BACKGROUND: Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis) is a leading cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in both community and healthcare settings, especially in catheterized patients. Proteus species express various types of fimbriae that can serve as colonization-related virulence factors. The severity of infection escalates when these virulent strains acquire antibiotic resistance. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility, and genetic determinants of fluoroquinolone resistance in P. mirabilis isolates. Further, to screen for the presence of virulence g

UNLABELLED: Our knowledge of the nitrogen cycle has been advanced by the discovery of anammox bacteria, ammonia-oxidizing archaea, and comammox bacteria, along with their high diversity. Direct ammonia oxidation (dirammox), a recently discovered heterotrophic nitrification pathway, converts ammonium and organic nitrogen directly to N2 through the DnfABC multienzyme system, further expanding our understanding of the nitrogen cycle. However, the taxonomic distribution, prevalence, and nitrogen metabolic potential of microorganisms encoding dirammox genes remain poorly understood. Here, large-sca

Background. The gram-negative Neisseria is associated with two of the most potent human epidemic diseases: meningococcal meningitis and gonorrhoea. In both cases, disease is caused by bacteria colonizing human mucosal membrane surfaces. Overall, the genus shows great diversity and genetic variation mainly due to its ability to acquire and incorporate genetic material from a diverse range of sources through horizontal gene transfer. Although a number of databases exist for the Neisseria genomes, they are mostly focused on the pathogenic species. In this present study we present the freely avail

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance in environmental bacteria threatens therapeutic efficacy in clinical settings. Shewanella algae, historically regarded as a marine saprophyte, is increasingly recognized as an emerging opportunistic pathogen. In this study, we analyzed 86 S. algae isolates from Spain (19 clinical and 67 environmental) and integrated them with 178 publicly available genomes to explore antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and genomic diversity. Penicillins and fosfomycin consistently showed poor activity, whereas piperacillin/tazobactam, third- and fourth-generation cep

The objective of this investigation is to ascertain the distinctive profile of the rhizospheric soil resistome within the Mecca region, while also evaluating the potential risks associated with the horizontal transfer of resistome determinants to the open environment and human clinical isolates. We have made metagenomic whole-genome shotgun sequencing for rhizospheric microbiomes of two endemic plants, namely Moringa oleifera and Abutilon fruticosum. The rhizospheric resistomes of the two plants and the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were identified by cross-referencing encode

Colistin (COL) is a cationic cyclic peptide that disrupts negatively-charged bacterial cell membranes and frequently serves as an antibiotic of last resort to combat multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections. Emergence of the horizontally transferable plasmid-borne mobilized colistin resistance (mcr) determinant and its spread to Gram-negative strains harboring extended-spectrum β-lactamase and carbapenemase resistance genes threatens futility of our chemotherapeutic arsenal. COL is widely regarded to have zero activity against mcr+ patients based on standard antimicrobial suscept

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs), mainly of the CTX-M family, have been associated with Escherichia coli strains of animal origin in Europe. An in vivo experiment was performed to study the effects of veterinary beta-lactam drugs on the selection and persistence of ESBL-producing E. coli in the intestinal flora of pigs. Twenty pigs were randomly allocated into three treatment groups and one control group. All pigs were inoculated intragastrically with 10(10) CFU of a nalidixic acid (NAL)-resistant mutant derived from a CTX-M-1-producing E. coli strain of pig origin. Treatment with amo

Tango is a transposon of the Tc1 family and was originally discovered in the African malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae. Here we report a systematic analysis of the genome sequence of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, which uncovered three distinct Tango transposons. We name the only An. gambiae Tango transposon AgTango1 and the three Ae. aegypti Tango elements AeTango1-3. Like AgTango1, AeTango1 and AeTango2 elements both have members that retain characteristics of autonomous elements such as intact open reading frames and terminal inverted repeats (TIRs). AeTango3 is a degenerate tr

The genetic diversity of group A streptococci (GAS) throughout much of the world has not been adequately explored. To assess genetic variation among GAS in western Nepal, 120 noninvasive GAS, collected from eight different villages, were genetically characterized using emm typing, sof sequencing, and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). A high level of genetic diversity was observed among these isolates, with 51 genotypes based upon 51 multilocus sequence types (STs), 45 emm sequence types, and 28 sof sequence types. On the basis of shared ST-emm and sof-emm associations, 40 of the 51 genotypes

This long-term study of genetic diversity and epidemiology of the alpha-proteobacterium Bartonella in wild rodents from forest (Myodes glareolus and Apodemus flavicollis) and abandoned farmland (Microtus arvalis and Mi. oeconomus) was carried out in the years 2007-2009 in the Mazury Lakes District. In total, 1193 rodents were marked and recaptured, and 2226 blood samples were collected. The highest Bartonella prevalence was found in A. flavicollis (43.5%), the lowest in Mi. oeconomus (9.4%), while prevalence in My. glareolus and Mi. arvalis was, respectively, 13.2% and 11.8% (PCR of citrate sy

Dental caries results from ecological dysbiosis of oral biofilms driven by frequent sugar exposure, yet the role of viruses, particularly bacteriophages, in this process remains underexplored. This review synthesizes current evidence on how the oral virome contributes to caries pathogenesis and examines emerging phage-based therapeutic strategies. The oral cavity harbors diverse viral communities, including eukaryotic viruses (herpesviruses, papillomaviruses) and prokaryotic viruses (bacteriophages). While herpesviruses like EBV, CMV, and HSV-1 do not directly demineralize teeth, they may act

Fluoroquinolones (FQs) remain important treatments for many Gram-negative and some Gram-positive infections, but rapid resistance development is steadily reducing their clinical usefulness. This review integrates biological and epidemiologic evidence through a One Health perspective focused on the ESKAPE group: Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp. At the molecular level, resistance often begins with changes in quinolone-resistance determining regions of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, followe

BACKGROUND: Borrelia bavariensis is one of the agents of Lyme Borreliosis (or Lyme disease) in Eurasia. The genome of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato species complex, that includes B. bavariensis, is known to be very complex and fragmented making the assembly of whole genomes with next-generation sequencing data a challenge.
RESULTS: We present a genome reconstruction for 33 B. bavariensis isolates from Eurasia based on long-read (Pacific Bioscience, for three isolates) and short-read (Illumina) data. We show that the combination of both sequencing techniques allows proper genome reconstr

BACKGROUND: Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is the causative agent of animal erysipelas and, to a fewer occurrences, human erysipeloid. It is ubiquitous in nature and commensal in diverse species of animals, wild or domestic, from mammals and birds to reptiles and fish. Mechanisms of its virulence and pathogenicity are poorly understood.
RESULTS: Making use of the complete genome sequencing of E. rhusiopathiae strain SY1027 and comparative genome analysis between the three highly pathogenic strains (SY1027, Fujisawa and ATCC19414), the genomic structure and putative functional elements, such as

The present study investigated the water quality index, microbial composition and antimicrobial resistance genes in urban water habitats. Combined chemicals testing, metagenomic analyses and qualitative PCR (qPCR) were conducted on 20 locations, including rivers from hospital surrounds (n = 7), community surrounds (n = 7), and natural wetlands (n = 6). Results showed that the indexes of total nitrogen, phosphorus, and ammonia nitrogen of hospital waters were 2-3 folds high than that of water from wetlands. Bioinformatics analysis revealed a total of 1,594 bacterial species from 479 genera from

Enterococcus faecium has become a globally disseminated nosocomial pathogen mainly because of acquisition and diffusion of virulence factors and multidrug resistance determinants, including glycopeptides, which are some of the last resort antimicrobials used to treat more serious infections common in high-risk patients. In this study we investigated and characterized hospital-associated (HA) E. faecium isolates collected at Hue Central Hospital, Vietnam. Our results highlighted the spread among hospital wards of a surprisingly heterogeneous multidrug-resistant E. faecium population comprising
