Epidemiology of sheep infection by Oestrus ovis in Algeria.

313 sheep were examined in 1996 to assess the importance and seasonal evolution of Oestrus ovis infection in the Algerian region of El-Tarf. Prevalence was found to be 67.4%. The larval burden was 18 larvae by infected sheep. The prevalence was higher in older sheep than in lambs; intensity was similar. The different larval stages were found all along the year in sheep with prevalence ranging from 33.1 to 80.5% for L1, 9.7 to 43.9% for L2 and 8.4 to 23.0% for L3. The sheep were the least infected in winter (prevalence from 35.7 to 44% and intensity seven to ten larvae per sheep). The highest i

Case report: ophthalmomyiasis externa in Dallas County, Texas.

Ophthalmomyiasis externa is an uncommon condition in North America. If not recognized and managed accordingly, it can be complicated by the potentially fatal condition ophthalmomyiasis interna. Ophthalmomyiasis externa is mainly caused by the sheep bot fly Oestrus ovis; thus, it is more common in farming communities. We report a case of ophthalmomyiasis externa in a young woman from Dallas County, Texas, who had no known history of contact with farm animals.

Postmortem insect activity may mimic perimortem sexual assault clothing patterns.

Determination of perimortem sexual assault can be confounded in homicide cases in which only badly decomposed or skeletal remains are recovered. One indicator of assault is a characteristic pattern of clothing disarray, including tearing, removal, or displacement of clothing. Preliminary findings from two studies of clothed pig carrion of approximate human size (59 to 162 kg) reveal that postmortem insect activity, particularly maggot masses, and natural decompositional changes such as bloating can produce changes to clothing which mirror those seen in cases of sexual assault.

Use of a monoclonal antibody to ovine IgE for fly strike studies in sheep.

A new monoclonal raised against sheep IgE was used to examine sera and wound exudates from sheep which had been struck by Lucilia cuprina in the field. The antibody was also used to detect the presence of IgE in sera and skin sections from sheep which had been artificially infected with fly larvae 3 times. Neither total, nor L. cuprina specific circulating IgE could be detected in serum or wound exudates from struck sheep. Cell bound IgE was, however, identified by the monoclonal in skin sections from struck sheep and from a control sheep which had not been struck. No difference in the number

[The biological aspects of botfly invasions in reindeer].

Field and laboratory studies established the development time of all the phases of Oedemagena tarandi and Cephenemyia trompe in different climatic zones of their habitat. The phenological and ecological features of O. tarandi and C. trompe in the aforesaid zones were identified which are the basis for scientifically grounded prophylactic measures. Data on potential and actual fecundity make it possible to calculate their reproduction potential and to forecast the invasion intensity of the reindeer in the next season.

Effects of Protocalliphora braueri (Diptera: Calliphoridae) parasitism and inclement weather on nestling sage thrashers.

Infection with blow fly larvae (Protocalliphora braueri) had no effect on sage thrasher (Oreoscoptes montanus) nestling weight or size at fledging nor on mean fledging age. However, the combination of cold, wet weather and parasite infection did significantly reduce nestling survival and the percent young fledged.

[Lucilia sericata infestation of the skin openings for the bone traction device in lengthening of the tibia: apropos of a case].

Fly larvae are responsible for animal disease well known by veterinarians. However, their finding in humans in nontropical countries is a rarity. Recently, we have found several larvae of Lucilia sericata in an achondroplastic child during the phase of lengthening of both tibiae with osteotax. We think that the myasis diagnosed in our patient is the first such case reported in the literature. For the time being, it should be considered a fortuitous finding and not as a complication of surgery.

Intraocular infestation by the reindeer warble fly larva: an unusual indication for acute vitrectomy.

A case of ophthalmomyiasis interna posterior (OIP) caused by the larva of the Reindeer warble fly is reported. The larva was initially found intraretinally in the inferior parts of the fundus. From this position it moved into the macula lutea within two days, causing decreased visual acuity. Acute vitrectomy was performed and the larva was removed through a retinotomy. About two months afterwards a small retinal detachment appeared near the ora serrata, where the larva had entered the eye. The retina was reattached with a scleral buckling procedure. The patient regained most of his vision post…

Parasites of the stomach in donkeys of the highveld of Zimbabwe.

Fourteen donkeys from a communal area of the Zimbabwean highveld were examined for stomach parasites during July and November of 1986 and January and April of 1987. All 14 animals were infected. Habronema muscae occurred in 12, Draschia megastoma in 11, H. majus in 9, Trichostrongylus axei in 9, Gasterophilus intestinalis in 14 and G. nasalis in 1 donkey. The lowest level of infection was in January for the helminths and in April for Gasterophilus larvae. The peak burdens of parasites were in July for Habronema spp. and in November for D. megastoma and Gasterophilus larvae. Infections with spi

The effects of diarrhoea, tail length and sex on the incidence of breech strike in modified mulesed Merino sheep.

Merino sheep were treated with purgative to induce scouring and the effects of tail length and sex on the incidence and origin of breech strike were examined. In sheep treated with the modified Mules operation, those with tails docked very short were strongly predisposed to tail strike, and to a lesser extent, crutch strike. Tails docked level with, or just below, the tip of the vulva in ewes, and at the equivalent length in wethers, were struck far less frequently. Within each tail length group, wethers tended to be more susceptible than ewes. L. cuprina was the principal species of fly invol
