OBJECTIVES: Fetal hemoglobin (HbF) induction involves NO-cGMP signaling pathways. L-arginine, an NO precursor, and the phosphodiesterase (PDE) 5 inhibitor sildenafil, which potentiates cGMP, were studied in adults with sickle cell disease (SCD) who were stably on HU.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this report is to evaluate the efficacy of and complications observed after laparoscopic splenic procedures in children.
METHODS: Review of a prospective database at a single institution (1995-2006) identified 231 children (129 boys; 102 girls; average age 7.69 years) undergoing laparoscopic splenic procedures.

Authors summarise the two-decade experience of their department in severe tissue necrosis of penis and scrotum. Presented cases represent a shared field of urology with dermatology, infectology, nephrology and andrology. Tissue necrosis extended to different depth of the penis, from superficial skin and subcutaneous tissues, fascias to the entire organ. Underlying diseases are acute and chronic inflammations, metabolic diseases, vascular lesions. Diagnostic difficulties and therapeutic choices, both conservative and operative, are discussed.

HUS was recently described following scorpion sting. We report 2 cases of HUS in the intensive care unit of a university hospital. Two children aged respectively 10 months and 1 year were admitted in the ICU after severe scorpion envenomation (with coma and pulmonary oedema) having required dobutamine and mechanical ventilation. Evolution was marked with acute anaemia without bleeding requiring blood transfusion, acute renal failure, low platelets and signs of haemolysis.
