Prevalence and Early Detection of Hypodermosis in Goats using a Competitive ELISA System in Lorestan, Iran.

This study aimed to determine the prevalence and early detection of hypodermosis in goats by the investigation of Przhevalskiana larvae and sera collected from the infested animals. This study was conducted in Lorestan province, located in the South-West of Iran, from April 2017 up to April 2018. A total of 3350 goats slaughtered in Lorestan abattoirs were investigated by clinical-parasitological examinations in different periods. The larvae were collected from the back and flank regions of the slaughtered goats. The number of infested animals, gender and age, number of maggots present on the

Sheep blowfly strike: the cost of control in relation to risk.

Sheep blowfly strike (ovine cutaneous myiasis) is a widespread economic and welfare problem in sheep husbandry in many parts of the world. Strike incidence is determined by a complex interaction of fly abundance, host susceptibility and climate, combined with farmer husbandry and intervention strategies. Sheep farmers adopt a range of approaches to the type and timing of the management used for the control of blowfly strike, the rational basis for which is often not robust. Here a deterministic model, based on existing data relating to fly abundance, seasonal risk and strike incidence, is used…

Maggots in the Brain: Sequelae of Ignored Scalp Wound.

A 26-year-old male had suffered a burn injury to his scalp in childhood and ignored it. He presented with a complaint of something crawling on his head. Inspection of his scalp revealed multiple maggots on the brain surface with erosion of overlying bone and scalp. He was successfully managed by surgical debridement and regular dressing.

Temperature-dependent lipid metabolism in the blow fly Lucilia sericata.

An understanding of how arthropods use energy is fundamental to explaining their diverse life histories and adaptation to specific environments. It is also of importance when attempting to predict the impacts of environmental change on patterns of development and phenology. Here, lipid use by the economically important agent of ovine myiasis, Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae), was quantified at a range of temperatures. During pupation, at temperatures above the minimum temperature required for development (9 °C), pupae depleted an average of 30% of their total lipid over the course of …

Risk-spreading larviposition behaviour of female nose bot flies (Cephenemyia) attacking black-tailed deer.

While baited deer models were under observation nine Cephenemyia jellisoni Townsend (Diptera: Oestridae) females and seven C. apicata Bennett & Sabrosky engaged in a risk-spreading larviposition behaviour by larvipositing on models only once and then flying away. Additionally, analysis of 225 unobserved larvipostions in which larvae were trapped in adhesive on the muzzles of deer models showed that 94% of C. apicata and 95% of C. jellisoni larviposited on a model only once. The number of single larvipositions was highly significant for both species. The principal adaptive significance of such

Prevalence study in horses infected by Gasterophilus sp. in an eastern region of Poland.

A survey to determine current prevalence of Gasterophilus spp. (bot flies) in equids (n=400) at necropsy in slaughtered horses was conducted at the abattoir in Rawicz. The evaluation was performed according to sex, age, larval stages, severity of infestation and localization, respectively. Only Gasterophilus intestinalis and Gasterophilus nasalis were detected. The prevalence determined in the eastern part of Poland was of 47%. The high prevalence of this parasite infection in the Polish horse population confirms that Gasterophilosis spp. has to be taken into serious consideration and prophyla

Prevalence and biology of goat warble fly infestation by Przhevalskiana silenus in Jammu province, India.

Examination of 3,960 goats brought from six districts of Jammu province and slaughtered at Jammu abattoir from July 2005 to June 2006 revealed 47.22% prevalence of larval stages of warble fly (Przhevalskiana silenus Brauer, 1858) in goats. Highest prevalence was recorded in Udhampur (56.44%) and lowest in Doda district (13.49%). Classification of the study area into four zones based on height (meters above sea level), viz., zone I (300-325 m asl), zone II (325-800 m asl), zone III (800-1,500 m asl), and zone IV (>1,500 m asl), revealed significant (p < 0.01) difference in infestation among ani

Impact of previous infestation on dynamics of circulating hypodermin C in cattle artificially infested with Hypoderma lineatum (Diptera: Oestridae).

Four groups of cattle were artificially infested with 50 first instar Hypoderma lineatum after either a primary natural infestation or in the absence of a primary infestation. In two groups the primary infestation had been terminated by the application of either an organophosphate insecticide or a macrocyclic lactone parasiticide. Circulating hypodermin C and specific antibodies were measured for 40 weeks after the artificial infestation. Stage specific mortality of the larvae was also monitored. Previously uninfested cattle exhibited typical antibody and antigen profiles during the infestatio
