Just 1-min exposure to a pure tone at 100 Hz with daily exposable sound pressure levels may improve motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is a common transportation issue worldwide. Vestibular dysfunction has been reported to be a key etiology of motion sickness. However, there are limited technologies for alleviating motion sickness. METHODS: The most appropriate frequency (Hz) and level (dBZ) of pure tone for modulation of vestibular function were determined by an ex vivo study using murine utricle explants. The preventive effects of the selected pure tone on motion sickness were then confirmed by using a beam balance test in mice. The alleviating effects of pure tone on motion sickness induced by

Intralabyrinthine schwannomas : Surgical management and hearing rehabilitation with cochlear implants.

Intralabyrinthine schwannomas (ILS) are a rare differential diagnosis of sudden hearing loss and vertigo. In an own case series of 12 patients, 6 tumors showed an intracochlear, 3 an intravestibular, 1 a transmodiolar including the cerebellopontine angle (CPA), 1a transotic including the CPA, and 1 a multilocular location. The tumors were removed surgically in 9 patients, whereas 3 patients decided for a "wait-and-test-and-scan" strategy. Of the surgical patients, 3 underwent labyrinthectomy and cochlear implant (CI) surgery in a single-stage procedure; 1 patient had extended cochleostomy with

Longitudinal comparison of adaptive neuroplasticity in two rat models of unilateral vestibulopathy by dual-tracer [18F]FDG and [18F]UCB-H PET.

Animal models of acute unilateral vestibulopathy are well established for the study of adaptive lesion-induced neuroplasticity, because symptoms of acute vestibular asymmetry such as nystagmus and postural imbalance recover over time as central vestibular compensation mechanisms commence action. The purpose of this study was to compare these mechanisms in a postganglionic complete unilateral vestibular neurectomy model (UVN) vs. a preganglionic incomplete chemical unilateral labyrinthectomy model (cUL) using a longitudinal [18F]FDG/[18F]UCB-H dual tracer positron emission tomography (PET) appr

[Unilateral deafness (author's transl)].

Unilateral conductive deafness has a readily determined aetiology in most cases. In contrast, unilateral sensorineural hearing loss requires more refined and extensive investigation. The most frequent causes of unilateral sensorineural hearing loss in our patients were sudden deafness, Menière's disease, cranio-vertebral dysplasia and cerebellopontine angle tumors. Early diagnosis of acoustic neuroma or other lesions of the internal auditory meatus or cerebellopontine angle requires special attention. The definitive diagnosis of these tumors often demands intensive clinical investigation but a

Motorist's Disorientation Syndrome-A Narrative Review.

Motorist's disorientation syndrome (MDS) is seen in 1 to 5% of patients in a tertiary neurotology clinic and remains an underdiagnosed pathology. It was first described in 1985 by Page & Gresty, using the term "visual vertigo". Patients described sensations of veering or turning over while driving an automobile when visual input was restricted. This was exacerbated at high speeds, on winding roads, going down hills, or when overtaken by a vehicle. All patients in this initial study had peripheral or central neurotological abnormalities and showed exaggerated responses during optokinetic stimul

Primary or secondary chronic functional dizziness: does it make a difference? A DizzyReg study in 356 patients.

In 2017, the term "persistent postural-perceptual dizziness" (PPPD) was coined by the Bárány Society, which provided explicit criteria for diagnosis of functional vertigo and dizziness disorders. PPPD can originate secondarily after an organic disorder (s-PPPD) or primarily on its own, in the absence of somatic triggers (p-PPPD). The aim of this database-driven study in 356 patients from a tertiary vertigo center was to describe typical demographic and clinical features in p-PPPD and s-PPPD patients. Patients underwent detailed vestibular testing with neurological and neuro-orthoptic examinati

Subjective visual vertical with the bucket method in Brazilian healthy individuals.

INTRODUCTION: The capacity of a healthy individual to estimate the true vertical in relation to the Earth when a fluorescent line is aligned in a completely dark room is called the subjective visual vertical. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate subjective visual vertical using the bucket method in healthy Brazilian individuals. METHODS: Binocular subjective visual vertical was measured in 100 healthy volunteers, 50 females and 50 males. The volunteers indicated the estimated position in which a fluorescent line inside a bucket reached the vertical position. A total of ten repetitions were performed, five

Audiometric characteristics of a dutch family with a new mutation in GATA3 causing HDR syndrome.

We present the case of a Dutch family with a new mutation (c523_528dup) in GATA3 causing HDR syndrome. HDR syndrome is characterised by hypoparathyroidism, deafness and renal defects. In this study, we describe the audiometric characteristics of 5 patients from this family. Their hearing impairment was congenital, bilateral and symmetric. Audiograms showed mild-to-moderate hearing impairment with a flat audiogram configuration. Higher frequencies tended to be affected more strongly. Cross-sectional analyses showed no progression, and a mean audiogram was established. Psychophysical measurement

The first attack of Ménière's disease: a study through SVV perception, clinical and pathogenetic implications.

This is a study of Subjective Visual Vertical (SVV) perception during acute attacks of Ménière's disease (MD) with comparative evaluation of concurrent nystagmus. We studied 21 patients with unilateral MD during the acute phase and 7 days later. Of the nine patients with an initial attack of MD, seven had an alteration of SVV perception and of these, three indicated a match with canal functional signs, while four patients showed an opposite trend of SVV perception relative to the spontaneous nystagmus. Nine of the 12 patients with definite MD had a pathological SVV perception always in corresp

Enhanced vestibulo-ocular reflex to electrical vestibular stimulation in Meniere's disease.

Meniere's disease is characterized by sporadic episodes of vertigo, nystagmus, fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus and aural pressure. Since Meniere's disease can affect different regions of the vestibular labyrinth, we investigated if electrical vestibular stimulation (EVS) which excites the entire vestibular labyrinth may be useful to reveal patchy endorgan pathology. We recorded three-dimensional electrically evoked vestibulo-ocular reflex (eVOR) to transient EVS using bilateral, bipolar 100-ms current steps at intensities of 0.9, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 mA with dual-search coil
