BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the patterns of failure and the treatment of recurrences, in a series of primary irradiated patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic larynx.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight hundred and sixty-one consecutive patients were included in this study from 1963 to 1991, out of which 74 were females and 787 males. The stages were: I 56, II 26, III 15, and IV 3%. In 847 of 861 cases (98%) the primary treatment was delivered with curative intent, and out of these 834 patients received primary radical radiotherapy.

Neonatal tracheal injury/perforation is an uncommon complication of traumatic deliveries or endotracheal intubation. We present a case of neonatal tracheal injury following delivery at term that presented with subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum before any attempt at intubation. Over a 5-year period 1,000 pulmonary endoscopic procedures (172 laryngoscopies, 828 bronchoscopies) were performed in children less than 10 years of age using flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopes, with sedation and topical anesthesia. An endoscopic diagnosis of direct relevance to the primary indication for the procedure was established in 76% of the cases; in an additional 15%, abnormalities relevant to a secondary indication were found. In 1977 we reported the successful use of endotracheal cryotherapy in the treatment of experimental tracheal strictures. This technique has now been employed in the treatment of 29 refractory airway lesions in 27 patients ranging in age from 3 months to 42 years. The technique utilizes a nitrous oxide cryoprobe measuring 3 mm in diameter and 43 cm in length. Airway reflexes are difficult to study in conscious animals because associated changes in ventilation alter intrathoracic airway dimensions. By studying an isolated segment of extrathoracic trachea, we have overcome this problem.
