BACKGROUND: Keratinocyte growth factor-1 (KGF-1) is the seventh member of the fibroblast growth factor family. KGF-1 is produced by mesenchymal cells such as fibroblasts and upregulated in a variety of hyperplastic tissues. Currently, there is limited information about the regulation of KGF-1 expression in areca quid-associated oral submucous fibrosis (OSF). The aim of the study was to compare KGF-1 expression in normal human buccal mucosa and OSF specimens and further to explore the potential mechanism that may lead to induce KGF-1 expression.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is an epidemic in the USA. Many disorders are associated with obesity including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, the prevalence of GERD and esophageal motility disorders in the morbidly obese population is unclear.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing awareness of peanut allergy, little is known of its prevalence. We report on a two-stage interview survey conducted in Great Britain.
METHODS: A total of 16434 adults (aged 15+ years) reported their own allergies and atopies and named cohabitants with peanut allergy (stage 1). Follow-up interviews were conducted with identified sufferers from peanut allergy (stage 2).

17 broilers received a wheat-soya bean meal-pea nut ration containing an excess of 15N atom% (6.54%). The birds were slaughtered 3, 6, 12, 36, 60 and 108 hours after the last 15N'-intake. Up to 12 hrs after slaughtering the contents of the crop and the stomachs were found to contain a higher excess of 15N atom% than the food. The contents of the small intestine at that time contained only 1/4 of the 15N concentration present in the crop and the stomachs (2.7%). Later on the excess of 15N atom% decreased to 1.7%, 1.4% and 0.8% and was 4 times as high as that found in the crop and the stomach. H
