BACKGROUND: People who experience incarceration are characterised by poor health profiles. Clarification of the disease burden in the prison population can inform service and policy development. We aimed to synthesise and assess the evidence regarding the epidemiology of mental and physical health conditions among people in prisons worldwide.
METHODS: In this umbrella review, five bibliographic databases (Web of Science, PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, and Global Health) were systematically searched from inception to identify meta-analyses published up to Oct 31, 2023, which examined the prevalence

The complex care that must be provided for patients with renal disease might interfere with provision of basic preventive measures in this population. Preventive health care, including infection screening and prophylaxis, vaccinations, management of blood glucose and lipid levels, and cancer screening, is important, as it might decrease acute morbidity and mortality. This Review highlights useful preventive and health maintenance strategies for patients with chronic kidney disease and those with end-stage renal disease.

BACKGROUND: Inclusion health focuses on people in extremely poor health due to poverty, marginalisation, and multimorbidity. We aimed to review morbidity and mortality data on four overlapping populations who experience considerable social exclusion: homeless populations, individuals with substance use disorders, sex workers, and imprisoned individuals.
METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for studies published between Jan 1, 2005, and Oct 1, 2015. We included only systematic reviews, meta-analyses, interventional studies

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of the recombinant human type II tumor necrosis factor receptor-antibody Fc fusion protein (rhTNFR:Fc) on cytokines and bone metabolism in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).
METHODS: This was a prospective, non-randomized, controlled and open-label study. Thirty-one patients with JIA in active state were enrolled at our hospital from December 2006 to June 2009. The mean age was 12.7 ± 2.3 years. Exclusive criteria included infection with tuberculosis and hepatitis B etc., abnormal renal or hepatic function. Study consists of two phases. Dur

BACKGROUND: Southeast Asia is undergoing an epidemiological transition with non-communicable illnesses becoming increasingly important, yet infectious diseases (tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis B, malaria) remain widely prevalent in some populations, while emerging and zoonotic diseases threaten. There are also limited population-level estimates of many important heath conditions. This restricts evidence-based decision-making for disease control and prevention priorities. Cross-sectional surveys can be efficient epidemiological tools to measure the prevalence of a wide range of diseases, but no sy

BACKGROUND/AIM: The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the contraindications, special warnings, and boxed warnings with the aim to establish a framework to create a prescription safety checklist for a class of drugs or disease indication. This study covers biologic disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) and targeted synthetic DMARDs (tsDMARDs).
METHODS: We identified contraindications, boxed warnings, and special warnings provided by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The study included b/tsDMARDs approved for treating

BACKGROUND: Commencing lifelong antiretroviral therapy (ART) immediately following HIV diagnosis (Option B+), has greatly improved maternal-infant health. Thus, large and increasing numbers of HIV-infected women are on ART during pregnancy, a situation concurrently increasing numbers of HIV-exposed-uninfected (HEU) infants. Compared to their HIV-unexposed-uninfected (HUU) counterparts, HEU infants show higher rates of adverse birth outcomes, mortality, infectious/non-communicable diseases including impaired growth and neurocognitive development. There is an urgent need to understand the impact

BACKGROUND: Cytopenias are the most common HIV-associated hematological abnormality. Cytopenias have been associated with several factors including sex, race/ethnicity, geographical location and comorbidities such as tuberculosis, hepatitis B infection, fever and oral candidiasis. Cytopenias become more prevalent as HIV progresses and are often fatal. Data from resource-limited settings about the prevalence and correlates of cytopenia are limited. Therefore we conducted this cross-sectional study to assess the prevalence and correlates of cytopenia among adult AIDS patients at initiation of HA

The same drugs are used to treat hemorrhagic rectocolitis (HRC) and Crohn's disease (CD), although the aims are very different. Aminosalicylates are highly beneficial in HRC but virtually ineffective in CD, a disease in which immunosuppressants are more useful. Aminosalicylates exert their antiinflammatory effect directly on the lesions. Various oral and rectal preparations have been developed in order to deliver the active molecule to the intestinal target segment. These drugs are now known to act by stimulating the nuclear receptor PPAR-gamma, and this knowledge should help with the developm

BACKGROUND: Though specialty pharmacies collect and report a myriad of measures to internal and external stakeholders, these data are infrequently used for evaluating specialty pharmacy performance or clinical decision-making. Establishing standardized specialty pharmacy measures could enable benchmarking, performance-based contracting, and high-cost drug utilization management while improving patient care and specialty medication management.
OBJECTIVE: To determine consensus among specialty pharmacy stakeholders on important and usable measures for specialty pharmacies managing patients with

The circulation of arboviruses in sub-Saharan African countries remains poorly documented. The associated health burden may be underestimated and masked by the significance of malaria. Here, we have investigated acute undifferentiated fevers for arboviral infections in Mali (2016-2024). To estimate the proportion of patients with arboviral infection, and in particular dengue. A retrospective (2016-2022) and a prospective (2023-2024) studies were conducted in patients from health centers and hospitals of Mali (mainly in the Bamako region) selected by health professionals. Studies included patie

BACKGROUND: Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VR-Efm) has shown a rising global trend. This study aimed to analyze the resistance patterns and risk factors of E. faecium bloodstream infections (BSIs) in hospitalized patients at a Chinese tertiary hospital in Guangzhou, to provide evidence for infection control.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study investigating the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles and clinical characteristics of 48 E. faecium isolates recovered from 48 hospitalized patients (one isolate per patient) between 1st January 2022 and 31st December 2024, with all cas

INTRODUCTION: The 13th IAS Conference on HIV Science, held in Kigali, Rwanda (13-17 July 2025), highlighted key advances in clinical research. Presentations focused on sustaining HIV treatment and prevention amid financial constraints, innovations in long-acting oral antiretrovirals, and the management of comorbidities and co-infections, particularly tuberculosis (TB) and mpox.
DISCUSSION: Significant progress was reported on long-acting oral antiretrovirals, including a weekly treatment regimen and a promising monthly option for pre-exposure prophylaxis. These strategies could expand the cur

BACKGROUND: Despite global efforts to reduce preventable childhood illness by distributing infant vaccines, immunization coverage in sub-Saharan African settings remains low. Further, timely administration of vaccines at birth-tuberculosis (Bacille Calmette-Guérin [BCG]) and polio (OPV0)-remains inconsistent. As countries such as Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) prepare to add yet another birth-dose vaccine to their immunization schedule, this study aims to improve current and future birth-dose immunization coverage by understanding the determinants of infants receiving vaccinations with
