Maternal red blood cell folate and periconceptional folic acid supplementation are associated with neonatal brain maturation: a retrospective EEG-MRI study with term-equivalent imaging.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether maternal red blood cell (RBC) folate concentrations (biomarker of folate status) and documented periconceptional folic acid supplementation (FAS) are associated with neonatal brain maturation at term-equivalent age (TEA), using standardized MRI and EEG scoring. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 144 mother-infant pairs (March 2022-March 2024). Analyses used a two-factor design denoted GA × Folate, combining gestational age group (Preterm < 37 weeks; Term ≥ 37 weeks) and RBC folate status (Deficient < 906 nmol/L; Sufficient ≥ 906 nmol/L). All MRI/EEG was perform

Is there a relationship between homocysteine and vitiligo? A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Pigmentary dilution is observed in patients with homocystinuria. Therefore, it is possible that an increase of local homocysteine (Hcy) interferes with normal melanogenesis and plays a role in the pathogenesis of vitiligo. Vitamin B12 and folic acid, levels of which are decreased in vitiligo, are important cofactors in the metabolism of Hcy. Consequently, a nutritional deficiency in either of these two vitamins will result in an increase in homocysteine in the circulation, a finding that we expect to find in vitiligo. OBJECTIVE: To determine the level of Hcy in the blood of patien

Changes in behavioural parameters, oxidative stress and neurotrophins in the brain of adult offspring induced to an animal model of schizophrenia: The effects of FA deficient or FA supplemented diet during the neurodevelopmental phase.

A deficiency of maternal folic acid (FA) can compromise the function and development of the brain, and may produce a susceptibility to diseases such as schizophrenia (SZ) in the later life of offspring. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of both FA deficient and FA supplemented diets during gestation and lactation on behavioural parameters, the markers of oxidative stress and neurotrophic factors in adult offspring which had been subjected to an animal model of SZ. Female mother rats (Dam's) were separated into experimental maternal groups, which began receiving a special diet (

Applying inappropriate cutoffs leads to misinterpretation of folate status in the US population.

BACKGROUND: Folate cutoffs for risk of deficiency compared with possible deficiency were originally derived differently (experimental compared with epidemiologic data), and their interpretations are different. The matching of cutoffs derived from one assay with population-based data derived from another assay requires caution. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the extent of folate-status misinterpretation with the use of inappropriate cutoffs. DESIGN: In the cross-sectional NHANES, serum and red blood cell (RBC) folate were first measured with the use of a radioprotein-binding assay (RPBA) (1988-2006)

Folate deficiency and homocysteine induce toxicity in cultured dorsal root ganglion neurons via cytosolic calcium accumulation.

Folate deficiency induces neurotoxicity by multiple routes, including increasing cytosolic calcium and oxidative stress via increasing levels of the neurotoxin homocysteine (HC), and inducing mitochondrial and DNA damage. Because some of these neurotoxic effects overlap with those observed in motor neuron disease, we examined the impact of folate deprivation on dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons in culture. Folate deprivation for 2 h increased cytosolic calcium and reactive oxygen species (ROS) and impaired mitochondrial function. Treatment with nimodipine [an L voltage-sensitive calcium chann

Telephonic intervention to combat non-adherence to oral iron-folic acid supplementation in pregnancy: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Iron deficiency anemia is a public health problem globally attributing to high incidences of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. Iron and folic acid supplementation (IFAS) is essential and provided free of cost by the public health sectors, however, a systematic review shows that the national-level adherence to oral Iron-Folic Acid Supplementation (IFAS) is less than half in pregnant women, and the significant obstacles to non-adherence are fear of side effects and forgetfulness. This trial was designed to mitigate the side effects and tackle forgetfulness with telephoni

Identification of SIBO Subtypes along with Nutritional Status and Diet as Key Elements of SIBO Therapy.

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a pathology of the small intestine and may predispose individuals to various nutritional deficiencies. Little is known about whether specific subtypes of SIBO, such as the hydrogen-dominant (H+), methane-dominant (M+), or hydrogen/methane-dominant (H+/M+), impact nutritional status and dietary intake in SIBO patients. The aim of this study was to investigate possible correlations between biochemical parameters, dietary nutrient intake, and distinct SIBO subtypes. This observational study included 67 patients who were newly diagnosed with SIBO. Bi

Vitamin B complex mitigates cardiac dysfunction in high-methionine diet-induced hyperhomocysteinemia.

This research is designed to test the hypothesis that elevated homocysteine (Hcy) levels in vivo, caused by a deficit in vitamin B complex, promote changes in cardiac function and redox status that lead to heart failure. In order to conduct the study, we used adult male Wistar albino rats (n = 30; 4 weeks old; 100 ± 15 g body weight). Hyperhomocysteinaemia (HHcy) in these animals was achieved by dietary manipulation. For 4 weeks, the animals were fed with a standard rodent chow (control, CF), a diet enriched in methionine with no deficiency in B vitamins (i.e., folic acid, B6 and B12) (HMNV) o

[Recurrent aphthous stomatitis: current etiopathogenetic and therapeutic concepts].

The authors review the literature on aetiopathogenesis and therapeutic management of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. The data regarding the role of genetic, nutritional and microbiological factors in the genesis of recurrent aphthous stomatitis has been particularly examined. Despite significant associations with some antigens HLA have been reported in Southern Europe, there is no clear genetic predisposition in recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Several studies have analyzed the importance of iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 deficiencies, gluten intolerance and sensitivity to certain foods in the

[Factors affecting the response to erythropoiesis-stimulating agents].

Recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) has transformed the management chronic renal failure (CKD) and considerably improved the outcome of patients on regular chronic dialysis. However, a significant number of patients fail to respond to high of Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) and several causes of inadequate response to epoetin therapy have been identified. Some factors, such as gender, age, length of time on dialysis, type of dialysis and co-morbidities such as hemoglobinopathy, are not susceptible to clinical intervention. However, many other factors can be adjusted. Iron defici

Control of micronutrient deficiencies in India: obstacles and strategies.

Micronutrient deficiencies of vitamin A, iron, and iodine continue to be of public health significance in India. The government of India initiated national programs to prevent, control and combat these deficiencies and their serious consequences. The interventions involved (1) distribution of iodized salt in the endemic areas, (2) administration of semiannual massive dose of vitamin A to young children, and (3) distribution of iron-folic acid tablets to the vulnerable groups. Evaluations revealed that the biologic impact of these interventions was unsatisfactory. Inadequate allocation of funds

[Celiac disease. Risk factors for women in reproductive age].

In the past coeliac disease, or intolerance to gluten, has been considered a rare disease in infancy, whose most important signs were chronic diarrhea with malabsorption and reduced growth. However, besides this classical form, there are a number of other clinical and subclinical forms which may appear even in the adult life and without any overt intestinal sign. The alterations may affect, e.g., the liver, thyroid, skin and the female and male reproductive system. The overall prevalence of the different forms of coeliac disease in Western Europe is at least 1:300. The aim of the present paper

[Addition of vitamins and minerals to corn and wheat flour in Mexico].

In Mexico, marginal micronutrient deficiency is widespread and affects the health status and function of many Mexicans. A program to add nutrients to corn and wheat flour has been promoted by the Ministry of Health. This document describes the scientific and technological bases of the program. The main objective is to restore the nutrients which are lost during cereal processing to obtain flour and food products. Also, certain nutrients which are known to be deficient in a high proportion of Mexicans, and which should be supplemented in the diet for the benefit of the population are also inclu

Prospects for prevention of neural tube defects by vitamin supplementation.

Recent studies have resolved the debate over the role of vitamins in preventing neural tube defects. The British Medical Research Council trial demonstrated that 4 mg of folate daily, but not other vitamins, prevented 72% of recurrences. The Hungarian trial prevented neural tube defects in women who had not previously had affected children by giving multivitamins containing 0.8 mg of folate. The US Public Health Service currently recommends that women at risk for becoming pregnant take 0.4 mg of folate daily. Unfortunately, most pregnancies are unplanned, and women not planning to become pregn
