BACKGROUND: Pathogenesis of dandruff/seborrhoeic dermatitis (D/SD) involves Malassezia yeasts, leading to the most widely accepted treatment strategy of topical application of antifungal agents, usually from rinse-off shampoos. Udder-thigh dermatitis (UTD) is a common disease in dairy cattle. The aim of this study was to define UTD incidence, its risk factors and the involved pathogens. Of 74 respondents, 72 (97%) reported having had the disease. On those farms the incidence was 5.3 cases per 100 cow years. The odds ratio (OR) of UTD in primiparous compared to multiparous cows was 23.4 (95% CI 17.3-33.8). An increase of sebum excretion rate (SER) is frequently observed in patients suffering from Parkinson's disease (PD). We examined 100 serial patients who were receiving care in a county outpatient immunodeficiency clinic and whose serum was positive by Western blot test for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Due to the high frequency and variety of the mucous cutaneous signs, the dermatologists are facing many cases of AIDS. These signs are no specific but only the consequence of a cellular immunodeficiency; they can be encountered in other situations, more specifically after an immunosuppressive treatment. Therefore, the diagnosis can be evocated only from AIDS association of the mucous cutaneous manifestations with other clinical, epidemiological and biological signs. The Kaposi's sarcoma which is present in 35 of the observed AIDS is in fact the cutaneous aspect of a cellular immunodeficiency.

A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled cross-over study was made of ketoconazole 200 mg daily in nineteen patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis.
