BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection predominantly affects the respiratory tract, although the other organs may also be involved. Previous studies compared the clinical features of patients with M. pneumonia pneumonia to other pathogens and these studies were predominantly adult case series rather than involving children. The objectives of the present study were to compare the clinical features, laboratory, and radiographic findings in children seropositive for M. pneumoniae infection with children tested for suspected M. pneumoniae infection who were seronegative.

Evidence for the involvement of viruses, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Chlamydia spp. was studied by the complement fixation test in paired sera from 310 young adults (297 men and 13 women) with acute maxillary sinusitis. The diagnosis of acute sinusitis was confirmed by radiography and sinus puncture. Elevated antibody titres were found in 102 patients (33%). The sensitivity and specificity of the complement fixation (CF) test for the diagnosis of Babesia infections in equines was assessed, using the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test as a reference. Specific IgM class antibody production was studied in different groups of patients with characterized cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections using a radioimmunoassay (RIA). In pregnant women, IgM antibodies were detected only following primary infection and generally persisted less than 4 months. Intramuscular sensitization of hamsters with several forms of respiratory syncytial virus (RSv) caused proliferation of lung epithelium. In contrast, intranasal injection of live virus rarely resulted in this phenomenon. A correlation existed between proliferation of lung epithelium and presence of complement-fixing antibody, but not between lung disease and delayed skin reactions. Complement-fixing antibody to RSv was found to be independent of the influence of the thymus.

Within a Danish practice area a serological examination was made of 268 breeding animals in 25 conventional sow herds with a view to screening for herd infection with haemophilus pleuropneumoniae. Laboratory-acquired infections encountered between 1963 and 1977 among personnel of the Virus Research Laboratory, Ibadan, Nigeria, are reported. Two cases of chikungunya infection occurred and one each with Dugbe, Wesselsbron, and dengue viruses. In each case, virus was isolated or development of antibody demonstrated. Among virus and two each to chikungunya and Rift Valley fever viruses, without experiencing any clinically recognized disease.

An outbreak of toxoplasmosis in one household is described. It demonstrates the potential for a common source infection with Toxoplasma gondii to cause multiple cases. A study was undertaken in patients with leprosy to assess the contribution of cell-mediated immunity to the host response to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. Sixteen of 72 patients (22%) with lepromatous leprosy, with impaired cellular immunity, had anti-EBV titers of 1,640 or higher. Only 4 of 49 patients (8%) with tuberculoid leprosy, with intact cell-mediated immunity, attained the level of 1:640.
