This study analyzed the relationship between field dependence-independence and complex motor skills. According to the requirements of each sporting activity, subjects' motor system can be mainly controlled through exteroceptive or proprioceptive information. Sport performances require the athlete to disembed himself, other players, or the ball from the background, and decision-making appears to require cognitive restructuring. 26 athletes (13 men and 13 women) involved in acrobatic sports (gymnastics, trampoline, half-pipe snowboard, synchronized 3-m springboard, acrobatic rock, skateboard, an

Five young Shiloh Shepherd Dogs (4 males and 1 female) related by a common sire were studied because of progressive pelvic limb weakness and incoordination. All dogs had a spastic paraparesis and pelvic limb ataxia consistent with an upper motor neuron and general proprioceptive lesion between spinal cord segments T3 and L3. Proliferative lesions involving one or more of the articular processes from the 11th thoracic vertebrae to the 2nd lumbar vertebra were observed on radiographs of the thoracolumbar vertebrae. Dorsal compression of the spinal cord was identified during imaging studies at th

Although taping techniques are commonly used in addition to exercise programmes in the rehabilitation of shoulder instability and secondary subacromial or internal impingement, few studies exist on the effect of taping on the muscle activity of the scapular rotators. The purpose of our study was to examine the influence of one particular tape on muscular activity in scapular muscles. Twenty healthy shoulders were examined with surface EMG recordings on the three parts of trapezius and serratus anterior muscle during dynamic full range of motion abduction and forward flexion. The movement direc

BACKGROUND: The helmet-mounted display (HMD) research program at the Flight Research Laboratory of the National Research Council of Canada examined the effects of HMD camera platform dynamics on pilot workload. Many currently fielded visually coupled HMD systems do not reproduce head movements in the roll axis which can lead to the presentation of visual information that is not consistent with vestibular and proprioceptive information.
HYPOTHESIS: Our hypothesis was that this sensory conflict can induce motion sickness and increase pilot workload.
METHODS: To examine this premise, three pilo

Advancements in the understanding of anatomy, kinematics, and physiology should improve future treatment of anterior cruciate ligament injured knees. The ultimate goal of full restoration of an anterior cruciate ligament injured knee to preinjury status, may be possible in the distant future through genetic manipulation inducing regeneration of tissues. In the midterm future, resorbable stents with incorporated bioactive growth factors have the potential of inducing normal anterior cruciate ligament anatomy without the need for detrimental harvesting of the patient's tissues, or risk of microb

Examination of the vertebrobasilar system until a short time ago was possible only by invasive and therefore potentially harmful techniques. The results of these studies were also contradictory. The objective of the present study was to determine how blood flow velocity differed in the vertebral arteries during head rotation in normal subjects. The origin of cervical vertigo essentially involves three components that are difficult to distinguish. There are the sensory proprioceptive, vascular and sympathicotonic components. Use of transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) has now made it possible

As dizziness can be caused by so many different pathophysiological mechanisms, it is crucial to determine the type of dizziness before proceeding with the diagnostic evaluation. Vertigo, defined as an illusion of movement, is an important subtype of dizziness that indicates a lesion somewhere within the vestibular system. Probably the most useful feature for differentiating between peripheral and central causes of vertigo is the associated symptoms. Vertigo of peripheral origin is typically associated with auditory symptoms such as hearing loss and tinnitus, while vertigo of central origin is

The peroneal reflex time to sudden ankle inversion and the postural control of 15 athletes with functionally instable ankles were compared with 15 stable controls. A trapdoor produced sudden ankle inversion. Surface electrodes recorded electromyographic activity of the peroneal muscles. Postural sway was expressed by a transverse sway value obtained during single limb stance on a force plate. Increased postural sway was found in subjects with functional instability (p less than 0.01). This is in accordance with previous studies. Functionally instable subjects also displayed an increased perone

Dystonia is mysterious and its pathophysiology is uncertain. The fundamental motor abnormality is an abnormality of muscle command signals, such that the wrong agonists may be activated for too long, there is abnormal co-contraction of agonist and antagonists, and there is excessive and misdirected action of synergists and postural fixators. The result is action dystonia. In addition, muscle spasms may occur spontaneously. The peripheral motor apparatus, the corticomotoneurone pathway, and (as far as is known) the proprioceptive feedback machinery, are all intact in primary dystonia. However,

1. An examination of the physiological properties of cells in cat lumbar dorsal horn shows that there are three horizontal laminae which correspond approximately to Rexed (1952) laminae 4, 5, and 6.2. A summary diagram (Fig. 9) suggests the relation of the laminae to each other and to afferent and descending fibres. All three laminae respond to cutaneous stimulation but only lamina 6 responds to movement. By comparing responses of cells in decerebrate and spinal preparations, it is shown that the brain stem inhibits cutaneous responses and enhances movement responses. Pyramidal tract stimulati

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, the coexistence of conventional medicine and traditional healing practices creates a complex therapeutic landscape that disproportionately affects older adults. Therapeutic scarification-cutaneous incisions performed on painful body areas-remains one of the most widespread traditional approaches to chronic pain management. Its geriatric-specific complications and functional consequences remain poorly documented. With a projected 67% increase in the population aged over 60 in Cameroon by 2030 and fewer than 15% of older adults benefiting from effective social

BACKGROUND: Injury prevention measures might reduce the impact of injury on footballers and football clubs. Increasing research has evaluated the use of exercise for injury prevention. However, research has focused on adolescent females. No high-quality systematic reviews have evaluated the efficacy of all forms of exercise on preventing injury in adult male football.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to conduct a systematic review to evaluate the efficacy of exercise in preventing injury in adult male football.

1. In this study we describe changes in neuronal responses within the primary electrosensory processing nucleus of a weakly electric fish that occur when the fish are exposed to repetitive patterns of electrosensory stimuli. Extracellular single-unit recordings show that pyramidal cells within the electrosensory lateral line lobe develop, over a time course of several minutes, an insensitivity to repetitive stimuli applied to a cell's receptive field (local stimulus). The pyramidal cell response cancellation only develops if the local stimulus is applied simultaneously with a diffuse pattern o

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) technology offers immersive and interactive experiences and is increasingly being explored for rehabilitation therapies. However, concerns about side effects such as nausea and dizziness-collectively referred to as VR sickness-are holding back clinical translation. Sensorimotor mismatches, while potentially beneficial for motor learning, may exacerbate these effects. The age groups in VR applications differ, with younger users common in gaming and older adults prevalent in rehabilitation. This study investigated whether sensorimotor mismatches in a VR-based mot

INTRODUCTION: Vibration therapy (VT) has been widely used to increase performance and rehabilitate injuries in athletes. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), caused by excessive overload after training and competitions, leads to loss of performance.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of wearable local VT on muscle soreness and athletic performance in wheelchair basketball (WCB) players.
METHOD: A non-randomized crossover design was used in this study in which thirteen elite WCB athletes (31.84 ± 12.59 years) participated. A two-week washout period was applied be

Perception of limb position and motion combines sensory information from spindles in muscles that span one joint (monoarticulars) and two joints (biarticulars). This anatomical organization should create interactions in estimating limb position. We developed two models, one with only monoarticulars and one with both monoarticulars and biarticulars, to explore how biarticulars influence estimates of arm position in hand (x, y) and joint (shoulder, elbow) coordinates. In hand coordinates, both models predicted larger medial-lateral than proximal-distal errors, although the model with both muscle

OBJECTIVE: Auditory neuropathy (AN) is a unique pattern of hearing loss with preservation of hair cell function. The condition is characterized by the presence of otoacoustic emissions (OAE) or cochlear microphonic (CM) responses with severe abnormalities of the auditory brainstem response (ABR). The vestibular branches of the VIII cranial nerve and the structures innervated by it can also be affected. However, the precise lesion sites in the vestibular system are not well characterized in patients with AN.
METHODS: The air-conducted sound (ACS) vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) a
