Leptospirosis--current risk factors connected with human activity and the environment.

Leptospirosis is a widespread although recently neglected zoonosis recognized worldwide. The disease seems to be underestimated, especially in countries located in the temperate climatic zone. The presented article concerns the main characteristics of leptospirosis and describes formerly known and recently observed environmental, occupational and recreational risk factors significant in the spreading and pathogenesis of the disease. The aspects of epidemiology significant in the temperate climatic zone are emphasized. The majority of cited articles present cases of the disease reported from Eu

Effect of deer density on tick infestation of rodents and the hazard of tick-borne encephalitis. II: population and infection models.

Tick-borne encephalitis is an emerging vector-borne zoonotic disease reported in several European and Asiatic countries with complex transmission routes that involve various vertebrate host species other than a tick vector. Understanding and quantifying the contribution of the different hosts involved in the TBE virus cycle is crucial in estimating the threshold conditions for virus emergence and spread. Some hosts, such as rodents, act both as feeding hosts for ticks and reservoirs of the infection. Other species, such as deer, provide important sources of blood for feeding ticks but they do

Usutu virus in Africa.

Usutu virus (USUV) was discovered in South Africa in 1959. Since then, it has been reported in several African countries including Senegal, Central African Republic, Nigeria, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, and Morocco. In 2001, USUV has been identified for the first time outside of Africa, namely in Europe, where it caused a significant mortality among blackbirds in Vienna, Austria. In 2009, the first two human cases of USUV infection in Europe have been reported in Italy, causing encephalitis in immunocompromised patients. The host range in Africa includes mainly Culex mosquitoes, birds

Isolation and characterization of Orientia tsutsugamushi from rodents captured following a scrub typhus outbreak at a military training base, Bothong district, Chonburi province, central Thailand.

Orientia tsutsugamushi, an obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacterium, is the causative agent of scrub typhus, a vector-borne disease transmitted by infected chiggers (trombiculid mite larvae). In 2002, an outbreak of scrub typhus occurred among Royal Thai Army troops during the annual field training at a military base in Bothong district, Chonburi province, central Thailand. This report describes the outbreak investigation including its transmission cycle. Results showed that 33.9% of 174 trained troops had scrub typhus-like signs and symptoms and 9.8% of those were positive for O. tsutsu

Borrelia hispanica in Ornithodoros erraticus, Portugal.

Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is a spirochetal infection caused by the genus Borrelia. The disease is distributed in the Old and New World with many different species reported. In Europe, TBRF is caused by B. hispanica transmitted to man by Ornithodoros erraticus, a soft tick usually found in old premises to shelter pig herds. In Portugal, the first human case of TBRF was reported in 1942 but since the beginning of the 1960s, the disease has rarely been described and seems to either have disappeared or have been undiagnosed. Therefore, in 2009 a survey was undertaken to evaluate the presen

Spatial epidemiology of suspected clinical leptospirosis in Sri Lanka.

Leptospirosis is one of the most widespread zoonoses in the world. A large outbreak of suspected human leptospirosis began in Sri Lanka during 2008. This study investigated spatial variables associated with suspected leptospirosis risk during endemic and outbreak periods. Data were obtained for monthly numbers of reported cases of suspected clinical leptospirosis for 2005-2009 for all of Sri Lanka. Space-time scan statistics were combined with regression modelling to test associations during endemic and outbreak periods. The cross-correlation function was used to test association between rainf

The neurobiology of pair bonding: insights from a socially monogamous rodent.

The formation of enduring relationships between adult mates (i.e., pair bonds) is an integral aspect of human social behavior and has been implicated in both physical and psychological health. However, due to the inherent complexity of these bonds and the relative rarity with which they are formed in other mammalian species, we know surprisingly little about their underlying neurobiology. Over the past few decades, the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) has emerged as an animal model of pair bonding. Research in this socially monogamous rodent has provided valuable insight into the neurobiolo

Second case of histoplasmosis in a captive mara (Dolichotis patagonum): pathological findings.

A second case of histoplasmosis in a captive mara (Dolichotis patagonum) from a colony at the wildlife park Africam Safari, Puebla, Mexico, is described, and the mara died with disseminated clinical form of the disease, affecting mostly the large intestine and adrenal. The pathological findings of this case 2 revealed severe granulomatous typhlocolitis and moderate granulomatous gastrohepatic lymphadenitis with numerous yeast-like cells, 2-4 mum in diameter, with a clear halo surrounding them inside the cytoplasm of macrophages, suggesting the parasitic form of Histoplasma capsulatum. Draft genome sequences of Yersinia pestis isolates from natural foci of endemic plague in China.

To gain insights into the evolutionary origin, emergence, and pathogenicity of the etiologic agent of plague, we have sequenced the genomes of four Yersinia pestis strains isolated from the zoonotic rodent reservoir in foci of endemic plague in China. These resources enable in-depth studies of Y. pestis sequence variations and detailed whole-genome comparisons of very closely related genomes from the supposed site of the origin and the emergence of global pandemics of plague.

An application of duplex PCR for detection of Leptospira spp. and Orientia tsutsugamushi from wild rodents.

Duplex PCR is useful for detecting two different agents from the same specimen. Kidney specimens are the most suitable for detection of Leptospira spp. For Orientia tsutsugamushi, blood clots, spleen, and liver specimens are considered the most suitable. For this study, kidney tissues were the only specimens obtainable for the PCR. Blood clots, spleen, and liver specimens were not available. However, by using the PCR for scrub typhus, O. tsutsugamushi was detected in the kidney of one rodent. This result shows that kidney specimens can be used to detect O. tsutsugamushi using PCR. Further stud

Enriched environments, experience-dependent plasticity and disorders of the nervous system.

Behavioural, cellular and molecular studies have revealed significant effects of enriched environments on rodents and other species, and provided new insights into mechanisms of experience-dependent plasticity, including adult neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity. The demonstration that the onset and progression of Huntington's disease in transgenic mice is delayed by environmental enrichment has emphasized the importance of understanding both genetic and environmental factors in nervous system disorders, including those with Mendelian inheritance patterns. A range of rodent models of other br

Yersinia pestis as a telluric, human ectoparasite-borne organism.

The classic epidemiological model of plague is an infection of rodents that is transmitted to human beings by rodent ectoparasites. This model fits with observations of sporadic and limited outbreaks, but hardly explains the persistence of plague foci for millennia or the epidemiological features drawn from the descriptions of historical pandemics. A comprehensive review of the published data, including scientific papers published in France between 1920 and 1940, allows the completion of the epidemiological chain by introducing soil as a reservoir, burrowing rodents as a first link, and human

Porcine and rodent infection with Trichinella, in the Sierra Grande area of Rio Negro province, Argentina.

In 2000, two cases of human trichinellosis were detected in the Sierra Grande area of Rio Negro province, Argentina. As part of an investigation of the aetiology of these cases, 300 pigs slaughtered for consumption in the area between 2000 and 2002 were checked for Trichinella infection, by artificial digestion of a muscle sample. Twelve (5.6%) - four (7.3%) of the 55 checked in 2000, five (4.8%) of the 105 investigated in 2001, and three (2.1%) of the 140 investigated in 2002 - were found infected. Blood samples were collected from other pigs aged > 6 months old, so that sera could be tested,

Receptor-mediated hepatocarcinogenesis: role of hepatocyte proliferation and apoptosis.

The rodent liver is a target organ for the action of several non-genotoxic carcinogens. These include dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls, phenobarbital, peroxisome proliferators and organochlorine pesticides. These chemicals disrupt the homeostasis of the liver by perturbing hepatocyte cell death and proliferation, causing hyperplasia leading to tumour formation. Significant progress has been made towards elucidating the mechanisms of action of these toxicants since the discovery of receptors that bind specific classes of xenobiotics. Dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls bind to the aryl hydr

Evaluation of a system for the perfusion of isolated, rodent organs.

Perfusion of isolated organs is a common experimental approach. However, the surfaces of the perfusion system might alter the components of the blood and thereby negatively affect organ function. The aim of this study was to minimize the influence of the perfusion system on the blood components and to evaluate the system. Pressure and flow in the perfusion system consisting of a roller-pump, reservoir, oxygenator, hemo-filter and bubble-trap with a total tubing length of 4.5 m are controlled by a computer software (DASYLAB, Datalog, Moenchengladbach, Germany) via a transducer connected to the

Effect of restricted food intake on production, catabolism, and effects of IGF-I and cyclic nucleotides in cultured ovarian tissue of domestic nutria (Myocastor coypus).

The aims of these in vitro experiments were to examine the effects of short-term food restriction on ovarian secretory activity and the role of IGF-I and cAMP- and cGMP-dependent intracellular mechanisms in the control of ovarian function in domestic nutria. Slices of ovary from sexually mature animals kept under conditions of normal and restricted ((1/2) of standard ration) feeding were cultured with or without IGF-I (50 ng/ml), cAMP analogues (dbcAMP and Rp-cAMPS), and cGMP analogues (8-pCPT-cGMP and Rp-8-Br-PET-cGMPS; all at 100 nM). In nonovarian cells dbcAMP activates and Rp-cAMPS inhibit

Rodents and Leptospira transmission risk in Terceira island (Azores).

The role of rodents as Leptospira renal carriers in Terceira island was evaluated (1993-1995) through kidney culture and serology [microscopic aglutination test (MAT)] of 94 mice and rats. Fifty-nine animals were positive (n = 41 by serology + culturing; n = 11 serology; n = 7 culturing), presenting a wide distribution in man-made and natural areas. House mice had the highest bacteriological (82.9%) and serological (90.9%) rates, being strictly related to serovar arborea. Black rats were involved in the dispersion of all isolated L. interrogans sensu lato serovars (arborea, copenhageni and ict

[Serologic studies of domestic cats for potential human pathogenic virus infections from wild rodents].

For several viral infections a reservoir in wild rodents has been demonstrated. Some of the agents are known or suspected to be pathogenic for humans. Because improvements in hygiene have reduced direct human contact with rodents, domestic cats could be acting as active transmitters of these viruses from rodents to man. We selected 4 such pathogens--ortho- and parapox-, hanta- and encephalomyocarditis viruses--which, in different ways, may lead to serious human illness: Ortho- and parapoxvirus infections may cause localized pox lesions following direct skin contact. In general, the lesions hea
