Restoration of the Anterior Segment in a Cleft Palate in Conjunction with Surgically Facilitated Orthodontic Therapy: An Interdisciplinary Approach.

A 26-year-old woman was referred to a periodontal surgical practice for concerns related to gingival recession. After several consultations among the orthodontist, periodontist, and cosmetic/restorative dentist, she decided to have surgically facilitated orthodontic therapy as part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary treatment planning process to correct her constricted maxillary arch form, augment thin dentoalveolar facial bone, simultaneously with gaining root coverage as well as improving attached gingiva width and mucogingival thickness. As a consequence of changing the arch form, an imp

Classification and treatment of Class II subdivision malocclusions.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with Class II subdivision malocclusions are a challenge for clinicians because reestablishing symmetry in 1 arch or both arches is often a treatment goal. In patients with mandibular skeletal asymmetry, surgery is often a treatment option. However, patients may be unwilling to undergo surgery, and other options might have to be considered. The aim of this study was to evaluate the etiologies and outcomes of Class II subdivision patients treated at the University of Washington graduate orthodontic clinic in Seattle from 1995 through 2011. METHODS: A search of patients tr

Multidisciplinary management of a child with severe open bite and amelogenesis imperfecta.

AIM: To present a case of multidisciplinary management and fixed rehabilitation of a young girl with amelogenesis imperfecta (AI), a severe open bite and occlusal instability. BACKGROUND: AI is a genetic disorder characterized by enamel malformations, disturbances in tooth eruption and significant attrition. Early diagnosis is essential, since rapid breakdown of tooth structure may occur, giving rise to acute symptoms and complicated treatment. As AI is frequently accompanied by unesthetic appearance, open bite deformity and malocclusion, a multidisciplinary approach is often required. CASE

Dynamics of dental implants and orthodontics in today's periodontal prosthesis.

Periodontal prosthesis refers to multidisciplinary efforts to stop disease progression, correct deformities created by dental diseases, and establish a therapeutic occlusion to restore the form and function of the masticatory system. These efforts are critical for the long-term prognosis and maintenance of the guarded teeth and the overall prosthesis. This article presents a functionally and esthetically challenging case, which illustrates a multidisciplinary approach--specifically implantology and orthodontics--and how they impact on each other during treatment. The role and importance of den

Comparative Impact of Clear Aligners and Traditional Fixed Appliances on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background and Objectives: The impact of orthodontic appliances on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) has gained increasing attention, particularly in relation to patient-centered outcomes. Clear aligners (CAs) are often perceived as more comfortable than fixed appliances (FAs), although evidence remains limited and heterogeneous. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the effects of CAs and FAs on OHRQoL in patients with Angle class I malocclusion and to further evaluate the reliability of the findings using trial sequential analysis (TSA). Materials and Methods:

Orthodontic distalization with rigid plate fixation for anchorage after bone grafting and maxillary sinus lifting.

A 68-year-old woman was treated with an autogenous particulated bone graft from the anterior part of the mandible to elevate the right maxillary sinus floor, which was next to the alveolar ridge of an edentulous area, to facilitate dental implant placement. A rigid plate for anchorage was placed into the zygomatic bone. The maxillary right canine and the premolars were moved distally 6 months after the implant was placed and osteointegration of the bone graft had occurred. The Class II relationship was corrected. After tooth movement, the patient underwent multislice computed tomography to det

Accuracy of virtual reality and stereolithographic models in maxillo-facial surgical planning.

Computed tomography is a medical instrument that can be useful not only for diagnostic purposes, but also for surgical planning, thanks to the fact that it offers volumetric information which can be translated in three dimensional models. These models can be visualized, but also exported to Rapid Prototyping (RP) systems, that can produce these structures thanks to the rapidity and versatility of the technologies involved. The literature reports various cases of stereolithographic models used in orthopedic, neurological, and maxillo-facial surgery. In these contexts, the availability of a copy

Lingual orthodontics and forced eruption: a means for osseous and tissue regeneration.

An hopeless upper central incisor was subjected to forced eruption in order to improve and develop the implant site by distraction of the periodontal ligament-alveolar bone complex. The orthodontic extrusion was carried out with two aesthetic approaches: lingual orthodontics and a composite resin 2-2 veneer pontic. The first part of the extrusion was realized with lingual orthodontics alone, then, when the crown had been remodelled in its greatest part and the aesthetics was no more acceptable to the patient a composite resin 2-2 veneer pontic was bonded to the vestibular side of the other thr

A method of treating the patient with postpubescent juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

PURPOSE: Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is a perplexing and devastating disease for which establishment of a treatment protocol is difficult. The relatively low incidence and unknown cause of this disorder have made it difficult to establish when and how to intervene. Treatment protocols for the prepubescent patient (<12 years for girls and 14 years for boys), as well as for the adult, have been established. A protocol for postpubescence (ages 12 through 18 years) has yet to be established. This pilot study attempts to establish another treatment protocol for this particular subgroup of p

Comparison of anchorage reinforcement with temporary anchorage devices or a Herbst appliance during lingual orthodontic protraction of mandibular molars without maxillary counterbalance extraction.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic protraction of mandibular molars without maxillary counterbalance extraction in cases of aplasia or extraction requires stable anchorage. Reinforcement may be achieved by using either temporary anchorage devices (TAD) or a fixed, functional appliance. The objective was to compare the clinical effectiveness of both methods by testing the null-hypothesis of no significant difference in velocity of space closure (in mm/month) between them. In addition, we set out to describe the quality of posterior space management and treatment-related factors, such as loss of anchorage
