Sequential titration of infective virus and complement-fixing antigen in brain and liver of suckling mice infected with the following virus strains-Dugbe (a new arbovirus), Congo (related to Crimean hemorrhagic fever virus), yellow fever, dengue 1 and dengue 2-showed a progressive increase in titer after infection. High titers of both infective virus and complement-fixing antigen were demonstrated long before the mice showed clinical signs of infection. It is suggested that earlier isolation and identification of arboviruses from clinical and field specimens can be made if serological tests ar

Fifty-three patients accepted on clinical grounds as cases of Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) in Australia in 1974 were examined for antibody to MVE virus. Only one (who died early in the disease and whose diagnosis was confirmed by virus isolation) did not develop antibody; 13 patients showed stationary or single convalescent titres not diagnostic of recent infection, but other evidence that infection was recent was obtained in eight; 39 showed significant rise or fall in titre confirming recent infection. Haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) was more effective in establishing a diagnosis than

The Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein (CSP) forms the basis of leading subunit malaria vaccine candidates. However, the mechanisms and specific targets of immunity are poorly defined. Recent findings suggest that antibody-mediated complement-fixation and activation play an important role in immunity. Here, we investigated the regions of CSP targeted by functional complement-fixing antibodies and the antibody properties associated with this activity. We quantified IgG, IgM, and functional complement-fixing antibody responses to different regions of CSP among Kenyan adults naturally

A seroepidemiological study of Brucella infections in multiple livestock species in the Borana pastoral system of Ethiopia was performed between December 2007 and October 2008. A cross-sectional multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select 575 cattle, 1073 camels and 1248 goats from the target populations. Sera were collected from the animals, and serially tested using Rose Bengal test and complement fixation test. Overall prevalence and prevalence with respect to explanatory variables were established, and potential risk factors for seropositivity were analysed using a multivariable

Sera from five patients with clinically and immunopathologically proven herpes gestationis were studied by complement fixing immunofluorescence and complement fixing immuno-electron microscopy using specimens of skin, amniochorion and placenta. The results demonstrated that the complement fixation antibody (herpes gestationis factor) could bind to the basement membrane zone of skin, amnion and chorion laeve but not to that of the placental syncytiotrophoblast. These data suggest that the herpes gestationis factor may be induced by the basement membrane zone antigens of extra-villous cytotropho
