STUDY OBJECTIVE: To emphasize the need for histologic evaluation of intrauterine lesions. Six cases of unexpected mesenchymal uterine tumors were diagnosed following pathologic review of specimens obtained during hysteroscopy to evaluate intrauterine lesions.

The authors describe clinical and pathologic features present in an adolescent girl who had a gastric tumor and mediastinal mass. The latter was shown to be a paraganglioma, and the gastric neoplasm was classified as malignant "leiomyoblastoma," with the use of current histologic criteria. In a retrospective study the records of 34 consecutive cases with tumors metastatic to the orbit were reviewed with special attention to the management and prognosis of these patients. The primary tumor site was the breast in 20 patients, prostate in 5, kidney in 2 and skin in 2. The remaining 5 patients had other primary tumour sites. The symptoms of orbital metastasis preceded the detection of the primary tumor in 8 cases (24%). The lymph nodes of the parotid gland get their tributary lymph vessels from the skin of the face, the scalp and the anterior face of the concha. Therefore malignant skin tumours--the majority of them are melanomas and squamous cell carcinomas--may lead to parotid metastases. The cases of two patients who had hepatic tumors of long duration interpreted as hamartomas in whom, after many years, widespread metastases of malignant smooth muscle cells developed in a pattern of "carcinomatous lymphangitis" in the lungs are described. In one of the cases calcification of the hepatic nodules was prominent. The smooth muscle origin of the malignant cells was established only on electron microscopic examination. These cases appear similar to others variously reported as mixed tumors, hepatic cell carcinomas, and mesotheliomas.
