Detecting gastrointestinal (GI) infection transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM) in England is complicated by a lack of routine … ars and living in London, Brighton and Manchester. An adult male excess was observed every year for Entamoeba histolytica (range 59.8-76.1% male), Giardia (53.1-57.6%) and Campylobacter (52.1-53.5%) and for a minority of years for hepatitis A (max. 69.8%) and typhoidal salmonella (max. 65.7%). Neuroinvasions caused by parasites.

Parasitic diseases of the central nervous system are associated with high mortality and morbidity. Many human parasites, such as Toxoplasma gondii, Entamoeba histolytica, Trypanosoma cruzi, Taenia solium, Echinococcus spp., Toxocara canis, T. cati, Angiostrongylus cantonensis, Trichinella spp., during invasion might involve the CNS. Some parasitic infections of the brain are lethal if left untreated (e.g., cerebral malaria – Plasmodium falciparum, primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) – Naegleria fowleri, baylisascariosis – Baylisascaris procyonis, African sleeping sickness – African trypa…

Predicting frequency distribution and influence of sociodemographic and behavioral risk factors of Schistosoma mansoni infection and analysis of co-infection with intestinal parasites.

Geospatial analysis was used to study the epidemiology of Schistosoma mansoni, intestinal parasites and co-infections in an area (Ilha das Flores) in Sergipe, Brazil. We collected individually georeferenced sociodemographic, behavioral and parasitological data from 500 subjects, analyzed them by conventional statistics, and produced risk maps by Kernel estimation. The prevalence rates found were: S. mansoni (24.0%), Trichuris trichiura (54.8%), Ascaris lumbricoides (49.2%), Hookworm (17.6%) and Entamoeba histolytica (7.0%). Only 59/500 (11.8%) individuals did not present any of these infection…

PCR amplification and DNA sequence analysis of parasitic intestinal protozoa in specimens stained with Chlorazol Black E.

Chlorazol Black E (CBE) stain has been used for the detection and identification of intestinal parasitic protozoa. In recent years, genotyping of protozoa has been performed to examine pathogenicity and for epidemiologic analysis. In this study, protozoan DNA was amplified from preserved human fecal specimens stained with CBE that were positive for Giardia intestinalis (syn. G. lamblia and G. duodenalis), Chilomastix mesnili, Pentatrichomonas hominis, and Entamoeba histolytica. DNA was amplified from 11 of the 12 (91.6%) samples examined. DNA from CBE-stained smears of G. intestinalis, E. hist…

Common intestinal parasites.

Intestinal parasites cause significant morbidity and mortality. Diseases caused by Enterobius vermicularis, Giardia lamblia, Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, and Entamoeba histolytica occur in the United States. E. vermicularis, or pinworm, causes irritation and sleep disturbances. Diagnosis can be made using the "cellophane tape test." Treatment includes mebendazole and household sanitation. Giardia causes nausea, vomiting, malabsorption, diarrhea, and weight loss. Stool ova and parasite studies are diagnostic. Treatment includes metronidazole. Sewage treatment, proper handwashing, …

How many stool examinations are necessary to detect pathogenic intestinal protozoa?

Recent reports have suggested that examination of one stool specimen is sufficient to detect protozoa in symptomatic patients. To verify this hypothesis, we examined specimens submitted to the regional laboratory of a large, prepaid health plan that provides primary care to a membership representative of the general population in northern California. We examined the number and results of stool specimen examinations in the two-month period before detection of Entamoeba histolytica in 125 infected persons, of Giardia lamblia in 154 infected persons, and of Dientamoeba fragilis in 60 persons infe…
