Are males with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at risk for reading disabilities?

Males with Duchenne muscular dystrophy have sub-average cognitive capacities and may manifest more specifically language-related deficits. In the current study, the information-processing capacity, reading performance, and behavioral functioning of 25 Dutch males with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (mean age 10.1 years) were systematically assessed. This study relied on the use of a new battery of tests to explore more precisely reading disabilities in males with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Five of the males had serious reading problems and another five had moderate reading problems, which indic

Cognitive-behavioral predictors of asthma morbidity in inner-city children.

Asthma is a growing health problem among children in the United States, particularly in urban, inner-city areas. This article examines the relationship between cognitive-behavioral aspects of asthma management (caretaker asthma knowledge, expectations, and problem-solving) and asthma morbidity in a sample of 1,376 inner-city children with physician-diagnosed asthma. In the analyses, baseline symptom severity served as a covariate, and the average of the 3-, 6-, and 9-month follow-up data served as the outcome measure. Children of caregivers with ineffective problem-solving strategies had signi

Clinical correlates of unawareness of deficits among patients with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the associations between unawareness of deficits and clinical correlates, including apathy and depression, among patients with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: Fifty-five patients with AD were enrolled. Unawareness of memory deficits and psychosis or behavior problems was assessed. The Apathy Evaluation Scale informant version and the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD) were used to measure apathy and depression, respectively. RESULTS: In all, 32 (57.2%) and 27 (49.1%) participants were identified as being unaware of memory deficits an

The differential effects of forms and settings of exposure to violence on adolescents' adjustment.

This study investigated the link between exposure to violence and psychosocial adjustment for 442 Chinese secondary school students in Form 1-3. The students completed an inventory assessing exposure to violence through witnessing and through direct victimization in different settings (community, school, and home). Multiple measures and informants (i.e., self-report, teacher report, and school report) were used to assess emotional, behavioral, and cognitive functioning in adolescents. The results of this study showed that overall exposure to violence was related to emotional and behavior probl

Correlates and predictors of hyperactivity and aggression: a longitudinal study of parent-referred problem preschoolers.

Forty-six parent-referred problem 3-year-olds and 22 comparison children were assessed with parent report and observational measures; 54 were followed up at age 4, and 53 were followed again at age 6. Lower social class and greater family stress were associated with higher symptom ratings at initial referral and age 6 follow-up. Negative and directive maternal behavior and negative and noncompliant child behavior observed in the lab at age 3 were associated with higher maternal ratings of child aggression and hyperactivity; these observed behaviors continued to be highly predictive of maternal

The role of simple emotion recognition skills among school aged boys at risk of ADHD.

Poor social skills and behavioral problems are a major component of ADHD. The different explanations offered so far, such as cognitive deficits and deficient self regulation, have not been able fully to account for the various aspects of the social dysfunction, suggesting that other mechanisms might underlay this impairment. Our study sought to assess the emotion recognition of Israeli boys at risk of ADHD, and to evaluate its associations with their social skills. A group of 111 boys (grades 4 and 5) were assigned to an At-risk (n=50) and a control (n=61) group based on their scores in an ADH

Cognitive-behavioral treatment for childhood sleep disorders.

Sleep problems are very prevalent during childhood and may have adverse developmental impact. The efficacy of a number of cognitive-behavioral interventions for the most prevalent problems such as difficulty falling asleep and night-wakings has been repeatedly demonstrated with relatively rapid outcomes and high success rates. Preventive interventions in infancy have shown some promise in lowering the rates of sleep problems in infants of trained parents. Cognitive-behavioral interventions have also been proposed for childhood parasomnias (sleepwalking, night terrors, nightmares, and rhythmic

Cosleeping versus solitary sleeping in children with bedtime problems: child emotional problems and parental distress.

This study investigated sleep, behavioral and emotional problems, and parental relationships and psychological distress in a group of school-aged children with bedtime problems and persistent cosleeping, compared to solitary sleepers and controls. Participants were 148 school-aged children with bedtime problems (44 cosleepers, 104 solitary sleepers) and 228 healthy peers. Results suggested that cosleepers have a significantly later bedtime, shorter nighttime sleep duration, higher Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) bedtime resistance and sleep anxiety scores, and more behavioral and

Mediating the Verbal Ability-Conduct Problems Relationship with Child Empathy and Self-Control.

This study was performed in an effort to determine whether poor inhibitory control, operationalized as weak verbal skills, contributes to early antisocial behavior by impeding a child's ability to empathize with others and exercise control over their behavior. A model was tested whereby child empathy and self-control were conceptualized as mediators of a putative relationship between low verbal ability and future conduct problems. A mediation analysis was performed in which the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT), a measure of auditory comprehension skills, receptive vocabulary, and verbal

Violence Exposure and the Development of School-Related Functioning: Mental Health, Neurocognition, and Learning.

The relation between history of violence exposure and the development of academic and mental health problems is explored. Violence exposed children have an increased risk of developing school-related problems including: mental health problems, learning disabilities, language impairments, and other neurocognitive problems. These problems interact to create a complex web of deficits and disabilities where intervention access points are difficult to assess. Often mental health problems and academic problems develop in parallel. Timing of violence exposure and the developmental stage of the child

In a non-clinical group of 130 children (65 boys and 65 girls), we evaluated the relationships between psychological problems using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) reported by parents, the Inattention Overactivity With Aggression (IOWA) scale reported by teachers, individual factors (Intellectual quotient [IQ], temperament and heart rate) and environmental factors (stress events, mother's profession and being or not being an only child). We found no differences between the sexes in the prevalence of total psychological problems in the clinical range, but girls had significantly more border

Eating and Mealtime Behaviors in Patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Current Perspectives.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social and communication skills and repetitive and restrictive behaviors. Children and adolescents with ASD are more likely to present feeding problems than their typically developing peers are. The present narrative review of literature aims to highlight the most recent evidence about epidemiology and presentations of eating and mealtime behavioral abnormalities in ASD from infancy to adolescence. Abnormalities in breastfeeding and acceptance of complementary foods have been described by most of the stud

The effectiveness of parent-child interaction therapy for victims of interparental violence.

This study compares the effectiveness of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) in reducing behavior problems (e.g., aggression, defiance, anxiety) of 62 clinic-referred, 2- to 7-year-old, maltreated children exposed to interparental violence (IPV) with a group of similar children with no exposure to IPV (N=67). Preliminary analyses showed that IPV-exposed dyads were no more likely to terminate treatment prematurely than non IPV-exposed dyads. Results of repeated-measures MANCOVAs showed significant decreases in child behavior problems and caregivers' psychological distress from pre- to postt

The Gambling Consumption Mediation Model (GCMM): A Multiple Mediation Approach to Estimate the Association of Particular Game Types with Problem Gambling.

Bivariate associations of problem gambling with participation in particular game types often decrease when adjusting for demographics or consumption behavior (e.g., number of game types played). A summary of 14 peer-reviewed studies showed inconsistencies as well as conceptual and methodological challenges. The aim of this study was to expand previous research by a combination of (1) sophisticated feature-engineering, which disaggregates gambling intensity into facets within and beyond a game type of interest, and (2) the application of mediation models. Data comprised last year gamblers of th
