[Carbon/carbon implants in oral and maxillofacial surgery -- part 1].

UNLABELLED: Over the past 20-30 years various carbon implant materials have become more interesting, because they are well accepted by the biological environment. The traditional carbon-based polymers give rise to many complications. The polymer complication may be eliminated through carbon fibres bound by pyrocarbon (carbon/carbon). AIM: The aim of this study is to present the long-term results of carbon/carbon implants. METHODS: Mandibular reconstruction was performed with pure (99.99%) carbon implants in 16 patients. Predominantly tumorous cases were included (10 malignant tumors, 4 large…

Primary Malignant Melanoma of the Mandible: A Diagnostic Dilemma and Surgical Management of a Rare Entity.

Oral malignant melanoma (OMM) is a rare but highly aggressive malignancy that develops in the mucosal lining of the oral cavity. Of all primary melanoma cases, those arising from the oral cavity are extremely uncommon, and among these, involvement of the mandible as the primary site is even rarer. A 42-year-old woman presented with a bluish pigmented lesion over the left mandibular gingiva, associated with mild pain and intermittent bleeding from the lesion. Clinical examination revealed a melanocytic lesion involving the gingiva. Imaging studies, including contrast-enhanced computed tomograph

Morphological changes in the upper airway following mandibular distraction osteogenesis in craniofacial microsomia patients with obstructive sleep apnoea.

This retrospective study aimed to determine the morphology of the upper airway of craniofacial microsomia (CFM) patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) both pre- and post-mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO), and to compare differences in airway changes according to the therapeutic efficacy for OSA. The CFM patients with OSA were divided into 'effective' and 'ineffective' groups based on the therapeutic efficacy of MDO for OSA. Pre- and post-MDO craniofacial CT data were imported into Mimics software for three-dimensional upper airway reconstruction, which was further segmented into

Solitary Myocardial Metastasis from Locoregionally Controlled Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Oral Cavity.

We present the case of a 62-year-old male originally diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the right retromolar trigone, Stage cT2N2bM0. He was treated radically with a pharyngotomy and segmental mandibular resection, right selective neck nodal dissection, and then reconstruction with a free fibular flap. The pathologic stage was T4aN1. He then received adjuvant chemoradiation therapy with a radiation dose of 6,000 cGy in 30 fractions, along with cisplatin, 100 mg/m(2) every three weeks. Good local control was repeatedly documented for two years. He then presented with shortness of b

Three-dimensional visualization of temporomandibular joint after occlusal changes using facial scanning techniques combined with single cone beam computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: Current cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) methods cannot demonstrate the temporomandibular joint fossa-condyle relationship in real time. This study aimed to print a simple guide plate with marker points and capture a single CBCT scan based on positional changes of the marker points to align the maxilla and mandible positions. METHODS: The three groups were divided into the intercuspal position, 5 mm unilateral elevation, and 10 mm bilateral elevation to simulate different patient occlusal situations after treatment. The maxillary and mandibular positions were aligned according

Microsurgical repair of the peripheral trigeminal nerve after mandibular sagittal split ramus osteotomy.

PURPOSE: Injuries to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and lingual nerves (LNs) have long been known complications of the mandibular sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO). Most postoperative paresthesias resolve without treatment. However, microsurgical exploration of the nerve may be indicated in cases of significant persistent sensory dysfunction associated with observed or suspected localized IAN or LN injury. We report the demographics and outcome of microsurgical exploration and repair of peripheral branches of the trigeminal nerve injured because of the SSRO. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A re

Extracapsular Condylar Fractures Treated Conservatively in Children: Mechanism of Bone Remodelling.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to reveal the reconstruction process in pediatric patients with extracapsular condylar fractures after conservative treatment. We clarify that the "upright" position (or "recontouring" or favorable prognosis) of condyles is not a result of the anatomical reduction of the deviated condylar processes but originates from the remodeling of the skeleton. We also explore the related mechanism. METHODS: The sample consisted of 27 pediatric patients aged less than 12 years who presented with extracapsular condylar fractures and were treated conservatively within an 8-year p

A Slicer-Independent Framework for Measuring G-Code Accuracy in Medical 3D Printing.

In medical 3D printing, accuracy is critical for fabricating patient-specific implants and anatomical models. Although printer performance has been widely examined, the influence of slicing software on geometric fidelity is less frequently quantified. The slicing step, which converts STL files into printer-readable G-code, may introduce deviations that affect the final printed object. To quantify slicer-induced G-code deviations by comparing G-code-derived geometries with their reference STL modelsTwenty mandibular models were processed using five slicers (PrusaSlicer (version 2.9.1.), Cura (v

Risk factors for CBCT-defined condylar cortical blurring and regional osseous changes in temporomandibular disorders.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are commonly accompanied by adaptive or degenerative osseous alterations of the mandibular condyle, and parafunctional oral behaviors may contribute to abnormal joint loading. This retrospective cross-sectional study investigated the association between self-reported parafunctional activities and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-defined condylar remodeling patterns in adults with TMD. Consecutive patients diagnosed according to the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) between June 2023 and June 2024 were reviewed, and 102 individual

Integrating mandibular evidence to assess morphological variation of the Australopithecus afarensis maxilla.

Geometric morphometric analyses are used to explore variation of maxillary dental arcades of Australopithecus afarensis, expanding on the work of Hanegraef and Spoor, 2025 (Morphological variation of the Australopithecus afarensis maxilla. Journal of Human Evolution, 201, 103651) by integrating evidence from a large sample of virtually reconstructed mandibles. Size and shape of maxillary dental arcades can be predicted accurately from mandibular landmarks based on strong covariation between occluding upper and lower dentitions, and a novel method was developed to correct for reduced shape vari
