A novel mouse model of acute vestibular dysfunction via semicircular canal injection of absolute ethanol.

OBJECTIVE: Various vestibular pathology models have been developed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of vestibular diseases; however, there is a notable absence of minimally invasive mouse model of vestibular dysfunction. In this study, we established a novel model and conducted a comprehensive evaluation of vestibular function alongside various behavioral assessments. METHODS: We developed a surgical procedure involving canalostomy followed by injection of absolute ethanol into the semicircular canal of mice. Histological analysis and auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing were condu

Bilateral superior semicircular canal dehiscence: bilateral conductive hearing loss with subtle vestibular symptoms.

Superior semicircular canal dehiscence is caused by a bone defect on the roof of the superior semicircular canal. The estimated prevalence when unilateral varies between 0.4% and 0.7% and is still unknown when bilateral. Patients may present with audiologic and vestibular symptoms that may vary from asymptomatic to disabling. We report a case of a 72-year-old Caucasian woman presented to otolaryngology department reporting imbalance, bilateral pulsatile tinnitus, hypoacusis while being very sensitive to certain sounds. Physical examination was unremarkable, except for the Rinne test that was n

Rescue of peripheral vestibular function in Usher syndrome mice using a splice-switching antisense oligonucleotide.

Usher syndrome type 1C (USH1C/harmonin) is associated with profound retinal, auditory and vestibular dysfunction. We have previously reported on an antisense oligonucleotide (ASO-29) that dramatically improves auditory function and balance behavior in mice homozygous for the harmonin mutation Ush1c c.216G > A following a single systemic administration. The findings were suggestive of improved vestibular function; however, no direct vestibular assessment was made. Here, we measured vestibular sensory evoked potentials (VsEPs) to directly assess vestibular function in Usher mice. We report that

Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation enhances spatial memory in cognitive impairment-induced by intracerebroventricular-streptozotocin administration.

There are several anatomical connections between vestibular system and brain areas construct spatial memory. Since subliminal noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) has been demonstrated to enhance some types of memory, we speculated that application of noisy GVS may improve spatial memory in a rat model of intracerebroventricular streptozotocin (ICV-STZ)-induced cognitive impairment. Moreover, we attempted to determine the effect of repeated exposure to GVS on spatial memory performance. The spatial memory was assessed using Morris water maze test. The groups received 1 (ICV-STZ/GVS-I) o

Integration of vestibular and gastrointestinal inputs by cerebellar fastigial nucleus neurons: multisensory influences on motion sickness.

Previous studies demonstrated that ingestion of the emetic compound copper sulfate (CuSO4) alters the responses to vestibular stimulation of a large fraction of neurons in brainstem regions that mediate nausea and vomiting, thereby affecting motion sickness susceptibility. Other studies suggested that the processing of vestibular inputs by cerebellar neurons plays a critical role in generating motion sickness and that neurons in the cerebellar fastigial nucleus receive visceral inputs. These findings raised the hypothesis that stimulation of gastrointestinal receptors by a nauseogenic compound

[Interocular asymmetry of nystagmus and motion sickness].

Binocular video nystagmography was employed to study the human vestibulo-ocular reaction to the double rotation test used in medical flight certification to assess vestibulo-vegetative stability. Purpose of the investigation was to establish an interrelation between parameters of the nystagmus reaction to rotation and severity of motion sickness (MS). The total of 135 medically certified flying men aged 23 to 47 years were subject to testing by intermittent Coriolis accelerations accumulation according to Bryanov's procedure. The vestibulo-vegetative reaction was assessed by the criteria of ve

A new neurogenic vestibular evoked potential (N6) recorded with the use of air-conducted sound.

INTRODUCTION: Neurogenic vestibular evoked potentials that are recorded from the scalp have so far been recorded in the form of N3 (click air-conducted), N5 (tone air-conducted), and P10 (bone-conducted stimulus) waveforms. The purpose of this study is to find other vestibular waveforms obtained with air-conducted sound. METHODS: The experiments were organized into 4 parts: 1) topographic scalp mapping; 2) determining the consistency in appearance of candidate vestibular waveforms; 3) further characteristics such as their relationship to vestibular evoked myogenic potentials, sensitivity to 5

Treatment of apogeotropic benign positional vertigo: comparison of therapeutic head-shaking and modified Semont maneuver.

Several methods of physiotherapy have been advanced for apogeotropic type benign positional vertigo involving the horizontal semicircular canal (HC-BPV). The aim of this study was to determine the therapeutic efficacies of the proposed maneuvers in apogeotropic HC-BPV. Using a prospective randomized trial involving seven nationwide dizziness clinics in Korea, we compared the immediate efficacies of head-shaking and modified Semont maneuvers in 103 consecutive patients with apogeotropic HC-BPV. We also determined an additional therapeutic benefit of mastoid oscillation while the patients withou

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in Behcet's disease.

The aim of this study was to investigate vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) and their clinical significance in Behcet's disease. Twenty-six patients with Behcet's disease and 25 healthy volunteers were evaluated for pure tone audiometry, caloric response, and VEMPs. Sensorineural hearing loss was found in 53.8% of patients with Behcet's disease, which was significantly higher than controls. Four patients had canal paresis, but no controls; this difference was not significant. Although VEMP recordings were elicited in all study subjects, mean p13 and n23 latencies were prolonged in B

Vestibular adaptation to centrifugation does not transfer across planes of head rotation.

Out-of-plane head movements performed during fast rotation produce non-compensatory nystagmus, sensations of illusory motion, and often motion sickness. Adaptation to this cross-coupled Coriolis stimulus has previously been demonstrated for head turns made in the yaw (transverse) plane of motion, during supine head-on-axis rotation. An open question, however, is if adaptation to head movements in one plane of motion transfers to head movements performed in a new, unpracticed plane of motion. Evidence of transfer would imply the brain builds up a generalized model of the vestibular sensory-moto

Vestibular integration in human cerebral cortex contributes to spatial remapping.

The process of visuo-spatial updating is crucial in guiding human behaviour. While the parietal cortex has long been considered a principal candidate for performing spatial transformations, the exact underlying mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we investigated in a patient with a right occipito-parietal lesion the ability to update the visual space during vestibularly guided saccades. To quantify the possible deficits in visual and vestibular memory processes, we studied the subject's performance in two separate memory tasks, visual (VIS) and vestibular (VES). In the VIS task, a sac

Auditory neuropathy/auditory dys-synchrony detected by universal newborn hearing screening.

The implementation of neonatal hearing screening has enabled early detection and intervention in hearing loss. The use of otoacoustic emissions (OAE) and auditory brainstem response testing in universal screening has led to the recognition of this recently described disorder called auditory neuropathy/auditory dys-synchrony (AN/AD). This diagnosis indicates that the infant has significant hearing loss despite having normal outer hair cells in the cochlea. We reviewed the characteristics and natural history of nine infants detected to have AN/AD from universal newborn hearing screening in a nat
