Object correspondence in audition echoes vision: Not only spatiotemporal but also feature information influences auditory apparent motion.

A crucial ability of our cognition is the perception of objects and their motions. We can perceive objects as moving by connecting them across space and time. This is possible even when the objects are not present continuously, as in the case of apparent motion displays like the Ternus display, consisting of two sets of stimuli, shifted to the left or right, separated by a variable inter-stimulus interval (ISI). This is an ambiguous display, which can be perceived as both stimuli moving uniformly to the right (group motion) or one stimulus moving across the stationary center stimulus (element

Obligatory coactive processing of color and luminance challenges strategic modulation by predictiveness.

Navigating the world requires accurate categorization of objects around us, which often involves processing multiple sources of information. The predictiveness of a source plays an important role in accurate categorization. This study aims to investigate how the predictiveness of features modulates the processing strategies of two features that are generally considered more integral than separable: color and luminance. Participants categorized a set of visual stimuli, created by varying levels of color and luminance, into two categories defined by logical rules. The stimulus-category mapping w

Changed detection: No relationship between working memory and media usage in Covid-era and contemporary young adults.

A decade ago, the widespread adoption of smartphones prompted research assessing the effects of media multitasking on cognitive performance. Early findings showed that high media multitasking imposed a significant cost to attention and executive function. Here, we revisited whether the harmful effects of media multitasking persist in digital native undergraduates, in whom nearly all media usage involves multitasking. We investigated the relationship between media usage and working memory (WM) performance. Across six experiments, we conducted online and in-person testing, using simultaneous or

Effect of hearing experience on preschool-aged children's eye gaze to a talker during spoken language processing.

Speechreading-gathering speech information from talkers' faces-supports speech perception when speech acoustics are degraded. Benefitting from speechreading, however, requires listeners to visually fixate talkers during face-to-face interactions. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that preschool-aged children allocate their eye gaze to a talker when speech acoustics are degraded. We implemented a looking-while-listening paradigm to quantify children's eye gaze to an unfamiliar female talker and two images of familiar objects presented on a screen while the children listened to

Fixation-related potentials during mobile map assisted navigation in the real world: The effect of landmark visualization style.

An often-proposed enhancement for mobile maps to aid assisted navigation is the presentation of landmark information, yet understanding of the manner in which they should be displayed is limited. In this study, we investigated whether the visualization of landmarks as 3D map symbols with either an abstract or realistic style influenced the subsequent processing of those landmarks during route navigation. We utilized a real-world mobile electroencephalography approach to this question by combining several tools developed to overcome the challenges typically encountered in real-world neuroscienc

Eye-tracking analysis of attentional disengagement in phobic and non-phobic individuals.

This study investigated threat-related attention biases using a new visual search paradigm with eye tracking, which allows for measuring attentional disengagement in isolation. This is crucial as previous studies have been unable to distinguish between engagement, disengagement, and behavioral freezing. Thirty-three participants (Mage = 28.75 years, SD = 8.98; 21 women) with self-reported specific phobia (spiders, snakes, and pointed objects) and their matched controls (Mage = 28.38 years, SD = 8.66; 21 women) took part in the experiment. The participants were instructed to initially focus on

The role of motion in visual working memory for dynamic stimuli: More lagged but more precise representations of moving objects.

While most visual working memory studies use static stimuli with unchanging features, objects in the real world are often dynamic, introducing significant differences in the surface feature information hitting the retina from the same object over time (e.g., changes in orientation, lighting, shadows). Previous research on dynamic stimuli has shown that change detection is improved if objects obey rules of physical motion, but it is unclear how memory for visual features interacts with object motion. In the current study, we investigated whether object motion facilitates greater temporal integr

Effect of visual presentation format and recall direction on letter span and error patterns in Deaf signing and hearing adults.

Deaf signers consistently show shorter memory spans than hearing nonsigners, but the scope and nature of this difference remain unclear. The present study tested whether Deaf signers are biased toward flexible use of visual aspects of linguistic items. Matched samples of adult Deaf signers (N = 33) and hearing nonsigners (N = 32) performed a letter-span task with visual serial presentation, to bias phonological processing, and a simultaneous presentation, to bias visuospatial processing. We also manipulated short-term memory by varying recall direction (forward, backward). Analyses revealed re

Attentional and lexical factors underlying word-centred neglect dyslexia errors in healthy readers.

Word-centred neglect dyslexia is most commonly conceptualised as a deficit caused by attentional biases within spatially coded internal representations of words. However, recent research has suggested that at least some cases of word-centred neglect dyslexia are unrelated to visuospatial neglect and may instead be modulated by self-inhibition and lexical factors. Here, we set out to provide novel insight into potential underlying mechanisms modulating the occurrence of word-centred lateralised reading errors in healthy participants. A sample of 47 healthy readers completed a novel attentional

The effect of training on sensitivity and stability of double fusion in Panum's limiting case.

Panum's limiting case is a phenomenon of monocular occlusion in binocular vision. This occurs when one object is occluded by the other object for one eye, but the two objects are both visible for the other eye. Although previous studies have found that vertical gradient of horizontal disparity and cue conflict are two important factors for double fusion, the effect of training on the sensitivity and stability of Panum's limiting case remains unknown. The current study trained 26 participants for 5 days with several of Panum's configurations (Gilliam, Frisby, and Wang series). The latency and d

Incidental auditory category learning and visuomotor sequence learning do not compete for cognitive resources.

The environment provides multiple regularities that might be useful in guiding behavior if one was able to learn their structure. Understanding statistical learning across simultaneous regularities is important, but poorly understood. We investigate learning across two domains: visuomotor sequence learning through the serial reaction time (SRT) task, and incidental auditory category learning via the systematic multimodal association reaction time (SMART) task. Several commonalities raise the possibility that these two learning phenomena may draw on common cognitive resources and neural network

The unnoticed zoo: Inattentional deafness to animal sounds in music.

Inattentional unawareness potentially occurs in several different sensory domains but is mainly described in visual paradigms ("inattentional blindness"; e.g., Simons & Chabris, 1999, Perception, 28, 1059-1074). Dalton and Fraenkel (2012, Cognition, 124, 367-372) were introducing "inattentional deafness" by showing that participants missed by 70% a voice repeatedly saying "I'm a Gorilla" when focusing on a primary conversation. The present study expanded this finding from the acoustic domain in a multifaceted way: First, we extended the validity perspective by using 10 acoustic samples-specifi

Self-related objects increase alertness and orient attention through top-down saliency.

Attention is influenced by information about relationships between ourselves and the objects around us. Self-related objects can either facilitate or disrupt task performance, creating a challenge for identifying the precise nature of the influence of self-relatedness on attention. To address this challenge, we measured different components of attention (alertness and orienting) in the presence of self-related objects using a revised attention network task (ANT). In a self-association task, participants first learned colour-person associations and then carried out a colour-person matching task

The influence of auditory rhythms on the speed of inferred motion.

The present research explored the influence of isochronous auditory rhythms on the timing of movement-related prediction in two experiments. In both experiments, participants observed a moving disc that was visible for a predetermined period before disappearing behind a small, medium, or large occluded area for the remainder of its movement. In Experiment 1, the disc was visible for 1 s. During this period, participants were exposed to either a fast or slow auditory rhythm, or they heard nothing. They were instructed to press a key to indicate when they believed the moving disc had reached a s

Auditory attentional filter in the absence of masking noise.

Signals containing attended frequencies are facilitated while those with unexpected frequencies are suppressed by an auditory filtering process. The neurocognitive mechanism underlying the auditory attentional filter is, however, poorly understood. The olivocochlear bundle (OCB), a brainstem neural circuit that is part of the efferent system, has been suggested to be partly responsible for the filtering via its noise-dependent antimasking effect. The current study examined the role of the OCB in attentional filtering, particularly the validity of the antimasking hypothesis, by comparing attent

The stereoscopic advantage for vection persists despite reversed disparity.

Research has shown that consistent stereoscopic information improves the vection (i.e. illusions of self-motion) induced in stationary observers. This study investigates the effects of placing stereoscopic information into direct conflict with monocular motion signals by swapping the observer's left and right eye views to reverse disparity. Experiments compared the vection induced by stereo-consistent, stereo-reversed and flat-stereo patterns of: (1) same-size optic flow, which contained monocular motion perspective information about self-motion, and (2) changing-size optic flow, which provide

Saccadic adaptation shapes perceived size: Common codes for action and perception.

Recent findings suggest that perceptual and motor systems share common codes; for instance, perceived object location is known to correlate with motor changes in the oculomotor system. Here, we investigate whether modifying saccade amplitude affects object size perception. Participants saw in peripheral vision a test disk that could vary in size across trials. This disk was then replaced by a small target cross, which was the signal to make a saccade. After the saccade, the target cross was extinguished and replaced by a reference disk (thus seen in foveal vision). Participants had to compare

Is it impossible to acquire absolute pitch in adulthood?

Absolute pitch (AP) refers to the rare ability to name the pitch of a tone without external reference. It is widely believed to be only for the selected few with rare genetic makeup and early musical training during the critical period, and therefore acquiring AP in adulthood is impossible. Previous studies have not offered a strong test of the effect of training because of issues like small sample size and insufficient training. In three experiments, adults learned to name pitches in a computerized, gamified and personalized training protocol for 12 to 40 hours, with the number of pitches gra

Vision at a glance: The role of attention in processing object-to-object categorical relations.

When viewing a scene at a glance, the visual and categorical relations between objects in the scene are extracted rapidly. In the present study, the involvement of spatial attention in the processing of such relations was investigated. Participants performed a category detection task (e.g., "is there an animal") on briefly flashed object pairs. In one condition, visual attention spanned both stimuli, and in another, attention was focused on a single object while its counterpart object served as a task-irrelevant distractor. The results showed that when participants attended to both objects, a

Axis of rotation as a basic feature in visual search.

Searching for a "Q" among "O"s is easier than the opposite search (Treisman & Gormican in Psychological Review, 95, 15-48, 1988). In many cases, such "search asymmetries" occur because it is easier to search when a target is defined by the presence of a feature (i.e., the line terminator defining the tail of the "Q"), rather than by its absence. Treisman proposed that features that produce a search asymmetry are "basic" features in visual search (Treisman & Gormican in Psychological Review, 95, 15-48, 1988; Treisman & Souther in Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 114, 285-310, 1985).
