Zoonotic hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is an emerging cause of acute viral hepatitis in developed countries. Known reservoirs of zoonotic genotype 3 (HEV-3) are mainly pigs and wild boar, and to a lesser extent rabbits and deer. Rabbit hepatitis E virus (HEV-3ra) is prevalent in rabbits worldwide and represents a particular risk for zoonotic infection. Current understanding of the molecular mechanisms of HEV pathogenesis is incomplete, particularly due to the limited availability of efficient and reliable cell culture systems. In order to identify genomic regions responsible for HEV propag…

Only adherence to hygienic practices when preparing wild game meats and cooking wild game meats to recommended internal temperatures can prevent transmission of trichinellosis to humans. The objective of this study was to describe demographic and clinical features of ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) in Korean patients compared to those in other countries. This retrospective study comprised 46 patients diagnosed with OT. All participants were recruited at the uveitis clinic in Seoul St. Mary's Hospital. The mean age of patients was 54 years. Of 46 patients, 31 (67.4%) were females. Of all patients, 24 (52.2%) had definite eating history of wild boar meat or deer blood while 5 (10.9%) had history of close contact with cats. The most common forms of OT were vitritis (91.3%) combined with …

The prion diseases, which include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, chronic wasting disease in cervids (i.e., deer, elk, moose, and reindeer), bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle, as well as sheep and goat scrapie, are caused by the conversion of the cellular prion protein (PrPC) into a disease-causing conformer (PrPSc). PrPC is a regular, GPI-anchored protein that is expressed on the cell surface of neurons and many other cell types. The structure of PrPC is well studied, based on analyses of recombinant PrP, which is thought to mimic the structure of native PrPC. The mature protein…

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a pathogen of increasing importance, which can be zoonotically transmitted from domestic pigs, wild boar, and deer to humans. Foodborne transmission by consumption of raw and undercooked liver, meat, or sausages prepared from infected animals has been documented. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of HEV in different types of sausages sold in Germany. As no standardized methods for HEV detection in food exist, several techniques of sample homogenization, virus concentration and nucleic acid extraction followed by real-time RT-PCR were compared …

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is one of the most common causes of acute hepatitis in tropical and temperate climates. Tropical genotypes 1 and 2 are associated with food-borne and waterborne transmission. Zoonotic reservoirs (mainly pigs, wild boar, and deer) are considered for genotypes 3 and 4, which exist in temperate climates. In view of the association of several zoonotic viruses with bats, we analyzed 3,869 bat specimens from 85 different species and from five continents for hepevirus RNA. HEVs were detected in African, Central American, and European bats, forming a novel phylogenetic clade in…

Crosses between the North American deer mouse species Peromyscus maniculatus (BW) and P. polionotus (PO) produce dramatic asymmetric developmental effects. BW females mated to PO males (female bw × male po) produce viable growth-retarded offspring. In contrast, PO females mated to BW males (female PO × male BW) produce overgrown but dysmorphic conceptuses. Most female PO × male BW offspring are dead by midgestation; those surviving to later time points display numerous defects reminiscent of several diseases. The hybrid effects are particularly pronounced in the placenta. Here we examine place…

BACKGROUND: Sporadic acute hepatitis E cases occurring in non-endemic areas have been associated to genotypes 3 and 4 of hepatitis E virus. Several studies have demonstrated the relationship among human and animals strains, mostly pigs and deers, from respective areas characterizing zoonosis. Circulation of genotype 3 of HEV in Brazilian swine herds have already been demonstrated. Nevertheless, no confirmed human cases have been reported to date in Brazil.
OBJECTIVES: A study was developed to attempt the identification of hepatitis E acute cases in Brazil.

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is an often-fatal lymphoproliferative disease of a variety of ungulates that occurs worldwide. It is caused by either of the highly related but distinct gammaherpesviruses alcelaphine herpesvirus-1 (AlHV-1, wildebeest reservoir) or ovine herpesvirus-2 (OvHV-2, sheep reservoir). MCF in rabbits is an excellent model as it closely resembles the disease in susceptible ungulates that include cattle, deer and bison. In this study, newly available and previously characterized monoclonal antibodies specific for rabbit leucocyte differentiation molecules were used to per…

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies are fatal neurodegenerative diseases that are caused by unconventional pathogens and affect the central nervous system of animals and humans. Several different forms of these diseases result from natural infection (i.e. exposure to transmissible spongiform encephalopathy agents or prions, present in the natural environment of the respective host). This holds true also for scrapie in sheep, bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle, chronic wasting disease in elk and deer, or variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, all of which are assumed to orig…
