Magnitude of the object recognition deficit associated with perirhinal cortex damage in rats: Effects of varying the lesion extent and the duration of the sample period.

The present study examines 2 factors that might moderate the object-recognition deficit seen after perirhinal cortex damage. Object recognition by normal rats was improved by extending (from 4 to 8 min) the sample period during which an object was first explored. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between time spent in close exploration of the sample object and degree of successful novelty discrimination. In contrast, rats with perirhinal cortex lesions failed to benefit from increased close exploration and did not discriminate the novel object after even the longest sam

Priming for letters and pseudoletters in mid-fusiform cortex: examining letter selectivity and case invariance.

A large body of research indicates a critical role for the left mid-fusiform cortex in reading, however, the extent to which this area is dedicated exclusively to the processing of words and letters has been debated. Two questions regarding left mid-fusiform function are critical to this debate: (1) Are letters stored preferentially compared to visually equivalent non-letters (letter selectivity)? (2) Are letter representations abstract with respect to changes in letter case (e.g., A/a; case invariance)? The present study addressed these questions by comparing priming for letters and pseudolet

Go-no-go performance in pathological gamblers.

Previous neuropsychological studies demonstrated various deficits of impulse control in pathological gamblers (PGs). However, there are limited data available on response-inhibition impairment among PGs. The present study attempted to assess response inhibition in untreated PGs (N=83), in comparison with normal subjects (N=84). Go/no-go and target-detection conditions of a computerized task were used as a measure of response-inhibition ability. A repeated measures analysis of covariance (ANCOVA-RM) was used with response time, variability of response time, and number of false alarms and misses

Aging preserves the ability to perceive 3D object shape from static but not deforming boundary contours.

A single experiment investigated how younger (aged 18-32 years) and older (aged 62-82 years) observers perceive 3D object shape from deforming and static boundary contours. On any given trial, observers were shown two smoothly-curved objects, similar to water-smoothed granite rocks, and were required to judge whether they possessed the "same" or "different" shape. The objects presented during the "different" trials produced differently-shaped boundary contours. The objects presented during the "same" trials also produced different boundary contours, because one of the objects was always rotate

Dissociative disturbance in Hangul-Hanja reading after a left posterior occipital lesion.

Since the Korean language has two distinct writing systems, phonogram (Hangul) and ideogram (Hanja: Chinese characters), alexia can present with dissociative disturbances in reading between the two systems. A 74-year-old right-handed man presented with a prominent reading impairment in Hangul with agraphia of both Hangul and Hanja after a left posterior occipital- parietal lesion. He could not recognize single syllable words and nonwords in Hangul, and visual errors were predominant in both Hanja reading and the Korean Boston Naming Test. In addition, he had difficulties in visuoperceptual tes

Predictors of word-level literacy amongst Grade 3 children in five diverse languages.

Groups of Grade 3 children were tested on measures of word-level literacy and undertook tasks that required the ability to associate sounds with letter sequences and that involved visual, auditory and phonological-processing skills. These groups came from different language backgrounds in which the language of instruction was Arabic, Chinese, English, Hungarian or Portuguese. Similar measures were used across the groups, with tests being adapted to be appropriate for the language of the children. Findings indicated that measures of decoding and phonological-processing skills were good predicto

The different representational frameworks underpinning abstract and concrete knowledge: evidence from odd-one-out judgements.

Recent evidence from neuropsychological investigations of individuals with global aphasia and deep or deep-phonological dyslexia suggests that abstract and concrete concepts are underpinned by qualitatively different representational frameworks. Abstract words are represented primarily by their association to other words, whilst concrete words are represented primarily by their taxonomic similarity to one another. In the current study, we present the first evidence for this association/similarity distinction to be gathered from healthy research participants. Using a semantic odd-one-out task,

Open angle glaucoma effects on preattentive visual search efficiency for flicker, motion displacement and orientation pop-out tasks.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Preattentive visual search (PAVS) describes rapid and efficient retinal and neural processing capable of immediate target detection in the visual field. Damage to the nerve fibre layer or visual pathway might reduce the efficiency with which the visual system performs such analysis. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that patients with glaucoma are impaired on parallel search tasks, and that this would serve to distinguish glaucoma in early cases. METHODS: Three groups of observers (glaucoma patients, suspect and normal individuals) were examined, using compu

Event related potentials and the perception of intensity in facial expressions.

It is well known from everyday experience, that facial expressions of emotions can very much vary in intensity, e.g. ranging from mild anger to rage, or from uneasiness and mild fear to angst and panic. However, the effect of different intensities of facial expressions of emotion on event related potentials has yet not been studied. We therefore investigated 16 healthy participants with a gender decision task to male and female faces displaying angry, disgusted and fearful facial expressions varying in intensity (50%, 100%, 150%). Analysis of ERP data showed a significant increase in amplitude

Imaging visual recognition memory network by PET in the baboon: perirhinal cortex heterogeneity and plasticity after perirhinal lesion.

We recently mapped the visual recognition memory network in the behaving baboon using a positron emission tomography (PET) activation paradigm with 18F-fluoro-deoxyglucose during a visual delayed matching-to-sample task. This study confirmed the key role of the perirhinal cortex and documented an unexpected left-sided advantage. Specific contribution of each subdivision of the perirhinal cortex has, however, never been investigated. Furthermore, although alteration to the perirhinal cortex has been implicated in several brain disorders, putative plasticity within the entire brain network after

The BOLD fMRI refractory effect is specific to stimulus attributes: evidence from a visual motion paradigm.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have demonstrated that the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) hemodynamic response (HDR) to a stimulus is reduced by the previous presentation of a similar stimulus. We investigated the dependence of this refractory effect upon stimulus characteristics using a novel adaptation paradigm while scanning subjects using fMRI at 4 T. The stimuli were composed of horizontal stripes that scrolled up, scrolled down, or remained static, randomly presented for 1-s duration with stimulus-onset asynchronies (SOAs) of 2-7 s. We identified regions of

Effects of structural similarity on neural substrates for object recognition.

Human occipitotemporal cortex (OTC) is critically involved in object recognition, but the functional organization of this brain region is controversial. In the present study, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal changes were recorded in humans during an animal-matching task that parametrically varied degree of structural (i.e., shape) similarity among the items. fMRI signal in the mid- to anterior-fusiform gyrus increased as animals overlapped more in terms of structure and as reaction time increased. In contrast, relatively more posterior aspects of the fusiform gyrus and infer

Maternal representations of the infant: associations with infant response to the still face.

Mothers' representations of their infants may influence early development of emotional self-regulation. This study examined the associations between characteristics of mothers' (N = 100) narratives about their 7-month-old infants, maternal depression, and their infants' affect regulation during the Still Face procedure. Findings showed that (1) mothers' representations were linked with individual differences in their infants' behavior across the Still Face procedure, (2) the association between mothers' representations and their infants' behavior was mediated by parenting behavior, and (3) mot

Visual discrimination learning impairments produced by combined transections of the anterior temporal stem, amygdala and fornix in marmoset monkeys.

Marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) with bilateral transections of the anterior temporal stem, amygdala and fornix were unable to relearn a 2-choice object discrimination first learnt prior to surgery, and were very severely impaired at relearning a concurrent object discrimination task which they had learnt and relearnt prior to surgery, indicating that they had a dense retrograde amnesia. They also had difficulty learning new visual object discriminations but were only mildly impaired on spatial learning. When tested on new learning of concurrent discriminations 8 to 10 weeks after surgery

Prolonged reaction time to a verbal working memory task predicts increased power of posterior parietal cortical activation.

We used multislice functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the association between behavioral and neurophysiological measures of working memory task performance in 20 right-handed male healthy volunteers. Images were acquired over a 5-min period at 1.5 Tesla. We used a periodic design, alternating 30-s blocks of the "n-back" working memory task with 30-s blocks of a sensorimotor control task to activate verbal working memory systems. The power of functional response to the task was estimated by sinusoidal regression at each voxel. The relationship between power of fMRI resp

Simultaneous and delayed matching to sample in gesture users and speakers with mental retardation.

Sixty-eight participants with severe mental retardation participated in a study of representational matching to sample. Participants were asked to match objects to identical objects, line drawings, miniature objects (icons), pantomimes, and spoken names. Participants who were successful in these matching tasks also experienced delayed matching tasks. Participants differed in their expressive communication and comparisons were made between symbolic (speaking) individuals, distal gesture users, and contact gesture users. Contact gesture users were significantly worse on identical matching to sam

Perceptual and attentional asymmetries in schizophrenia: further evidence for a left hemisphere deficit.

Increasing evidence suggests the presence of a lateralizing attentional deficit in schizophrenia. In the present study, 23 unmedicated patients with schizophrenia (mean age = 32.1 years) and 14 age- and sex-matched normal subjects were studied with the Global/Local Task to provide converging evidence for the presence of a left-hemisphere-associated attentional deficit in schizophrenia. This task is sensitive to the integrity of mechanisms involved in discriminating local and global elements of stimuli. Previous research has linked the discrimination of local targets to left hemispheric process

From letters to words: procedures for word recognition in letter-by-letter reading.

There are two alternative interpretations of how word recognition is accomplished in letter-by-letter reading. One postulates that it relies on the spelling system operating "in reverse," whereas the other claims that it is mediated by the reading system. Because of the close association between patterns of reading and spelling in previously reported cases of letter-by-letter reading, both hypotheses may be considered equally plausible. We now report a patient with letter-by-letter reading who demonstrated a striking dissociation between reading and spelling. Our observations in this patient a

Stimulus class formation and concept learning: establishment of within- and between-set generalization and transitive relationships via conditional discrimination procedures.

Three students with moderate mental retardation were taught a complex stimulus class with a two-choice conditional discrimination procedure applied across eight 10-member stimulus sets. Each set was composed of five age-appropriate and five age-inappropriate examples of clothing, accessories, and leisure items (e.g., a Walkman radio). Discrimination training was programmed serially across each set, and generalization probes were conducted concurrently among all sets. Generalization probes consisted of unreinforced conditional matching trials with comparison items being drawn from (a) the set u

Priming and semantic memory loss in Alzheimer's disease.

Semantic memory (SM) was investigated in six patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) by on-line measurement of semantic priming in a lexical decision task, and off-line tests of comprehension. Detailed assessment was carried out on naming, name comprehension, and probes of semantic knowledge with a battery of 150 items. The patients performed normally on perceptual tests and displayed an item-specific loss of knowledge on the semantic tests. In a primed lexical decision task, greater semantic priming was found relative to age-matched normals. The priming was substantially greater for i
