Tongue-palatal contact changes in patients with skeletal mandibular prognathism after sagittal split ramus osteotomy: an electropalatography study.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in tongue-palatal contact patterns using electropalatography (EPG) before and after sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) in patients with mandibular prognathism. Nine clients who underwent SSRO for mandibular setback and seven control subjects were participated in this study. Tongue-palatal contact patterns for /t/, /s/ and /k/ production were investigated using EPG before surgery and 3 months after surgery. The mean value of whole total of palate contact (WT) in the maximum contact frame was examined before and after SSRO. The correlat

Relationship between Spectral Characteristics of Spontaneous Postural Sway and Motion Sickness Susceptibility.

Motion sickness (MS) usually occurs for a narrow band of frequencies of the imposed oscillation. It happens that this frequency band is close to that which are spontaneously produced by postural sway during natural stance. This study examined the relationship between reported susceptibility to motion sickness and postural control. The hypothesis is that the level of MS can be inferred from the shape of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) profile of spontaneous sway, as measured by the displacement of the center of mass during stationary, upright stance. In Experiment 1, postural fluctuations whil

The Subjective Visual Vertical and the Subjective Haptic Vertical Access Different Gravity Estimates.

The subjective visual vertical (SVV) and the subjective haptic vertical (SHV) both claim to probe the underlying perception of gravity. However, when the body is roll tilted these two measures evoke different patterns of errors with SVV generally becoming biased towards the body (A-effect, named for its discoverer, Hermann Rudolph Aubert) and SHV remaining accurate or becoming biased away from the body (E-effect, short for Entgegengesetzt-effect, meaning "opposite", i.e., opposite to the A-effect). We compared the two methods in a series of five experiments and provide evidence that the two me

The role of the cerebellum in schizophrenia: an update of clinical, cognitive, and functional evidences.

The role of the cerebellum in schizophrenia has been highlighted by Andreasen's hypothesis of "cognitive dysmetria," which suggests a general dyscoordination of sensorimotor and mental processes. Studies in schizophrenic patients have brought observations supporting a cerebellar impairment: high prevalence of neurological soft signs, dyscoordination, abnormal posture and propioception, impaired eyeblink conditioning, impaired adaptation of the vestibular-ocular reflex or procedural learning tests, and lastly functional neuroimaging studies correlating poor cognitive performances with abnormal

Simulating sensory-motor incongruence in healthy volunteers: implications for a cortical model of pain.

OBJECTIVES: Conflict between motor-sensory central nervous processing has been suggested as one cause of pain in those conditions where a demonstrable or local nociceptive aetiology cannot be convincingly established (e.g. complex regional pain syndrome type 1, repetitive strain injury, phantom limb pain and focal hand dystonia). The purpose of this study was to discover whether pain could be induced in pain-free healthy volunteers when this conflict was generated transiently in a laboratory setting. METHODS: Forty-one consecutively recruited healthy adult volunteers without a history of moto

Understanding the pusher behavior of some stroke patients with spatial deficits: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether pusher behavior (ie, a tendency among stroke patients with spatial deficits to actively push away from the nonparalyzed side and to resist any attempt to hold a more upright posture) affects only the trunk, for which gravitational feedback is given by somesthetic information, or the head as well, whose gravitational information is mainly given by the vestibular system (without vision). DESIGN: Description and measurement of clinical features. SETTING: Rehabilitation center research laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Eight healthy subjects age matched to 14 patients

Brain activation related to the representations of external space and body scheme in visuomotor control.

Regional cerebral blood flow was assessed during reaching movements with either target or finger selection. Measurements were performed with positron emission tomography in normal subjects. We thus identified two patterns of cerebral activation representing parietal command functions based on either external space or body scheme information. Directing the right-hand index finger toward one target dot in an array of five was related to activations distributed over dorsal extrastriate visual cortex (putative area V3A), along the parieto-occipital sulcus (putative V6/V6A) and the posterior intrap

Exploration, anxiety, and spatial memory in transgenic anophthalmic mice.

Contradictory results are found in the literature concerning the role of vision in the perception of space or in spatial navigation, in part because of the lack of murine models of total blindness used so far. The authors evaluated the spatial abilities of anophthalmic transgenic mice. These mice did not differ qualitatively from their wild-type littermates in general locomotor activity, spontaneous alternation, object exploration, or anxiety, but their level of exploratory activity was generally lower. In the spatial version of the water maze, they displayed persistent thigmotaxic behavior an

Electromyographic activity in expert downhill skiers using functional knee braces after anterior cruciate ligament injuries.

We studied six expert downhill skiers who had sustained anterior cruciate ligament injuries and had different degrees of knee instability. The aim was to measure possible changes in electromyographic activity recorded from lower extremity muscles during downhill skiing in a slalom course without and with a custom-made brace applied to the injured knee. Surface electrodes were used with an eight-channel telemetric electromyographic system to collect recordings from the vastus medialis, biceps femoris, semimembranosus, semitendinosus, and gastrocnemius medialis muscles from both legs. Space vestibulo-neuroscience in the new century.

In the new century there will probably be more long spaceflights and fewer short spaceflights. There will probably be several flights to Mars, flights that (if chemical rockets are used) will involve one year to get there, a second year on Mars, and a third year to return. The three-year Mars scenario will probably include rotation of the spacecraft to provide artificial gravity. If nuclear thermal rockets are used, a manned exploration of Mars could be accomplished in less than one year. Vestibular research will be directed towards ensuring that astronauts, upon landing on Mars, will be able

Effect of a tone-inhibiting dynamic ankle-foot orthosis on stride characteristics of an adult with hemiparesis.

A single-subject, alternating-treatment design was used to investigate differences in stride characteristics of a hemiparetic subject under three conditions: 1) barefoot, 2) using a prefabricated plastic molded ankle-foot orthosis (AFQ), and 3) using a tone-inhibiting dynamic ankle-foot orthosis (TIAFO). Five barefoot baseline sessions were conducted. Following these baseline sessions, the three conditions were randomly varied during each of 12 alternating-treatment sessions. Data analysis revealed a significant improvement in walking velocity, step length, and stance time on the hemiparetic l

Case Report: Multi-sensory integration treatment for preschool children with intermittent exotropia and idiopathic scoliosis comorbidity.

This case report evaluates a novel multi-sensory integration training (MSIT) protocol, combining binocular disparate vision perception training with physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises in two pediatric patients (aged 4 and 5 years) with comorbid non-syndromic strabismus and idiopathic scoliosis. Both patients presented with intermittent exotropia, amblyopia, and thoracic scoliosis (Cobb angles of 10° and 13°, respectively). Following the individualized MSIT intervention, marked improvements were observed in both visual and spinal parameters: visual acuity of the amblyopic eye improv

Case Report: Positioning head tilt observed in six dogs with meningoencephalitis of unknown origin.

Positioning head tilt (PHT) is a dynamic clinical neurological sign that is characterized by a head tilt to the opposite side of a voluntary lateral turn of the head. Based on recent publications, various etiologies are proposed for the occurrence of PHT in dogs and cats. One suggested cause is a lack of inhibitory input to the vestibular nuclei due to dysfunction of the cerebellar nodulus and uvula (NU). In that category, it has been reported in dogs with hypoplasia of the NU, dogs with lysosomal storage diseases, and in a dog with a cerebellar tumor. Other proposed causes of PHT include redu

Spinal Cord Medulloepithelioma in a Cat.

A 13-month-old, neutered, male, domestic shorthair cat was referred with a history of progressive paraparesis, proprioceptive ataxia, and lumbar spinal pain. Neurological examination revealed non-ambulatory paraparesis consistent with L4-S1 myelopathy. Magnetic resonance of the thoracolumbar spinal cord identified a dorsal intradural extramedullary space-occupying lesion extending from L5 to L6. It was homogeneously hyperintense in T2-weighted imaging and isointense in T1-weighted imaging and exhibited marked and homogeneous contrast enhancement in the T1-weighted post-contrast imaging. A neglected symptom? Parietal gait lateropulsion as primary manifestation of acute is-chemic stroke.

INTRODUCTION: Gait disorders are commonly overlooked as a presenting manifestation of stroke and underrepresented in case series. We describe four cases of sudden-onset gait lateropulsion as primary manifestation of parietal lobe stroke. CASE REPORT: Four patients presented after sudden-onset gait lateropulsion. On neurological examination, all patients had at least one cortical sensory deficit and wide-based gait with lateropulsion towards the side of the cortical deficit. Neuroimaging revealed a subacute parietal lobe stroke contralateral to the side of gait lateropulsion. In two patients w

Metastatic Multifocal Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumour in the Cervicothoracic Spinal Cord of a Dog Initially Mimicking Meningomyelitis.

A nine year old cross-breed dog was presented with a two week history of ambulatory tetraparesis and proprioceptive ataxia affecting all four limbs. Meningomyelitis of Unknown Origin (MUO) was presumptively diagnosed based on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. The dog received a tapering dose of glucocorticoids and cyclosporine, showing significant improvement and the stabilization of the clinical signs for seven months. After this period, the dog showed an acute clinical deterioration and a follow-up MRI revealed new multiple lesions affectin

Assessing the Effects of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury on Vestibular Home Exercise Performance with Wearable Sensors.

After a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), dizziness and balance problems are frequently reported, affecting individuals' daily lives and functioning. Vestibular rehabilitation is a standard treatment approach for addressing these issues, but its efficacy in this population remains inconclusive. A potential reason for suboptimal outcomes is the lack of objective monitoring of exercise performance, which is crucial for therapeutic success. This study utilized wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) to quantify exercise performance in individuals with mTBI during home-based vestibular rehabi

Fear of fatness and desire for thinness as distinct experiences: A qualitative exploration.

OBJECTIVE: The pursuit of thinness and fear of gaining weight have been found to play an important role in eating disorder symptomatology. While these dimensions have typically been considered conjointly, emerging evidence suggests they may be distinct dimensions. The aim of this study was to explore the subjective experiences of fear of fatness and drive for thinness in young women with body image concerns. METHOD: Young women endorsing weight concerns (N = 29, mean age = 20.86, SD = 2.70 years) were interviewed and asked to describe an experience of fear of fat and drive for thinness, respe
