Are soluble IL-2 receptor and IL-12p40 levels useful markers for diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy?

BACKGROUND: The differential diagnostic utilities of the levels of soluble interleukin (IL)-12p40 and the IL-2 receptor in sera and pleural effusions were evaluated in patients with exudative pleural effusions. METHODS: We enrolled a total of 120 patients with exudative pleural effusions. The clinical, radiological, and histopathological diagnoses were tuberculous pleurisy in 52, malignant pleurisy in 39, and parapneumonic effusions in 29 patients. RESULTS: We measured serum IL-12p40 and adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels in patients with tuberculous pleurisy and in a control group treated for

Endostatin levels in exudative pleural effusions.

Endostatin is an angiogenesis inhibitor that is an endogenously produced proteolytic fragment of type XVIII collagen. Although serum levels of endostatin have extensively been studied in patients with malignant diseases, endostatin in pleural effusion has not been fully evaluated. In order to determine whether endostatin is present in pleural effusion, and to determine whether endostatin levels vary in pleural effusion of different etiology, we measured levels of endostatin in 38 malignant pleural effusion due to lung cancer patients and 29 patients with non-malignant disease using an ELISA ki

Chest X-Ray Comparison Between Drug-Resistant and Drug-Sensitive Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Children.

INTRODUCTION: Chest X-ray (CXR) remains one of the tools used in diagnosing tuberculosis (TB). However, few studies about such tools exist, specifically in children in Indonesia. We aim to investigate and compare the CXR findings of children with pulmonary drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) and drug-sensitive TB (DS-TB) that could help in the evaluation and management of TB cases in children. METHODS: Retrospective analysis with cross-sectional approach was conducted in children (<18 years old) diagnosed with pulmonary DR-TB and DS-TB from January 2018 to December 2021. Documented data were collected

Clinical predictive model for identifying high-risk factors in pleurisy tuberculoma patients.

INTRODUCTION: Pleurisy tuberculoma (PTM) is a neoplastic lesion that primarily affects the pleural wall or internal organs. The majority of PTM cases are observed during the treatment of tuberculous pleural effusion(TPE), and although the precise pathogenesis remains unclear, there is a significant association between these two conditions. To identify high-risk factors for the development of PTM, we developed a clinical predictive model aimed at providing more insightful information for the development of PTM. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on patients diagnosed with PTM or TPE

Abdominopelvic tuberculosis mimicking advanced ovarian cancer and pelvic inflammatory disease: a series of 28 female cases.

OBJECTIVE: To present and discuss 28 female cases with abdominopelvic tuberculosis (TB) and abnormal CA125 levels to better distinguish this disease from advanced ovarian cancer (AOC) and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Abdominopelvic tuberculosis (APTB) is one of the extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) sites, usually misdiagnosed as AOC and PID and then has to undergo surgery. However, the treatment of APTB is totally based on medical therapy other than surgery except biopsy. This article aims to present and discuss 28 female APTB cases with abnormal CA125 levels to better distinguish this di

Multiple organ tuberculosis of lung, pleura, and peritoneum in ankylosing spondylitis during adalimumab therapy.

A case of multiple organ tuberculosis (TBc) involving lung, pleura, and peritoneum in a 39-year-old man with long-standing ankylosing spondylitis (AS) treated with adalimumab was presented. The relationship between antitumor necrosis factor-α (anti-TNF-α) therapy and TBc was also reviewed. This case illustrates that TBc can develop in multiple organs during adalimumab therapy, and thus, the awareness of serious complications of multiple organs and atypical extrapulmonary pattern of TBc during anti-TNF-α therapy needs to be increased.

Chest Tuberculosis in Children.

Chest is the commonest site of involvement by tuberculosis (TB) in children; lungs being the most frequently affected region, followed by nodes, pleura and chest wall. It is difficult to diagnose TB in children due to lack of overt symptoms and difficulty in obtaining samples for microbiological confirmation. Hence various imaging modalities play an important role in diagnostic algorithm as well as in follow-up after treatment. Standardization of chest radiograph reporting in context of clinically suspected TB is the need of the hour so as to suggest a proper diagnosis and avoid over-diagnosis

Clinical Relevance of Trace-Positive Results in Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra for Tuberculosis Diagnosis in a High-Burden Setting: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: The introduction of the "trace" category in the Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra assay has significantly improved the sensitivity of molecular tuberculosis diagnostics. While it enhances sensitivity, especially in paucibacillary and extrapulmonary cases, its specificity remains debatable, making its interpretation outside select populations a topic of clinical uncertainty. Objectives: This study evaluates the diagnostic and clinical significance of trace-positive results obtained with the Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra assay in the context of a high-incidence TB setting, examining their association with c
