From prediction to control: Age-related dissociations between implicit regularity encoding and attentional modulation during perception-action integration.

Adolescence is a key period for the maturation of cognitive control, yet it remains unclear how developing brains transform learned regularities into flexible, goal-directed behavior. This study examined whether (pre-)adolescents can exploit the predictability of task-irrelevant information to improve perception-action integration. Using a distractor-response binding paradigm with varying predictability and EEG recording, we compared behavioral and neural indices between (pre-)adolescents (N = 35) and adults (N = 33). Behaviorally, adults-but not (pre-)adolescents-benefited from high predictab

Modeling the hallucinatory effects of classical psychedelics in terms of replay-dependent plasticity mechanisms.

Classical psychedelics induce complex visual hallucinations in humans, generating percepts that are coherent at a low level, but which have surreal, dream-like qualities at a high level. While there are many hypotheses as to how classical psychedelics could induce these effects, there are no concrete mechanistic models that capture the variety of observed effects in humans, while remaining consistent with the known pharmacological effects of classical psychedelics on neural circuits. In this work, we propose the 'oneirogen hypothesis,' which posits that the perceptual effects of classical psyc

Medical Vision-Language Models: Existing Technologies, Clinical Applications and Future Directions.

Medical image analysis is a cornerstone of modern healthcare, yet conventional single-modal deep learning often struggles with the unique physical constraints and structural variability inherent in data acquired from diverse medical sensors. Recently, Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have sparked a paradigm shift by bridging the semantic gap between visual sensor signals and clinical narratives. Following the PRISMA guidelines, 167 representative studies are systematically synthesized in this review to provide a comprehensive roadmap of VLM technological evolution and clinical utility. Sex-specific effects of fatiguing exercise on skeletal muscle passive mechanics are preserved in aging.

Skeletal muscle function is central to the preservation of functional mobility. Given global shifts to an increasingly aged population, it is paramount that researchers and clinicians better understand the effectors of age-related functional decline. Muscle fatiguability acutely modifies skeletal muscle mechanics in ways that may affect joint stability. We have previously reported sex-specific reductions in cellular passive stress and modulus with fatigue in young males, but not females. Here, we assess whether older adults, who are more susceptible to fatigue during dynamic contractions, exhi

Neural Endophenotypes of Semantic Processing and Social Functioning in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is highly heritable; however, the neural architecture underlying semantic processing and social functioning, and the extent to which it reflects familial liability, remains insufficiently understood. Unaffected siblings (SIB), who share substantial genetic liability with individuals with ASD, offer a critical framework for identifying intermediate neural phenotypes. We examined 36 individuals with ASD, 36 SIB, and 37 typically developing (TD) controls, matched for age, IQ, and handedness. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during a semantic judgment tas

Multimodal AI in precision medicine: linking omics, imaging and clinical decisions.

Precision medicine is shifting from a single-biomarker paradigm toward multimodal integration of molecular, imaging, and clinical data, with artificial intelligence (AI) serving as a key enabling technology. Multimodal imaging, computational pathology, spatial omics and liquid biopsy have all become more adept at capturing disease and biological variation, and foundation models, especially vision-language models, are now creating a common language between histology, molecular and biomedical text. AI-powered pipelines are also improving data quality upstream, which ultimately means that multimo

Mu and Beta Oscillatory Changes During a Motor Task Following Rehabilitation in Chronic MCA Stroke: Insights from EEG.

BackgroundStroke in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) often leads to persistent upper limb disability. While clinical scales such as the Fugl-Meyer Assessment for the Upper Extremity (FM-UE) track motor recovery, high-density EEG provides insight into cortical motor-activation patterns. Event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS) in mu and beta bands may offer insight into recovery mechanisms.Objectivea) To characterize changes in mu and beta oscillations following upper limb rehabilitation in chronic MCA stroke patients, and b) To identify ERD features most closely associated wit

Machine learning-assisted mRNA vaccine pharmacovigilance: a systematic review of multi-source real-world data.

BACKGROUND: The rapid deployment of mRNA vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic exposed limitations in traditional pharmacovigilance systems, including delayed reporting, high underreporting rates, and inability to calculate true incidence. Machine learning (ML) offers new pathways to overcome these challenges by integrating multi-source real-world data. METHODS: We systematically reviewed English-language studies from database inception to June 2026. Searches were performed in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. Two reviewers independently screened records. Given substantial heterogeneity acr

Clinical-Grade Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Neural Precursor Cells Restore Motor Function and Preserve Striatal Integrity in a Quinolinic Acid-Lesioned Rat Model of Huntington's Disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disease characterised by progressive degeneration of GABAergic medium spiny neurons (MSNs) in the striatum. Neural precursor cells (NPCs) derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have been considered as a promising and scalable source for neuronal replacement and circuit restoration. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effects of a clinical-grade, human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-homozygous iPSC line (YZWJ-s513) differentiated into NPCs (s513-NPCs) in a quinolinic acid (QA)-lesioned rat model of HD. The contribution of verbal delayed recall to phonemic but not semantic fluency in aging individuals.

OBJECTIVE: The cognitive abilities contributing to verbal fluency performance in aging individuals remain discussed. Besides executive functioning and processing speed, memory retrieval is necessary for successful verbal fluency performance. The latter has often been overlooked, although it may use similar retrieval mechanisms with verbal fluency performance. We aimed to investigate cognitive abilities contributing to phonemic and semantic fluency during the time course of the tasks. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-two healthy aging individuals were assessed with measures of verbal fluency, p

Enhanced games and performance-optimized athletes: anticipating the orthopedic challenges, a narrative review.

The Enhanced Games (EG) represents a controversial shift in competitive athletics by removing anti-doping regulations and allowing the sanctioned use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) in pursuit of maximum performance. This unprecedented model may fundamentally alter sports culture, competition standards, and the medical landscape in which athletes train and compete. Of particular concern are the potential consequences for orthopedic and musculoskeletal health, as PED use, particularly anabolic agents and growth factors, can both enhance and compromise musculoskeletal function. Potential b

The Specific Forces Applied During Robotic Training That Optimize Recovery of Locomotion in a Rat Model of Spinal Cord Injury.

Background. Conventional physical therapy following neurological injury is an arduous task met with minimal returns and quickly plateauing recovery. Unconventional therapies, such as robotic assisted gait training (RAGT) have not produced the robust clinical gains that we all had hoped. Rodent RAGT is a nascent field, but it works on the same principles as the clinical counterpart. Objective. We have previously investigated the ability of RAGT to enhance the recovery of rats following a cervical spinal cord injury and found that training in a resistive field is detrimental, and training in a n

Signal-to-Noise Ratio Effects Frontoparietal Network Lateralization: Electroencephalogram Evidence in Underwater Auditory Target Recognition.

Accurately recognizing auditory targets within background interference remains challenging at a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Using an oddball paradigm, this electroencephalogram study investigated the impact of SNR (0, -10, and -20 dB) on psychophysiological processes underlying underwater auditory target recognition in twenty normal-hearing participants. Reduced SNR impaired the N1-P2 component and led to P300 variations, with delayed latencies (N1: p = 0.0355; P300: p = 0.0075) and reduced amplitudes (P2: p = 0.0075; P300: p = 0.0277), indicating increased attentional demands. Health logics in and beyond the laboratory: Medicine, public health, and pandemic governance in Denmark.

The COVID-19 pandemic spread rapidly across the globe after its emergence in 2020. Various strategies were used to prevent the spread of infection, including lockdowns, testing, and social distancing. However, accepting or rejecting certain measures had implications for individuals, populations, or both, and the pandemic foregrounded the relation between medicine and public health, including their different objectives, ethical principles, and risk perceptions. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in two COVID-19 testing laboratories in Denmark, this study reveals the co-existence of two distinct

RAG-Enhanced Open SLMs for Hypertension Management Chatbots.

Chronic disease management requires continuous monitoring, lifestyle modification and therapy adherence, thus requiring constant support from healthcare professionals. Chatbots have proven to be a promising approach for engaging patients in managing their health condition at home and for offering continuous assistance by being readily available to answer questions. While large language models offer an impressive solution for chatbot implementation, third-party systems raise privacy concerns, and computational requirements limit small-scale deployment. We address these challenges by developing

Building a Quantitative Telemedicine Platform for Myasthenia Gravis: Augmenting the Physical Examination.

Myasthenia gravis (MG), a fluctuating autoimmune neuromuscular disease, presents unique challenges for remote assessment due to its reliance on detailed physical examination. To address this, we developed a quantitative telemedicine platform that augments traditional neurological assessments using computer vision, signal processing, and augmented intelligence. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic that motivated a shift to telemedicine evaluations, the Myasthenia Gravis Core Exam (MGCE) was developed by the rare disease consortium MGNet, to provide guidance in the performance of telemedicine cl

A Deep Learning Framework for End-to-End Control of Powered Prostheses.

Deep learning offers a potentially powerful alternative to hand-tuned control of active lower-limb prostheses, being capable of generating continuous joint-level assistance end-to-end. This eliminates the need for conventional task classification, state machines and mid-level control equations by collapsing the entire control problem into a deep neural network. In this letter, sensor data and conventional commanded torque from an open-source powered knee-ankle prosthesis (OSL) were collected across five locomotion modes: level ground, ramp incline/decline and stair ascent/descent.
