Purpose of the study was to develop techniques of controlled myorelaxation during surgeries in patients with aldosteroma. 46 patients were involved in the study. CASE REPORT: The authors report on a 51-year-old patient with transient pareses, myalgias, and a massive creatine kinase elevation which had led to an intensive neurological work-up by the general practitioner. Despite refractory hypertension, primary aldosteronism was not excluded. At the authors' clinic, the patient was diagnosed to have Conn's syndrome. Aldosterone-producing adenomas (APAs) demonstrate exquisite sensitivity to endogenous ACTH. We previously showed an ACTH receptor overexpression in APAs compared with the other adrenal tumors. BACKGROUND: The effect of steroids against inflammatory mediators is well known, but its benefit and adverse effect on the postoperative clinical course are uncertain after esophageal resection for carcinoma.
METHODS: Forty-three cases undergoing esophageal resection for carcinoma were studied retrospectively. Twenty-six cases, given corticosteroids during operation or first postoperative day, were classified as the steroid group, and the other 17 cases were defined as the control group. A case of a 49-year-old man suffering from bilateral adrenocortical carcinoma with local and secondary rapid progression is reported. The results of adrenocortical scintigraphy (NP 59) and histological findings allowed the diagnosis. This case report and a literature review showed the importance of using adrenocortical scintigraphy as a complementary imaging procedure of CT or MR images.

A serum steroid profile was determined in 11 patients with adrenocortical carcinoma, 5 with adrenocortical adenoma and 10 healthy controls. Patients with Cushing's syndrome may develop spinal epidural lipomatosis, an abnormal accumulation of fat in the spinal epidural space. This accumulation of fat may cause compression of the spinal cord or cauda equina with resulting neurological deficit. Two cases of symptomatic spinal lipomatosis are reported in cardiac transplant patients receiving chronic corticosteroid treatment. The data from 44 patients with documented glioblastoma who received 1.5 g/m2 of misonidazole twice weekly in conjunction with whole brain radiotherapy (total dose 6000 rad) was analyzed for factors associated with the development of peripheral neuropathy.
