Application of machine learning in a rodent malaria model for rapid, accurate, and consistent parasite counts.

Rodent malaria models serve as important preclinical antimalarial and vaccine testing tools. Evaluating treatment outcomes in these models often requires manually counting parasite-infected red blood cells (iRBCs), a time-consuming process, which can be inconsistent between individuals and labs. We have developed an easy-to-use machine learning (ML)-based software, Malaria Screener R, to expedite and standardize such studies by automating the counting of Plasmodium iRBCs in rodents. This software can process Giemsa-stained blood smear images captured by any camera-equipped microscope. It featu

Enhancing Brain-Computer Interface Performance by Incorporating Brain-to-Brain Coupling.

Human cooperation relies on key features of social interaction in order to reach desirable outcomes. Similarly, human-robot interaction may benefit from integration with human-human interaction factors. In this paper, we aim to investigate brain-to-brain coupling during motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) training using eye-contact and hand-touch interaction. Twelve pairs of friends (experimental group) and 10 pairs of strangers (control group) were recruited for MI-based BCI tests concurrent with electroencephalography (EEG) hyperscanning. Event-related desynchronization (

The use of computed tomographic three-dimensional reconstructions to develop instructional models for equine pelvic ultrasonography.

Ultrasonography has gained increased utility to diagnose pelvic fractures in horses; however, internal pelvic contours can be difficult to appreciate from external palpable landmarks. We developed three-dimensional (3D) simulations of the pelvic ultrasonographic examination to assist with translation of pelvic contours into two-dimensional (2D) images. Contiguous 1mm transverse computed tomography (CT) images were acquired through an equine femur and hemipelvis using a single slice helical scanner. 3D surface models were created using a DICOM reader and imported into a 3D modeling and animatio

Measuring femoral lesions despite CT metal artefacts: a cadaveric study.

OBJECTIVE: Computed tomography is the modality of choice for measuring osteolysis but suffers from metal-induced artefacts obscuring periprosthetic tissues. Previous papers on metal artefact reduction (MAR) show qualitative improvements, but their algorithms have not found acceptance for clinical applications. We investigated to what extent metal artefacts interfere with the segmentation of lesions adjacent to a metal femoral implant and whether metal artefact reduction improves the manual segmentation of such lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We manually created 27 periprosthetic lesions in 10

Complex facial deformity reconstruction with a surgical guide incorporating a built-in occlusal stent as the positioning reference.

Computer-aided design has gained increasing popularity in clinical practice, and the advent of rapid prototyping technology has further enhanced the quality and predictability of surgical outcomes. It provides target guides for complex bony reconstruction during surgery. Therefore, surgeons can efficiently and precisely target fracture restorations. Based on three-dimensional models generated from a computed tomographic scan, precise preoperative planning simulation on a computer is possible. Combining the interdisciplinary knowledge of surgeons and engineers, this study proposes a novel surgi

Advances and innovations in computer-assisted head and neck oncologic surgery.

Over the past years, computer-assisted surgery has gained more importance in craniomaxillofacial surgery, especially in primary and secondary treatment of head and neck malignancies. The basis for oncologic treatment of the head and neck region requires detailed planning using computed tomography, cone-beam computed tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging in combination with computer-assisted, infrared-based navigation system. These techniques allow a preplanned image-guided path to the tumor region for taking biopsies, resection, or reconstruction. The aim of this work was to show the advan

Development and validation of an automated evaluation system for lattice radiotherapy using a commercial treatment planning system scripting API.

PURPOSE: Clinical implementation of lattice radiotherapy (LRT) remains constrained by the absence of standardized, automated tools for comprehensive post-plan dosimetric analysis within commercial treatment planning systems (TPS). Herein, an automated script-based tool was developed using the Eclipse Scripting API (ESAPI) to enable rapid, standardized calculation of key LRT-specific metrics, including peak-to-valley dose ratio (PVDR), equivalent uniform dose (EUD), and ablative dose ratio (ADR). METHODS: A modular computational architecture comprising four functional layers was implemented: (

Automatic quantification of epicardial adipose tissue volume.

PURPOSE: Epicardial fat is the adipose tissue between the serosal pericardial wall layer and the visceral layer. It is distributed mainly around the atrioventricular groove, atrial septum, ventricular septum and coronary arteries. Studies have shown that the density, thickness, volume and other characteristics of epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) are independently correlated with a variety of cardiovascular diseases. Given this association, the accurate determination of EAT volume is an essential aim of future research. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to establish a framework for fully

In silico study and validation of phosphotransacetylase (PTA) as a putative drug target for Staphylococcus aureus by homology-based modelling and virtual screening.

Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive bacterium, can cause a range of illnesses from minor skin infections to life-threatening diseases, such as bacteraemia, endocarditis, meningitis, osteomyelitis, pneumonia, toxic shock syndrome and sepsis. Due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance strains, there is a need to develop of new class of antibiotics or drug for this pathogen. The phosphotransacetylase enzyme plays an important role in the acetate metabolism and found to be essential for the survival of the S. aureus. This enzyme was evaluated as a putative drug target for S. aureus by in sil

A clinical trial evaluating feasibility and acceptability of a brain-computer interface for telerehabilitation in patients with stroke.

BACKGROUND: We have created a groundbreaking telerehabilitation system known as Tele BCI-FES. This innovative system merges brain-computer interface (BCI) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) technologies to rehabilitate upper limb function following a stroke. Our system pioneers the concept of allowing patients to undergo BCI therapy from the comfort of their homes, while ensuring supervised therapy and real-time adjustment capabilities. In this paper, we introduce our single-arm clinical trial, which evaluates the feasibility and acceptance of this proposed system as a telerehabilitat

Membrane Kymograph Generator: A cross-platform GUI software for automated generation and analysis of kymographs along dynamic cell boundaries.

SUMMARY: The plasma membrane and accompanying cortex serve as one of the major hubs of the signal transduction and cytoskeletal activities that collectively regulate numerous cell physiological processes such as migration, polarity, macropinocytosis, phagocytosis, cytokinesis, etc. Yet, dynamically tracking membrane-cortex associated protein or lipid kinetics over time from live-cell image series remains a challenging task, primarily due to the difficulty of accurately extracting and aligning the cell boundary between consecutive frames, as the cell continuously deforms and moves. Here, we pre

Learning medical and dental sciences through interactive multi-media.

Health professionals in various fields of Medicine and Dentistry must acquire comprehensive technological knowledge in order to practice their professions. A large portion of that knowledge cannot be found in a textbook. Examples of this type of information are data gleaned from viewing microscopic slides and dissecting cadavers. In order to fully comprehend an area of study in medicine, the student relies on various resources (often physically unrelated, like the x-ray department and the dissection room). This situation makes the teaching and learning processes much more difficult to accompli

Attacking the mosquito on multiple fronts: Insights from the Vector Control Optimization Model (VCOM) for malaria elimination.

BACKGROUND: Despite great achievements by insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) in reducing malaria transmission, it is unlikely these tools will be sufficient to eliminate malaria transmission on their own in many settings today. Fortunately, field experiments indicate that there are many promising vector control interventions that can be used to complement ITNs and/or IRS by targeting a wide range of biological and environmental mosquito resources. The majority of these experiments were performed to test a single vector control intervention in isolation; however,

Treatment with individual orbital wall implants in humans - 1-Year ophthalmologic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: In 2009 a method of creating individual, patient specific orbital wall implants using rapid prototyping (RP) was shown in a preliminary human study. That study showed that it is financially viable to produce anatomical models and that this technology could be used in the repair of orbital floor fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 24 consecutive subjects who had sustained orbital fractures (14 males, 6 females) without any coexisting central nervous system or globe injury were assessed post-operatively. The first series of 12 patients, recruited during the period 2005-

RMBase v2.0: deciphering the map of RNA modifications from epitranscriptome sequencing data.

More than 100 distinct chemical modifications to RNA have been characterized so far. However, the prevalence, mechanisms and functions of various RNA modifications remain largely unknown. To provide transcriptome-wide landscapes of RNA modifications, we developed the RMBase v2.0 (http://rna.sysu.edu.cn/rmbase/), which is a comprehensive database that integrates epitranscriptome sequencing data for the exploration of post-transcriptional modifications of RNAs and their relationships with miRNA binding events, disease-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and RNA-binding proteins (RBPs)

Cortical reorganization induced by virtual reality therapy in a child with hemiparetic cerebral palsy.

Virtual reality (VR) therapy is a new, neurorehabilitation intervention aimed at enhancing motor performance in children with hemiparetic cerebral palsy (CP). This case report investigated the effects of VR therapy on cortical reorganization and associated motor function in an 8-year-old male with hemiparetic CP. Cortical activation and associated motor development were measured before and after VR therapy using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and standardized motor tests. Before VR therapy, the bilateral primary sensorimotor cortices (SMCs) and ipsilateral supplementary motor are
