Histopathological changes of reproductive organs of goats immunized with Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis killed vaccine.

Caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is characterized by the development of abscesses, mainly in superficial and internal lymph nodes, visceral and reproductive organs in small ruminants. This study aims to examine the histopathological changes in reproductive organs of goats immunized with killed vaccine of C. pseudotuberculosis. In this study, twenty four (24) clinically healthy bucks and does were divided into four groups A, B, C and D. Animals in groups A and B were immunized with 0.5 and 1% formalin killed vaccine, respectively; followed by a booster do…

Health-related quality of life in children with PFAPA syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Conventionally, PFAPA syndrome is considered as a benign disease compared to other recurrent fevers because it completely passes before adulthood. However, in our clinical practice, fever episodes have a huge impact on daily activities. METHODS: Observational cohort study using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL™ 4.0) Generic Core and Fatigue Scales. PedsQL™ uses a modular approach to measure the HRQOL in children with acute and chronic health conditions. We used pediatric FMF patients as the control group. RESULTS: We included 33 children with PFAPA and compared the

SUSPECTED HYPOVITAMINOSIS A-ASSOCIATED SALT GLAND ADENITIS IN NORTHERN ROCKHOPPER PENGUINS ( EUDYPTES MOSELEYI).

Supraorbital salt-excreting glands are present in at least 10 avian orders and are largest in marine species, including penguins. Diseases of the avian salt gland have been described infrequently. From September 2015, five captive northern rockhopper penguins ( Eudyptes moseleyi) were presented over a 6-wk period for unilateral or bilateral supraorbital swellings. In September 2016, two cases recurred and two additional cases were identified. Histopathology demonstrated salt gland adenitis with extensive squamous metaplasia. Blood plasma testing demonstrated marked vitamin A and E deficiencies

[Kikuchi-Fujimoto's disease and adult-onset Still's disease. A rare co-occurence].

Kikuchi-Fujimoto's disease and adult-onset Still's disease are rare inflammatory conditions with overlapping clinical features. Adult-onset Still's disease causes high fevers, a typical salmon-colored rash, and joint pain. The principal symptom of Kikuchi's disease is cervical lymphadenopathy with typical histopathological features including extensive necrosis of the involved lymph nodes. Here, we report on a rare case of concurrent adult-onset Still's disease and Kikuchi-Fujimoto syndrome in a young Caucasian patient.

Active surveillance of adverse events following childhood immunization in Singapore.

INTRODUCTION: In Singapore, reporting of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) was historically passive. In 2009, Health Sciences Aut … nce of AEFI enabled the detection of a 5-fold increase (95% CI 1.2-33.1) in BCG-associated regional lymphadenitis in April 2010, which triggered follow-up safety analysis to guide public health advice. CONCLUSIONS: Hospital-based active surveillance can enhance signal detection and follow-up investigations of AEFI. Subsequently, public health bodies are better …

Oral aphthous-like lesions, PFAPA syndrome: a review.

Aphthous ulcers are the most common oral mucosal lesions in the general population. Several precipitating factors for aphthous ulcers are suggested to operate on subjects with genetic predisposition. Sometimes aphthous ulcers can be the sign of systemic diseases. Therefore, it is essential to establish a correct diagnosis to determine suitable therapy. There are several diseases potentially responsible for oral ulcers. Sometimes appearance of periodic oral ulcers coincides with periodic fever and other symptoms leading to the diagnosis of a rare childhood disease: PFAPA (periodic fever, aphtho

[Tularaemia outbreak in Kosovo].

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of a first case of tularaemia in Kosovo in 2000 and the subsequent appearance of other cases provided us with an opportunity to study this infection, seen at the Moroccan medical-surgical field hospital set up in Mitrovica during our stay in Kosovo. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective study involving all patients with suspected tularaemia consulting at the hospital and subsequently referred to dermatologists and the ENT practitioners between 3 January and 27 August 2002. For each patient, clinical and treatment history data were studied using a preset form.

[Cat scratch disease--course, diagnosis].

Cat scratch disease is an infection which often causes regional lymphadenopathy. Bartenolloses present a growing health problem both in human and veterinary medicine. They may be etiological fevers of unknown etiology, endocarditis, pneumonia, meningitis. The mildest clinical form is the cat scratch disease which proceeds as a mild regional lymphadenopathy. It is caused by Bartonellosis henselae. Animals, especially cats, are the sourse of infections. Lymphadenitis may remain for many weeks and requires differentiation from other causes of regional lymphadenopathy. Three typical cases of the d…

Streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis with toxic shock syndrome following cervical adenitis.

In the recent years an increase of serious invasive infections due to Group A Streptococcus have been reported. Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive soft tissue infection characterized by necrosis of the subcutaneous tissues and superficial fascia. We report a case of necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome following cervical adenitis in a previously healthy 11-month-old boy. Cultures from blood and the necrotic lymph node grew Group A Streptococcus. Group A Streptococcus belonging to M1 serotype and producing streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin, SPE A was identified. Recurrence of a deep neck infection: a clinical indication of an underlying congenital lesion.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the computed tomographic (CT) and clinical findings of those entities that may present as recurrent deep neck infections. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twelve patients with recurrent deep neck infections and CT scans were retrospectively identified since 1990. Their CT scans and medical histories were reviewed. The diagnosis was pathologically confirmed in all cases. RESULTS: The CT scans revealed an abscess or a localized infected cyst in the deep soft tissues of the neck, with varying degrees of associated inflammatory change in the adjacent soft tissues. The diagnoses in the

Disseminated coccidioidomycosis with lung, skin and lymph node involvement: report of a case.

Coccidioidomycosis is a deep mycotic infection endemic to the southwestern United States. Although it has also been reported to occur in nonendemic areas, it has rarely been reported in Taiwan. We report a case of disseminated coccidioidomycosis which is the first such case reported on this island. The 28-year-old male patient developed a nonproductive cough and fever while travelling in Arizona. Chest roentgenogram revealed infiltration of the right lower lung field and enlargement of the right paratracheal lymph nodes. The titer for the complement fixation test for coccidioidin was 1:32. Cat-scratch bacillus and Streptococcus pneumoniae causing submandibular suppurative adenitis and acute glomerulonephritis.

Acute cervical adenitis is a frequent problem in pediatrics. It is occasionally followed by acute postinfectious glomerulonephritis, which has a well-defined set of clinical and histological manifestations. We present two rare cases of acute postinfectious glomerulonephritis, one associated with Streptococcus pneumoniae and the second with cat-scratch disease. Cultures of material from the lymph nodes yielded S. pneumoniae type 15 in case 1. A pleomorphic gram-negative micro-organism, identified by silver stain as cat-scratch bacillus, was found in case 2.

Chancroid in El Salvador. Increasing incidence, clinical features, and therapeutics.

Ninety-five cases of chancroid were studied during a 6-month period in a dermatologic service in San Salvador; 88 (92.6%) were men and 7 (7.4%) were women, with a ratio of 12.5:1. The minimum age was 13 years and the maximum 46, with an average of 21 years. In most of the cases (81.05%), the incubation period varied from 1 to 7 days. Very painful adenopathies, enough to make walking difficult, were a striking feature in 69 cases (72.6%). Treatment was curative in all cases, except two, who received treatment with co-trifamole (sulfatrifamole 400 mg/trimethoprim 80 mg). In two cases in which it

Nontropical chyluria secondary to massive mesenteric adenitis. Case report with metabolic and immunologic studies.

This report describes metabolic and immunologic studies in a 17-year-old white man with nontropical chyluria secondary to massive mesenteric adenitis. Numerous red cells and mature lymphocytes were observed in the urine, and cystoscopic examination demonstrated chyle emanating from both ureteral orifices. Retrograde studies demonstrated pyelolymphatic backflow, and lymphangiography revealed prominent lymphaticocaliceal communications. Twenty-four-hour urinary studies showed proteinuria and lipiduria, which decreased after lymphangiography and a low-fat diet. Skin tests for delayed hypersensiti

The radiographic evaluation of infants with stridor.

In the elective evaluation of infant stridor, inspiratory plain radiographs of the neck and chest are routinely obtained with fluoroscopy and a barium swallow when indicated. Several factors, including patient positioning, roentgenographic technique, and the phase of respiration, may significantly alter the appearance of the airway, reducing the diagnostic accuracy of this modality and leading to misinterpretation of the pathologic changes.
