A systematic review and meta-analysis of pulmonary surfactant combined with budesonide in the treatment of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS), if caused by a lack of pulmonary surfactant (PS), leads to progressive alveolar collapse. Glucocorticoids have anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects and can reduce bronchial and pulmonary edema. This research hopes to systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of animal-derived PS combined with the glucocorticoid drug budesonide in the treatment of NRDS. METHODS: Electronic databases (i.e., Wanfang, Weipu, CNKI, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library) were searched from inception until May 30th, 2021. Studies relevant to the trea

Serratus anterior plane block for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: A meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: The serratus anterior plane block (SAPb) is a promising interfascial plane technique able to provide profound thoracic analgesia. As only a few studies with quite small patient samples are presently available, the analgesic efficacy of adding SAPb to general anaesthesia in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), compared with general anaesthesia only, remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: Our primary aim was to assess the analgesic efficacy of SAPb for VATS peri-operative pain control. The secondary aims were to evaluate differences in postoperative opioid use, intra-operative hypoten

Efficacy of antifibrinolytics in reducing blood loss during hip reconstruction surgery in cerebral palsy children. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) children undergoing hip reconstruction are more prone to blood loss during surgery due to poor nutritional status, antiepileptic medication intake, depletion of clotting factors, and the extent of surgery involved. We conducted this present review to analyze whether antifibrinolytics during hip surgery in CP children would reduce surgical blood loss and transfusion requirements. METHODS: Three databases (PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane library) were searched independently for publications mentioning the use of antifibrinolytics during hip reconstruction surgery in

Renal Histopathological Changes in Coronavirus Disease 2019 Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Individual Patient Data.

The major targets of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are the respiratory and immune systems. However, a significant proportion of hospitalized patients had kidney dysfunction. The histopathological surveys have principally focused on respiratory, hematopoietic, and immune systems, whereas histopathologic data of kidney injury are lacking. Our study aimed to summarize the renal histopathological findings in COVID-19 from the published case report and case series. We conducted a systematic searching of databases such as MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library for published reports of COVID-19

Which Probiotic Is the Most Effective for Treating Acute Diarrhea in Children? A Bayesian Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Acute diarrhea is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children under five. Probiotics are beneficial for treating acute diarrhea in children, but unclear which specific probiotic is the most effective. We performed a Bayesian network meta-analysis to examine the comparative effectiveness of probiotics. By searching EMBASE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library up to 31 March 2021, randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on probiotics for treating acute diarrhea in children were included. Primary outcomes included the duration of diarrhea and diarrhea lasting ≥2 days, and secondary outcomes includ

Chronic Liver Disease in Ethiopia with a Particular Focus on the Etiological Spectrums: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies.

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, chronic liver disease (CLD) is the 7th leading cause of death, accounting for about 24 deaths per 100000 populations in 2019. Despite its burden, there is a lack of compiled pieces of evidence on CLD in the country. Thus, this systematic review and meta-analysis is intended to provide the pooled estimates of CLD etiologies and mortality rate in CLD patients in Ethiopia. METHOD: PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, institutional repositories, national digital library, and the bibliography of the eligible articles information were the source of data for the present re

Safety of Prophylactic Heparin in the Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism After Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) have a nearly fourfold greater risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE) than those with acute ischemic stroke, and VTE after sICH is associated with high risk for in-hospital mortality. The benefit from prophylactic heparin for VTE remains uncertain because its safety is not documented. In this study, we used an updated meta-analysis to evaluate the safety of heparin for the prevention of VTE in patients with sICH. METHODS: Electronic databases Medline and Embase from January 1990 to November 2017 and the Cochrane Library were

Is prehospital use of active external warming dangerous for patients with accidental hypothermia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Optimal prehospital management and treatment of patients with accidental hypothermia is a matter of frequent debate, with controversies usually revolving around the subject of rewarming. The rule of thumb in primary emergency care and first aid for patients with accidental hypothermia has traditionally been to be refrain from prehospital active rewarming and to focus on preventing further heat loss. The potential danger of active external rewarming in a prehospital setting has previously been generally accepted among the emergency medicine community based on a fear of potential com

Immunonutrition for traumatic brain injury in children and adolescents: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of paediatric trauma death and disability worldwide. The 'Guidelines for the Management of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury (Fourth Edition)' recommend that nutritional goals should be achieved within 5-7 days of injury. Immune-enhancing nutrition or immunonutrition, referring to the addition of specialised nutrients, including glutamine, alanine, omega-3 fatty acids and nucleotides, to standard nutrition formulas, may improve surgical outcomes in the perioperative period. However, the role of immune-enhancing nutritional supplements
