16S rDNA is the historical gold standard for bacterial identification, particularly in metabarcoding approaches reliant on sequence similarity thresholds. We analyzed 6,660 Rhizobium 16S rRNA gene sequences from GenBank to examine the relationship between sequence identity and three metadata: species name, host plant, and geographic origin. Using an iterative BLAST-based pipeline, we detected 116,069 pairwise matches and assessed concordance among sequences (average length 1,328 bp) sharing 100% identity. For those in which the organism name, host plant and country of isolation were present in

Chlorine disinfection resistance in pathogenic microorganisms poses severe environmental concerns and public health risks. While phages play critical roles in host adaptation to environmental stress, how poly-host phages contribute to bacterial resistance to chlorine disinfectants remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated shifts in the population dynamics, transcriptional profiles, and function potentials of cross-genus phage-bacterial communities under exposure to chlorine disinfectants in a continuously operated anaerobic-anoxic-oxic system over a 92-day period, using integrated metag

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of carbapenemase-producing (CP) Escherichia coli has increased worldwide, with the first reports in Europe dating back to the early 2000s. As part of the European Genomic Reference Laboratory Capacity Building (EURGen-RefLabCap) project, Slovenia conducted its first national genomic surveillance study of CP-E. coli. The aim was to characterize CP-E. coli isolates recovered from Slovenian patients between 1 January and 31 December 2023 using whole-genome sequencing (WGS), providing a national snapshot of the population structure and circulating strains.
METHODS: WGS

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-EC) strains present a significant menace to the well-being of both animals and humans. However, limited information is available regarding their profiles in pigeons. Using a combination of whole genome sequencing, drug susceptibility testing, and bioinformatics analysis, we examined the genomic features and epidemiology of 95 ESBL-EC strains (41 racing and 54 meat pigeons) that were isolated from 11 Chinese cities. These strains belonged to seven phylogenetic groups (A, B1, B2, C, D, E, and F). Moreover, these isolates have 51 sero

Natural, geographical barriers have historically limited the spread of communicable diseases. This is no longer the case in today's interconnected world, paired with its unprecedented environmental and climate change, emphasising the intersection of evolutionary biology, epidemiology and geography (i.e. biogeography). A total of 14 articles of the special issue entitled "Geography and health: role of human translocation and access to care" document enhanced disease transmission of diseases, such as malaria, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, COVID-19 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome corona 2) a

Phenotypic and genotypic tolerance in 71 Listeria monocytogenes isolates from different varieties of foods to benzalkonium chloride (BC) and cadmium were investigated by susceptibility test and molecular methods. To investigate the role of efflux pumps in BC tolerance, reserpine, an efflux pump inhibitor, was added to the BC tolerant strains. Tolerance to BC and cadmium were 26.8% (19/71) and 49.3% (35/71) respectively. Strains with BC tolerance were significantly more frequent among those of serotype 4b (100%, 6/6) than among those of serotype 1/2a (or 3a) (13.5%, 5/37), which represent the p

Plant protection against pathogens, pests and weeds has been progressively reoriented from a therapeutic approach to a rational use of pesticide chemicals in which consumer health and environmental preservation prevail over any other productive or economic considerations. Microbial pesticides are being introduced in this new scenario of crop protection and currently several beneficial microorganisms are the active ingredients of a new generation of microbial pesticides or the basis for many natural products of microbial origin. The development of a microbial pesticide requires several steps ad

BACKGROUND: Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) strains are the major causative agents of human urinary tract infections (UTIs). Many patients who develop UTIs will experience a recurrent UTI (RUTI) within 6 months despite antibiotic-mediated clearance of the initial infection. A significant proportion of RUTIs are caused by E. coli identical to the original strain. UPEC employs several strategies to adhere, colonize, and persist within the bladder niche. Knowledge about the mechanisms regulating specific host-pathogen interactions that promote bacterial persistence is necessary to develop n

Escherichia coli resistant to extended-spectrum cephalosporins have been detected in the Norwegian broiler production, despite the fact that antimicrobial agents are rarely used. The genetic mechanism responsible for cephalosporin resistance is mainly attributed to the presence of the blaCMY-2 gene encoding a plasmid-mediated AmpC-beta-lactamase (pAmpC). The aim of this study was to characterize and compare blaCMY-2 containing Escherichia coli isolated from the intestinal flora of broilers and retail chicken meat (fillets) to identify possible successful clones and/or resistance plasmids wides

UNLABELLED: Klebsiella quasipneumoniae is an emerging opportunistic pathogen increasingly associated with multidrug-resistant infections. In this study, we characterized four clinical isolates of K. quasipneumoniae subsp. quasipneumoniae assigned to the ST978-KL103 clonotype, all linked to poor clinical outcomes. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed an extensively drug-resistant phenotype, including resistance to β-lactams, carbapenems, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, tigecycline, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, with polymyxin B as the only effective agent. Streptococcus parasuis is currently not only an underestimated zoonotic pathogen but also a bacterial source of infection in food animals, posing a potential threat to global public health. Despite increased reports in recent years, systematic studies in Northwest China remain scarce. However, the lack of complete genomic sequence information has limited in-depth bioinformatics analysis of multidrug-resistant S. parasuis isolated from pigs. This study reports the whole-genome sequencing results of S. parasuis strain A1 isolated from pigs. The A1 genome consists of a single circular chromosome

Bats are widely recognized as reservoirs of emerging and re-emerging pathogens, and their ecological interactions with humans and livestock present important opportunities for the transmission of infectious agents and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). However, little is known about the occurrence of resistant bacteria in bat-associated environments in Zambia or their potential role in the maintenance of AMR outside clinical and agricultural settings. This study investigated the genomic characteristics of cefotaxime-resistant Proteobacteria isolated from bat fecal droppings collected at Leopards

Acinetobacter baumannii strain 17978 is an opportunistic pathogen with a unique DNA damage repair response that lacks the LexA repressor but induces ~150 genes after DNA damage. It uses the UmuD homolog UmuDAb and the small protein DdrR, unique to Acinetobacter, to repress multiple horizontally acquired umuDC error-prone polymerase genes through an unknown mechanism. We used reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and immunoblotting to elucidate UmuDAb regulatory requirements and DdrR contributions to the corepression of this specialized regulon. Mutations in the putative UmuDAb helix-turn-heli

Shigella is a highly invasive pathogen that causes dysentery and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in children under five years of age. This agent is a major public health problem in developing countries. Multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat (VNTR) analysis (MLVA) is a reliable, cost-effective typing method with high discriminatory power and reproducible results. The rise of drug resistance in Shigella strains is a growing global health threat. Despite the significance of Shigella in Iran, there is limited knowledge about genetic diversity and drug resistance profi

Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) is a multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogen causing severe infections in immunocompromised patients, prompting the exploration of alternative therapies like bacteriophage therapy. In this study, we isolated and characterized a novel halophilic lytic bacteriophage, Halo KS-7, targeting K. pneumoniae, and used an AI-driven annotation pipeline in Python to analyze its genome and therapeutic potential. Bacteriophages were isolated from Hospital wastewater, purified through plaque isolation, and confirmed using the double-layer agar method. Morphologica

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a notorious neurotoxin, and its production and degradation in the environment are mainly driven by microorganisms. A variety of microbial MeHg producers carrying the gene pair hgcAB and degraders carrying the merB gene have been separately reported in recent studies. However, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the simultaneous investigation of the diversities of microbial MeHg producers and degraders in a given habitat, and no studies have been performed to explore to what extent these two contrasting microbial groups correlate with MeHg accumulation in the
