermittent preventive treatment with Sulphadoxine-Pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) is associated with protection against sub-microscopic P. falciparum infection in pregnant women during the low transmission dry season in southwestern Cameroon: A Semi - longitudinal study.

The current guidelines for malaria prevention and control during pregnancy in Africa is predicated on the prevention of infection and/or disease through intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp), insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and effective malaria case diagnosis and management. Concerns that increasing SP resistance in some areas of SSA may have compromised IPTp-SP efficacy prompted this contemporaneous study, designed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of sub-microscopic infection in parturient women during the low transmission season in Mutengene, a rapidly growing semi-

Pigeonpea sterility mosaic virus: a legume-infecting Emaravirus from South Asia.

UNLABELLED: Pigeonpea sterility mosaic virus (PPSMV), a species of the genus Emaravirus, is the causal agent of sterility mosaic disease (SMD) of pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp]. This disease, dubbed the 'green plague', as the infected plants remain in the vegetative state without flower production, has been reported from India and a few other South-East Asian countries. SMD is estimated to result in an annual yield loss of over US$300 million in India alone. The aetiology of SMD, which remained a mystery for over 70 years, was resolved with the discovery of PPSMV in 2000 and its complet

Point mutations associated with organophosphate and carbamate resistance in Chinese strains of Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Acetylcholinesterase resistance has been well documented in many insects, including several mosquito species. We tested the resistance of five wild, Chinese strains of the mosquito Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus to two kinds of pesticides, dichlorvos and propoxur. An acetylcholinesterase gene (ace1) was cloned and sequenced from a pooled sample of mosquitoes from these five strains and the amino acids of five positions were found to vary (V185M, G247S, A328S, A391T, and T682A). Analysis of the correlation between mutation frequencies and resistance levels (LC50) suggests that two point mutatio

Anopheles larval habitats seasonality and environmental factors affecting larval abundance and distribution in Arjo-Didessa sugar cane plantation, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Water resource development projects are essential for increasing agricultural productivity and ensuring food security. However, these activities require the modification of pre-existing environmental settings, which may alter mosquito larval habitat availability and seasonality. The intensive utilization of current adult vector control tools results in insecticide resistance among the main vectors. When coupled with behavioural resistances, a shift in malaria vector feeding and resting behaviours could compromise the effectiveness of the current adult vector control strategies. Thu…

Field evaluation of 3-(N-acetyl-n-butyl) aminopropionic acid ethyl ester - IR3535 as a spatial repellent to control malaria: A Randomised, Before-After-Control-Intervention trial.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. Increasing mosquito resistance to insecticides can significantly limit current vector control strategies. Spatial repellents represent a promising complementary tool by disrupting mosquito human-seeking behaviour. This trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of IR3535 as a spatial repellent in Tambai, a high-transmission rural area in central Mozambique. METHODS: This was a randomised, Before-After-Control-Intervention trial. Four Tambai blocks were randomly selected, with 40 households randomly assigned to receiv

Toxicity of ivermectin to bed bugs (Cimex hemipterus) and risk factors associated with infestation in Kwale County, coastal Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Bed bugs (Cimex spp.) are obligate ectoparasites that have long been associated with human dwellings, causing discomfort and psychosocial distress. Conventional control strategies relying on insecticides are increasingly challenged by resistance, necessitating alternative interventions. Ivermectin, an endectocide known to impact various neglected tropical diseases and hematophagous arthropods, is currently being assessed for malaria vector control. This study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of ivermectin on Cimex hemipterus, the predominant bed bug species in Africa, within the fram

An underestimated risk? Analysis of outdoor malaria transmission in an urban area of Southern Benin.

BACKGROUND: Insecticidal pressure on Anopheles gambiae sensu lato populations has contributed not only to the selection of physiological resistance mechanisms but also to behavioral adaptations, including shifts in biting and resting patterns. Within this framework, we compared the transmission of malaria by Anopheles gambiae s.l. between indoor and outdoor households in the commune of Porto-Novo in southern Benin. METHODS: From April to September 2019, human landing catches were conducted indoors and outdoors in four neighborhoods of Porto-Novo to assess the risk of malaria transmission outsi

Urban malaria in Accra, Ghana: transmission risk and influence of irrigated vegetable farms.

Urban malaria transmission in sub-Saharan Africa is often underestimated, emphasizing the need for research on vector distribution, abundance, behavior, and infectivity in cities. Urban malaria transmission has been on the rise across sub-Saharan Africa since 2003. Also, monitoring Anopheles populations is crucial for developing effective interventions. This study examined the biting and resting habits, distribution, abundance, and Plasmodium infection of malaria vectors in Accra. Adult malaria vectors were collected using human landing catch (HLC) and Prokopack aspiration (PPK) at ten sites i

Assessing Wolbachia circulation in wild populations of phlebotomine sand flies from Spain and Morocco: implications for control of leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases such as leishmaniasis exert a huge burden of morbidity and mortality that are mainly controlled through vector control. The increasing threat of insecticide-resistant vectors entails incorporating more vector control interventions to eliminate these diseases. Introduction of Wolbachia into wild vector populations has been suggested as a potential vector control measure that would require extensive regional knowledge. The aim of this work is to estimate the prevalence of Wolbachia infection and monitor circulating strains in wild sand fly populations from Spain

Assessment of vector control strategies based on mass Aedes (Stegomyia) mosquito trapping (AGOs traps) pilot study in a US-Mexico border region of South Texas.

BACKGROUND: Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti and Ae. (Stegomyia) albopictus mosquitoes are major vectors of diseases including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. The excessive use of chemical insecticides has caused resistance in mosquito populations, along with negative environmental impacts and harm to non-target organisms. In this regard, mosquito control strategies, such as passive mass trapping interventions with autocidal gravid ovitraps (AGO) offer a promising alternative. Here we report the results of a pilot study evaluating a passive mass trapping treatment using AGOs against Ae.
