A nonverbal phoneme deletion task administered in a dynamic assessment format.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the project was to design a nonverbal dynamic assessment of phoneme deletion that may prove useful with individuals who demonstrate complex communication needs (CCN) and are unable to communicate using natural speech or who present with moderate-severe speech impairments. METHOD: A nonverbal dynamic assessment of phoneme deletion with a systematic prompting and scoring system was developed and compared to the same measure administered using a traditional "static" format. Both versions were administered to 64 typically developing children ranging in age from 6 to 8;5. T

Do as I do imitation in a steller sea lion Eumetopias jubatus.

The present study explored whether a well-socialized Steller sea lion named Hama could reproduce similar actions with human demonstrations using the "Do as I do" (DAID) paradigm. Hama had learned 50 types of behaviors, but her social learning ability was unknown. In Study 1, we trained Hama to produce simultaneous DAID responses. After introducing the DAID training, we conducted four tests to confirm Hama's acquisition of demonstrator-matching behavior. We found that Hama successfully acquired the action-matching ability for human actions, not only with three trained actions but also with six

Should we prioritize knowledge gain or process improvement when teaching diagnostic reasoning? Insights from how medical students engage with deliberate reflection.

INTRODUCTION: The complexity of diagnostic reasoning ensures there can be no singular educational intervention to perfect its teaching. The need to flexibly adapt to needs of trainees and learning environments demands deeper understanding of available strategies. Deliberate reflection offers one technique that is central to debate in this area, but the literature remains insufficiently clear about why it can be effective and, hence, what purposes it can serve. By better understanding how deliberate reflection works we can better design learning exercises that guide students toward clinical exp

Serum NFL and neuropsychological performance over ∼8 years in women with and without HIV: a longitudinal repeated measures study.

BACKGROUND: Blood-based biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and stroke, including serum neurofilament light chain (sNFL), are understudied in women living with and without HIV. METHODS: We assessed cross-sectional and longitudinal change in sNFL between 2008 and 2019 associated with neuropsychological performance (NP) among women living with HIV (WLWH) and without HIV (WLWOH) age ≥40 years in the Women's Interagency HIV Study. Baseline and repeated ∼8-year fasting sNFL levels were measured using Simoa. Sociodemographically-adjusted NP T-scores (attention, working memory, executive function

Clinical, Cognitive and Neurodevelopmental Profile in Tetrasomies and Pentasomies: A Systematic Review.

Background: Sex chromosome aneuploidies (SCAs) are a group of disorders characterised by an abnormal number of sex chromosomes. Collective prevalence rate of SCAs is estimated to be around 1 in 400-500 live births; sex chromosome trisomies (e.g., XXX, XXY, XYY) are most frequent, while tetra- and pentasomies (e.g., XXXX, XXXXX, XXXY, XXXXY) are rarer, and the most common is 48, XXYY syndrome. The presence of additional X and/or Y chromosomes is believed to cause neurodevelopmental differences, with increased risk for developmental delays, language-based learning disabilities, cognitive impairm

Exploring staff experiences: A case for redesigning the response to aggression and violence in the emergency department.

INTRODUCTION: A Code Black is the coordinated response by healthcare staff and security to an act or threat of verbal and physical aggression or violence perpetrated by a patient, family member or visitor towards healthcare staff within a hospital setting. Behavioural disturbance is often verbally de-escalated by staff. However, as a last resort physical and/or chemical restraint may be necessary. Reports show that there is an increasing number of violent incidents in Emergency Departments (ED), emphasising the importance of staff training for Code Black events. This research examines the resp

Developing a cognitive model of advanced teacher professional vision for understanding processes of noticing and reasoning.

Teacher professional vision (PV) describes teachers' situation-specific ability to notice and reason about pedagogically relevant classroom events - encompassing both instructional learning processes and classroom management interactions. PV comprises two core processes: noticing (the selective perception of relevant classroom cues) and reasoning/interpretation (the knowledge-based process of making sense of what has been noticed). Previous research has consistently shown that novice and expert teachers differ systematically in their PV skills and that these skills can be fostered through targ

An intelligent fusion-based transfer learning model with artificial protozoa optimiser for enhancing gesture recognition to aid visually impaired people.

Generally, the interaction of gestures presents a set of benefits to persons with disabilities, from improving motor, social, and cognitive skills to delivering a secure and controlled atmosphere for engaging in real-world scenarios. Automatic detection methods, such as hand gesture recognition (GR), are among the most active research fields. Hand gestures, particularly in the form of sign language (SL), are one of the effective modes of non-verbal interaction and a stimulating area of research because they can simplify communication and serve as a standard method of communication, employed in

Deviant functional connectivity patterns in the EEG related to developmental dyslexia and their potential use for screening.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a common learning disorder with potential neural origins. While EEG-based brain activation measures combined with machine learning have shown promise for DD screening, these approaches often lack validation on independent participants, a crucial step for practical application. This study developed an EEG-based screening approach and investigated the neural correlates of DD in Chinese children. EEG was recorded from 130 children (82 DD, 48 typically developing; 7-11 years) during resting state (eyes-open, eyes-closed) and verbal working-memory tasks. After artifac
