Autologous eye drops for the treatment of dry eye and neurotrophic keratitis.

Tears-which contain fibronectin, growth facors, and vitamins that support the migration, proliferation, and differentiation of the conjunctival and corneal epithelium-nourish, protect, and refresh the eye. An inadequate tear film produces a variety of symptoms (ocular irritation, itching, burning, eye strain or fatigue, photophobia, a foreign-body sensation, a sharp stabbing pain, blurred vision) that wax and wane in intensity and are characteristic of disorders such as dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) and neurotrophic keratitis. In patients for whom commercially manufactured eye drops fai

Dilation of simultaneous laryngeal and oesophageal stricture with two T-tubes.

The treatment of double strictures in the airway and the oesophagus has always been time-consuming and causes additional suffering. A new technique using an open approach with the placement of two Montgomery silicone T-tubes to support and dilate the two strictures was successfully performed on a patient after caustic substance ingestion. Scar tissue was incised before two T-tubes were positioned into the larynx and oesophagus through a laryngo-fissure approach. The tubes remained in position for one year and no complications occurred. No foreign body sensation or prosthesis migration was obse

[Two cases of a foreign body in the renal pelvis].

We report two cases in which the renal stone originated from a foreign body which was used to treat a urinary tract fistula by a gynecologist. The first patient developed a vesicovaginal fistula following an emergency Caesarean operation. At the time of correcting surgery, a 5 Fr ureteral catheter was used as a splint catheter elsewhere, 108 mm of which somehow migrated up to the renal pelvis and a stone was formed 4.5 years later. The second patient underwent a radical hysterectomy for uterine cervical cancer. Postoperatively, a ureterovaginal fistula developed, for which a double-J ureteral

Primary vaginal stones.

Calculi composed of urinary salts rarely occur outside the urinary tract. In female subjects such calculi occuring in the vagina are uncommon, with only 26 cases reported thus far. These stones may be primary or secondary. Primary stones are formed in the vagina owing to the deposition of urinary salts as a result of continuous urinary leakage into the vagina. They have been described in association with urinary leakage caused by vesicovaginal fistulas, urethrovaginal fistulas, an ectopic vaginal ureter in a 7-year-old child and incontinence owing to a neurogenic bladder. A secondardy vaginal

Successful management of penetrating shrapnel injury to the left ureter with delayed projectile migration through the urinary tract.

INTRODUCTION: We present a case of successful endoscopic treatment of a penetrating shrapnel injury to the left ureter. The patient experienced spontaneous migration of the projectile through the urinary tract, leading to renal colic. CASE PRESENTATION: A military man sustained multiple shrapnel injuries to the soft tissues and abdomen, including lacerations of the intestines, during enemy shelling in eastern Ukraine. On the 35th day after the trauma, the patient reported sudden pain in the left lumbar area. Subsequent investigation confirmed the presence of a foreign body in the lower part o

"All things must pass" - Cutaneous migration of an endobronchial valve.

The Zephyr (PulmonX Inc., Redwood, CA) endobronchial valve (EBV), predominantly designed for lung volume reduction in emphysema, can also be used to close a spontaneous or post-operative prolonged air leak (PAL). We describe a previously unreported complication of cutaneous migration of an EBV, inserted for management of a PAL from a postoperative bronchopleural fistula (BPF), in a 62-year-old male following a right upper lobe posterior-apical (S1,2) segmentectomy. His PAL resulted in a chronic empyema which failed to respond to surgical debridement, anterior cavernostomy and pectoral myoplast

Soft tissue response of the rabbit larynx to Gore-Tex implants.

The use of Gore-Tex (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) for medialization laryngoplasty has recently been described. Clinically, this laryngeal implant has performed well, but no animal studies evaluating the use of this implant in the larynx have been published. This study examines the gross and histologic response of the rabbit larynx to the Gore-Tex implant. Five rabbits underwent bilateral medialization with the Gore Thyroplasty Device. The vocal folds were left innervated and mobile. After 6 months, the rabbits were painlessly sacrificed and the implants were evaluated by gross inspection

Lingual thyroid: value of integrated imaging.

Lingual thyroid is an uncommon cause of oropharyngeal mass, due to a congenital anomaly of thyroidal development and migration: It is defined precisely as the presence of thyroid tissue in the midline of the tongue base between circumvallatae papillae and the epiglottis. We report a case of lingual thyroid in which the integration of clinical data, sonography, color-duplex Doppler, MRI and scintigraphy was determinant in demonstrating the disease. A 22-year-old woman presented with a sensation of foreign body in the throat, dysphonia, dyspnoea and dysphagia; we performed sonography (7.5 MHz li

Retrograde Migration of an Au-198 Grain to the Submandibular Gland Post Brachytherapy Treatment of Floor of Mouth Cancer.

At our institution, radiation oncologists routinely treat early-stage oral cancer with low-dose-rate brachytherapy (LDR-BRT) using Au-198 grains. In this report, we show a unique case of a patient with a gold grain located within the submandibular gland, found incidentally during follow-up after LDR-BRT for floor of mouth cancer. One month after the implant, he showed sialadenitis-like symptoms, but the pain resolved two months later. All the grains were detected around the anterior sublingual area by computed tomography (CT) four months after the implant. Unexpectedly, 11 months after the imp

Injection laryngoplasty with calcium hydroxylapatite gel implant in an in vivo canine model.

The ideal injectable agent for vocal fold medialization is biocompatible, durable, sized to prevent phagocytosis and migration, and formulated for easy injection and does not adversely affect the viscoelastic properties of the vocal fold. We tested a cohesive implant of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) particles in a gel carrier in an in vivo canine model of phonation. Six dogs underwent unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve section and injection laryngoplasty of the paralyzed vocal fold with a CaHA implant. The six follow-up examinations were performed at 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, and the la

A case of intraoperative detection of a central venous catheter in azygos vein arch during esophageal cancer surgery.

BACKGROUND: Central venous catheter (CVC) is often used in the perioperative management of esophageal cancer. The position of the CVC tip has been reported to shift with body positioning and, although infrequent, may traverse into the azygos vein arch. Herein, we describe a case where a migrated CVC tip in the azygous vein arch was identified during esophageal cancer surgery, preventing CVC dissection concurrent with azygous vein arch resection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old man was diagnosed with advanced esophageal cancer and was referred to our department for surgery after undergoing ne

Foreign Body Appendicitis Coexisting With Ascariasis in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report.

In clinical practice, the typical approach to ingested foreign bodies in stable patients involves expectant management, as most materials pass through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract without adverse effects. However, foreign bodies that travel through the appendix's lumen can cause acute appendicitis due to their inability to exit the colon. Rarer causes of appendicitis include parasitic infiltration by Ascaris lumbricoides. The wandering behavior of Ascaris lumbricoides within the GI tract can lead to various surgical complications in the abdomen. Occasionally, these parasites can migrate to

Case report and literature review: An intrahepatic sewing needle in a child.

BACKGROUND: The presence of intrahepatic foreign bodies is a rare occurrence at the emergency department. Normally, foreign bodies reach the liver through migration. Incidence is lower among children than among adults, and the circumstances of children are often different. We report a 19-month-old boy with a sewing needle in the liver and review the previous reports of intrahepatic sewing needle in the PubMed database from the last three decades. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-month-old boy was transferred to our center from a local hospital presenting intermittent cough and rhinorrhea. A chest radi

Occult fish bone ingestion inducing cross-site injury: a rare case report of gastric bleeding and jejunal perforation.

BACKGROUND: Fish bone ingestion is a common clinical problem. However, occult ingestion causing concurrent gastric bleeding and jejunal perforation is extremely rare and easily misdiagnosed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old male presented with upper abdominal pain and hematemesis with no clear history of foreign body ingestion. Abdominal CT revealed a high-density shadow in the stomach, localized gas-fluid accumulation in the small intestine, and minimal surrounding exudation. Emergency gastroscopy failed to identify the source of bleeding. The patient subsequently developed peritonitis, and

[Removal of multiple foreign bodies from the head region via endonasal, transoral, and transcutaneous approaches].

In Hungary, the incidence of firearm-related injuries is low; consequently, domestic clinical experience and the number of published cases remain limited, which makes the selection of appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic strategies particularly difficult. Small lead pellets from shotguns easily penetrate tissues and, due to their tendency to migrate along tissue planes, can significantly complicate both localization and surgical removal. They may cause serious complications, including neurovascular injury, chronic lead poisoning, or infections such as abscess, sepsis, and meningitis. The hea

Incidental Diagnosis of a Gossypiboma With Complete Transmural Migration Into the Jejunum After a Hysterectomy: A Case Report.

Gossypiboma, or retained surgical sponge, is a rare and preventable surgical complication. Complete transmural migration of a retained sponge into the gastrointestinal tract without overt intestinal perforation is an exceptionally unusual phenomenon that poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. A 41-year-old woman with a history of open hysterectomy seven months prior presented with progressive neurological deterioration, severe metabolic encephalopathy, and suspected urosepsis, without classical signs of mechanical bowel obstruction. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) demonstr

Posttraumatic bronchobiliary fistulae due to foreign body remnants after  a road traffic injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bronchobiliary fistula is an extremely rare disease that involves abnormal communication between a hepatic segment and bronchial tree. It is mostly caused by untreated hydatid cyst, liver abscess, iatrogenic stenosis, and, rarely, trauma. CASE PRESENTATION: We experienced an extremely rare case of bronchobiliary fistula after motor vehicle accident. A 15-year-old Persian boy visited our clinic with chief complaints of persistent pleuritic chest pain, productive cough, weight loss, and fever for 2 months.
