BACKGROUND: The histopathologic diagnosis of infectious colitis remains relevant despite recent advances in microbiologic techniques.
OBJEC … ole in patient care. Infectious colitis can have a variety of clinical manifestations, ranging from strongyloidiasis, which can cause a smoldering, subclinical infection for decades, to syphilis, which can clinically mimic cancer or inflammatory bowel disease. Therefore, the histopathologic identification of infection as the cause of a patient's colitis has a cons …

Human strongyloidiasis is caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, S. fuelleborni fuelleborni and Strongyloides f. kellyi. Strongyloides fuelleborni is a soil-transmitted nematode parasite typically infecting non-human primates. The southern pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) is distributed throughout the southern part of Thailand and could be a source of zoonotic transmission of this nematode. Here, we extracted DNA from Strongyloides speciescultured from the feces of southern pig-tailed macaques and their owners. Using PCR and sequencing of the extracted DNA, we compared the nucleotide seque…

Socio-economic factors relating to prevalence of intestinal helminthic infections were studied in 189 Thai adults residing in and around Ban … 11/47) of infected individuals had multiple infections. Gut nematode worms are important parasites of people and other animals. The parasitic nematode Strongyloides stercoralis infects an estimated 600 million people worldwide and is one of the soil-transmitted helminthiases, a WHO-defined neglected tropical disease. It has long been suggested that human S. stercoralis infection may be a zoonosis from dogs. We investigated this by whole genome sequence analysis of S. stercoralis from sympatric human and dog populations in Asia. We find that human- and dog-derived S. stercoralis have genetically distinct nuclear genomes, but we also find evidence of

Latent infections caused by Strongyloides sp. may become symptomatic years after initial exposure in endemic areas especially in specific contexts such as following administration of corticosteroids (for COVID-19 or other diseases). Heightened awareness of these reactivations and timely diagnosis may be critical to prevent complications and improve outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic infection classified by the World Health Organization as a neglected tropical disease. Although predominantly asymptomatic, it can become a life-threatening disease in an immunocompromised host. Epidemiologic studies in the Western Hemisphere are scarce, but even more scarce are descriptions of the natural course of this disease. Our objectives were to identify the different manifestations and outcomes of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in the Hispanic veteran population in Puerto Rico. We also discuss the importance of pursuing a timely diagnosis…

A 58-year-old Japanese woman came to our institution because of leg edema and abdominal distention. She had developed acute pancreatitis 5 times in the past 3 years. Dilation of the bile duct and main pancreatic duct without obstruction was observed on computed tomography and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography. The presence of Strongyloides stercoralis was highly suspected from the biopsy sample from the duodenal papilla. Polymerase chain reaction amplification and sequencing of small subunit rDNA from paraffin-embedded specimens identified the worm as S. stercoralis. All of the sympt

In this report, we present the case of a patient who developed the strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome 3 weeks after an uneventful resection of a sphenoid wing meningioma. She originally presented with symptoms of raised intracranial pressure and was given dexamethasone before surgery. The pathology, diagnosis and management of Strongyloides stercoralis are reviewed.

Over 70 countries in tropical and subtropical zones are endemic areas for Strongyloides stercoralis, with a higher prevalence of the parasite often occurring in tropical regions compared to subtropical ones. In order to explore genetic variations of S. stercoralis form different climate zones, 18S ribosomal DNA of parasite specimens obtained from Thailand were sequenced and compared with those from Japan. The maximum likelihood indicates that S. stercoralis populations from these two different climate zones have genetically diverged. The genetic relationship between S. stercoralis populations

Strongyloides stercoralis has a unique ability to replicate in the human host and lead to chronic infection that can persist for several decades. Thirty-three patients (10 travellers and 23 immigrants) with imported S. stercoralis infection were studied and clinical and epidemiological characteristics described. Only 16 patients (48.5%) reported symptoms, mainly of the gastrointestinal tract. Eosinophilia was present in 21 (63.6%) patients. Seven patients (21.2%) had an immunocompromising condition. Patients were classified into chronic asymptomatic infection (17/33, 51.5%), chronic symptomati

Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasite that can be acquired not only in tropical and subtropical areas, but also in some European countries. This helminthiasis is often a- or paucisymptomatic, and may persist in a latent state for several decades. In case of immunosuppression, a reactivation of the disease can occur, that may result in severe -- sometimes fatal -- complications, due to a syndrome of hyperinfestation. We present two cases of reactivation in patients suffering from lymphoma under chemotherapy. Screening of this parasite should be proposed for patients that have stayed in an end

The anal-rectal cytology is introduced recently to evaluate human-papillomavirus related cellular changes in the cells of anal canal. It is especially useful in high risk patients such as HIV patients. Very few reports were published regarding cytomorphological findings in anal cytology. Strongyloides stercoralis is an enteric helminthic parasite with particular significance in immunocompromised patients. The infection is asymptomatic or manifests as mild gastrointestinal symptoms in normal hosts. The infection can be devastating in immunocompromised persons, and carries a high mortality rate.
