INTRODUCTION: We sought to compare the results of pulmonary vein (PV) ablation using the high-density Mesh Ablator catheter (MESH) versus the cryoballoon (CRYO).

OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy of cervical screening with visual inspection and cytology testing, and the cure rate of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) after treatment, in a rural population in North India.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study evaluated the detection rates of CIN 2 and CIN 3 lesions by cytology testing and by visual inspection of the cervix following the application of 5% acetic acid (VIA) or Lugol's iodine (VILI). It also evaluated the cure rates following treatment of CIN.
RESULTS: Of 5050 women approached in 17 villages, 3000 (59.4%) participated (range, 41%-91%).

It has been suggested that neuroimmunologic mechanisms may be involved in the development and maintenance of neuropathic pain. To further address this concept, the immunoreactive spinal expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-6 (IL-6), was determined in the mononeuropathy model in the rat, sciatic cryoneurolysis (SCN). We analyzed 133 consecutive cases of primary retinal detachment treated by pneumatic retinopexy (PR). The postoperative follow-up period was at least 6 months (mean, 16.7 months; maximum, 36 months). In all, 97 cases (72.9%) were successfully treated by a single PR. In 19 cases (14.3%) primary reattachment was not achieved. In another 17 cases (12.8%) redetachment occurred. Redetachment was never observed later than 6 months following PR. It was caused by missed or new retinal tears in 8 eyes (6.0%) and by proliferative vitreoretinopathy in 7 eyes (5.3%). Cryoblockade of the peripheral nerve affected by trigeminal neuralgia is an established technique for treatment. Freezing the inferior dental nerve using C-arm image-intensification control, and a nerve stimulator to guide the slim Spembly Lloyd probe, offers an additional technique for treatment of a small number of patients with trigeminal neuralgia. This paper reports the results of 31 cryoblockades of the inferior dental nerve in 11 patients.

There are conflicting reports on the value of cyclocryotherapy in the management of glaucoma. This retrospective study was carried out to assess the efficacy and complication rate of this procedure. The case notes of all patients undergoing cyclocryotherapy at a single centre over a 10-year period were reviewed. Case records were available for 68 eyes of 64 people. Eighteen patients with supraventricular tachycardia refractory to medical therapy underwent preoperative electrophysiological study and subsequent operation. Two hundred forty-one eyes with a "limited retinal detachment" were treated between 1967 and 1983 by transconjunctival retinocryopexy without scleral buckling. Follow-up ranged from 6 months to 10 years (mean, of 34 months). Anatomic reattachment was accomplished with retinocryopexy alone in 95% (228 eyes) of cases. Trauma to the nail unit is one of the most common causes of onychodystrophy and may be acute (a single overwhelming injury) or chronic (repeated minor injury). Immediate effects of acute trauma include splinter hemorrhages, subungual hematomas, and nail shedding. Delayed deformities include splits and ridges, pterygium, hook nails, pigment bands, and ectopic nail. In 1977 we reported the successful use of endotracheal cryotherapy in the treatment of experimental tracheal strictures. This technique has now been employed in the treatment of 29 refractory airway lesions in 27 patients ranging in age from 3 months to 42 years. An overview of the dry eye syndrome and its medical and surgical management has been presented.
